- To all of the officers that assisted me on I 55 and Damen on Sunday 31 OCT 10….
I want to extend my sincerest gratitude regarding that night. All officers went above and beyond to assist me when I got shot. To clarify, I was working with a PPO but he was not the one who shot me. Our job requires us to make a split second decisions and sometime, it’s unfortunate but things like this happen.
Considering the high stress situation, everyone did everything perfect. I had one officer using his belt to make a [tourniquet] (to that officer, I still have your belt-let me know where to drop it off), another officer took the shirt off his back to prevent me from bleeding out, officers held my hands, a Sergeant elevated my leg, everyone assisted until the ambulance arrived... It did take a little bit of time for them to show up, but I know they have a tough job too.
Thank you to all officers that assisted me- from the ones on the scene, to the ones working the 012th district who blocked off traffic to get me to the hospital quicker. Thanks to ones who picked up my wife and all the officers and bosses who came to visit me as well. It was very nice to have so much support for me and my family. I was able to come home today at 1330 hours. I am hoping to make a full recovery. I have some nerve damage which will hopefully not be permanent. Stay safe and back each other up!

Office it was an accident and please do not listen to the ass holes who want to tear you or your partner apart over this. I for one am glad your injury is not bad. I think everyones ego will take more time to heal, but thats ok. We as police officers should not rip each other up and we do and it has only gotten worse. I remember when I got on if you fuckec up you were corrected and thats it today cops will call you at home to remind you how fucked up you are. We need to stop this self destructive way.

THAT MAY NOT BE SUCH A GREAT REWARD (LOL). Brian should get a shot at any Unit he wants, a take home car, or how about become our next Superintendent? Anyone who lays in a hospital bed a short time after being shot pleading with J-Fled to not jam any Coppers over this incident deserves the BEST position in this Department!!! Get well soon Brian! Geesh...make a guy Sgt for getting shot? You want to see why that is a real bad idea go to 019 3rd watch and have a chat with 1910...biggest idiot around! Im glad the guy is ok, and he seems stand up but you cannot hand out supervisory positions based on personality!

I just attended a kick-ass Emergency Self-aid course hosted by the Bridgeview Police Department last weekend covering emergency medical issues addressing this very situation.

Brian Bardsley from CPD has been presenting this course at L E agencies in the area and he brings real world, simple first aid applications to the table that can and will save your life until help arrives.

That situation could have happened to any one of us. You never know when you might get hurt like that.

Nerve repair takes a lot of time, so don't give up. (And, unfortunately, pain means you're actually healing.) Take all the time you need to recover and don't rush back before you're ready.

Not necessarily. It allows you to exert a whole lot of pressure on an artery to stop massive bleeding. The idea being that you choke off the blood, but you don't tighten it so much that it stops completely, and depending on how you apply it, you can loosen it at intervals to let some past.
When applied as hard as possible, then locked out - yes, it could kill your limb. But done properly it buys you some time til the EMTs get there. I'm surprised you didn't know this. Keep your knowledge of first aid current; it could save your life, or the life of another someday!

To 9:13 poster...no, the application of a tourniquet does not in and of itself cause a loss of the limb. It becomes a question of how long it is applied. In battlefield situations, where a casualty evacuation may be delayed the tourniquet is monitored and sometimes briefly loosened.

I would have no problem with a guy shot making meritorious sergeant over say- JFLED drivers or Ernie's dollies.

I attended Brian's Emergency Self-aid class when Gurnee PD hosted it. What an awesome class!!! Bardsley puts on one hell of a presentation and helped me build a basic first aid kit I carry with me at work every day. What I liked most about his class is that it focuses on SELF-AID, so I learned how to apply a tourniquet and use an IBD (Israeli Battle Dressing) to treat various types of traumatic injuries. This class should be mandatory for all police offices. Best $ 100 I ever spent.

This is ABSOLUTELY incorrect. A limb that has had a tourniquet applied is completetly viable for up to 6-8 hours after application. In a City where medical response should be measure in minutes, the possible life saving control of bleeding completely overrides the incredibly small chance of limb loss.
If you are going to post about a piece of equipment that could save an officers life, do your d**n homework.

As trying as this situation is on you, Officer Alaniz, you at least have the support of your fellow officers. Spouses generally don't have this network of support to draw from and it can become quite lonely and isolating to try and deal with this on your own. Know that she is trying to be strong for you and does not want to burden you in any way. Please let your wife know that there are people out there who are there for HER if she needs it.
It takes a special kind of person to be the wife/husband of a police officer. We are a tough breed! But sometimes we need to lean on others, and this is one of those times. Please know that you can contact me day or night, for any reason at all.

WRONG. You can keep a tourniquet on for up to 4 hours without ANY damage to the affected limb. I'm sure you can get the patient to a trauma center sooner than 4 hours. Get a CAT tourniquet (or a SOF tourniquet, basically the same thing).
Glad you are OK bro. What disturbs me though is the lack of understanding some have of first aid. I carry a tourniquet and a compression bandage in my cargo pocket for these very reasons. Both are lightweight and I don't even know they are there. Lessons are always learned out of war, and Iraq and Afghanistan have shown us tourniquets DO NOT cause limb loss if applied for a shorter period of time, which in our urban area it always will be. So if you have a heavy bleeding wound to a limb, apply tourniquet a few inches above, then apply heavy direct pressure to the wound. Now worst case scenario is if the limb is lost, the likelihood of death without this action is probable.
Brian thank you for looking at the positive in all this and not the negative. That's a great trait. Prayers go out to you and your family while you heal.

Cheers and accolades to you my friend. I couldn't agree with you more. This young cop stands out as a leader and bright spot during the dark days of this fine department.
Two clinks, scratch that, three clinks of the rock glass to you ... as a 20 year vet workin the wagon, I've seen enough heartache to drive this old man to drink a bottle of vanilla extract; dead children, headless torsos, and enough 1811's to make your head spin, but after reading this young lad's letter- it renews my faith in what my dad always said about this fine department...stay blue, watch your six, and stay classy my friend..
