All Judges Retained

  • Cook County voters Tuesday narrowly retained four Circuit Court judges who had been deemed unqualified to continue on the bench by several legal groups.

Jim Ryan and Susan McDunn each garnered about 63 percent of the vote, just above the required 60 percent to be retained; Dorothy Jones pulled in 64 percent; and William O'Neal recorded 66 percent.

"The bar groups who spend many hours interviewing and vetting these judges are disappointed," said Jeannine Cordero, chair of the Chicago Bar Association judicial evaluation committee.

Public identified as "unqualified," yet they remain in their spots. This is exactly why we and many others we converse with run down the list and vote "No" for every single judge. Any change is good in terms of the corrupt City of Chicago, County of Cook and State of Illinois.

what percentage of all voters who voted bothered to vote to retain any judges?

i'll bet that the total votes cast to retain, plus the total votes cast to not retain, is no more than 10% of the total votes cast for the governor's race.

How can people constantly hear about how judges let violent offenders go with a slap on the wrist and still vote yes to retaining them? My guess is that people just don't know so vote yes for fear of screwing things up. Things are already screwed up and have been for a long time. Enjoy being victims citizens!

Those Irish last names swept them in. And not blaming you, SCC, but where was a list published declaring what judges in this last election weren't qualified?

I'd have to say Dorothy Jones is about the worst judge I have ever had the displeasure of meeting up in a courtroom when she was assigned at Kedzie & Flournoy. How that dingbat ever managed to obtain a law degree from DePaul U and pass the bar is anyone's guess. I wouldn't allow that stupid woman bag my groceries at Jewel!

WE have got to become more proactive as Police Officers when these elections come out. It's kind of sad that with all the drivel we see posted here, nothing was said about what judges we should have been pulling for, or against. That's just gotta change.

When Ryan gets 63% of the vote what makes you think the efficiency of the machine and the ignorance of voters are mutually exclusive.

Pathetic, just pathetic. What a total embarassment that that guy got retained. Brazen about not working a full day, the gall to complain about Fox News doing that story about him, and then there is his courtroom attitude....

=I didn't hear a thing during all of these political ads about the judges. Maybe before the next election we can start a thread for opinions to at least be enlightened by people's experiences with these judges. No publicity on judges, but that's the way to do it, keep the citizens in the dark so they have no idea who to retain and who to give the boot to.

So, who takes the lead in informing voters? I tracked down a list on the CBA website, but until someone actually creates a list and has people at the polls handing out the list, what do you expect. Most of the people voting haven't a clue about the judges. If you want to get rid of these guys, don't whine about voters - its a waste of air. Do something about it - get the FOP to create a "do not retain" list, and get some people out to hand to voters.

Every year, every voter must go to the Chicago Bar ASsociation website. Print it out and take it to the voting booth with you.

Right there, right at the top of the page is a list of their recommendations for non-retention.

CBA needs to do a better job of publicizing their non-retention recommendations.

Far too many people voted based on their party affiliation, ethnic or racial background and not for who would do the best job. Sounds very much like the promotion system of the police department. The citizens will get what they voted for,: corruption, wasteful spending, patronage, nepotism and cronyism and higher taxes.

most people don't bother to vote on judicial retentions at all, and this election's full page of retentions just increased that most to practically all.

compare the total number of votes cast, in cook county, for the governor's contest, to the total number of votes cast to retain/not retain.

then talk about most people giving a rat's ass about making 'the best possible decision when voting'.

Unfortunately Judge Epstein got his judgeship originally only because his wife died. He was married to Skokie Court Chief Judge Joan Corboy. She was killed at her father's condo in Florida (dad is big time PI attorney Phil Corboy) and then defense attorney Epstein was appointed to finish her judge position.

With Corboy family clout Epstein got a full judgeship and now is at the Appellate level.

At Skokie they called him No time Epstein.

11/04/2010 12:07:00 AM
-----------------------------------

If you say so, Mrs. Ryan.

He had to be relieved of regular court duties because of some of the bullshit he pulled. I think he's in some courtroom now where he only has to deal with his own kind, i.e., lawyers.

Here is some of the bullshit he put people through when he sat on the bench in the 3rd district in Rolling Meadows prior to being relieve of his duties there by the chief judge.

Bear in mind, this was published in the Trib in 2002, and he hasn't gotten any better over the years.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

"Most voters knew about one Jim Ryan on their ballot. In Cook County there were three--one running for governor, one vying in the south suburbs to become a circuit judge, and one attempting to stay on the bench.

The first two lost. The third, Circuit Judge James T. Ryan, won, even though he was strongly opposed by virtually every bar group and newspaper editorial page, including this one.

Ryan proved that it has become nearly impossible to remove a bad judge through a retention election, no matter how unqualified or offensive he may be. Ryan needed 60 percent of the vote to retain his $136,000-a-year job. He got 62 percent. If only a few more people had voted against him, he would be engaged in a more appropriate activity now: shopping his resume around.

Ryan once forced a woman to urinate on herself, by refusing to allow her to leave his courtroom. He told two little girls they would "go to hell" if they didn't tell the truth in testimony about their dead poodle. He found a woman guilty for speeding and fined her, even though she was in labor and racing to the hospital when she got the ticket. In these and other cases, he was downright abusive to the people in his court.

But he won the right to stay for another six years. So did every other judge running for retention in Cook County, even though several of them have records of imcompetence and unjudicious behavior."

It's Cook County - 'not all that bad' IS a shining endoresement, unfortunately.

Don't judges require a certain percentage of "Yes" votes to in order to stay in office?

I was under the impression that not voting for them can be almost as harmful as voting "No" to retain.

I voted to retain based on the FOP recommendation and voted "No" on the others, except for Judge Ford, who I know to be pro-police.

Most of the cook county judges get
elected simply because people don't know them, and just mark anything down in the votors box, There is no way in hell that that piece of SHIT, Dorothy Jones should have even got out of high school let alone get a law degree, someone has to visit the weataidw court rooms and listen to her, she has no clue and berates the police. Her husband used to drive a bust out pick up truck and she came to the 11th district for work riding with this Sanford and son looking guy who was her husband, and she hates the police bec ause they locked him up awhile back.

-----------------------------------

Out of the number of votes actually cast, yea or nay for retention, they require only 60% affirmative votes to retain their seat on the bench.

That's like getting a D in school, to borrow an analogy.

I think they need to up the ante to at least 70%, but that will never happen.
