Outdoor Range Problems

  • Conservationists from Chicago's Southeast Side are pushing back against a proposed outdoor police shooting range.

Members of the Calumet Ecological Park Association are worried that the frequent shooting at the outdoor range, planned for the 2000 block of East 134th Street, would disturb birds in a nearby wetland.

They also fear that gunfire would disrupt a nature education center and walking trails being built by the city east of the range site across the Calumet River near 130th Street and Torrence Avenue. The facility will cater to families and young children.

Once again, the public demands highly trained police officers, then throws every conceivable roadblock in the way of actually providing facilities to train those officers.
  • "The reality is they don't want any development in open space anywhere on the East Side," said Chicago police Lt. Ray Hamilton, who is overseeing the project. "Their position is that they support the range, just not at this location. Well, that's disingenuous."

Former policy group leader and newly "meri-clout-orious" Lieutenant Hamilton makes sense. This facility is needed and the best available space owned by the city happens to be there. We're pretty sure the birds will get used to the noise. After all, the squirrels and sparrows barely flinch on the southside and look at all the gunfire they have to endure in Englewood and Pullman.

I think you southeast side "conservationists" are a little to late.

You should have realized that when your piss started glowing in the dark.

You want a bird to come save you, or a policeman who's had some target practice?

The "environment," trees and dirt and bushes and like that, soaks up range noise pretty good. Get some berms bulldozed up for safety, that also directs a lot of noise upwards, and at any distance it's just a muffled popping. If they put up booths/dividers/a roof at the firing line that is lined with some Celotex or other sound-absorbing material, that cuts a lot of it too.

I'm in Hegewisch and I for damn sure hope they get this range. There's a ton of vacant, former industrial land that has no productive commercial use whatsoever, aside from something like a range. Perfect location, this must be done (and I'm biased- the sound of range practice and the smell of smokeless makes me proud to be an American)

As an aside, can any cops give me any inside tips on how maybe we can get some attention on a particularly troublesome Section 8 shithole?

I live on Baltimore Ave and see this every day... The red brick apartments across from Pudgies Pizza just recently took in some supreme shitheads that are of the worst nature I've ever seen. Openly dealing drugs, openly smoking weed, seriously harassing decent people walking by, including little kids. These are piranhas in the goldfish bowl and mark my words, here and now, they will eventually do something very, very, very bad.

Are there any ways to report this sort of thing to the police and actually be taken seriously and not just blown off by the person in the office taking the call?

Good to see that new Lt is working the streets. Does he know where any of the 25 district police stations are located? Does he know that some of us have to work on Saturday & Sunday? Does he ever wonder what we do between 4pm and 8am? Live it up my man, your head will be on a pike when scores get settled this March.

For reasons we officers in the 004th District can't understand is that the land north of 133rd and Avenue K is the former deposed Nike site. As in the Nike missile, not the shoe. This area is already zoned for military use. That means also weapon firing. There are already roads and concrete barricades in this area. Now it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that this is a no-brainer as far as shooting ranges go. The alderman is police friendly so we are sure it wouldn't take that much to get something set up for CPD. The environmentalists wouldn't have a thing to say on this area since it is already zoned for what we need. In fact, we'll be calling Alderman Pope in the morning to see what some blue shirts can do that the white shirts have had a problem doing for some time now.

RayRay is a tool, but he's correct on this issue.
The CPD needs an outdoor range, PERIOD.
SWAT has needed an outdoor range here
in or near our city limits for several years now.
Lots of officers certified now with the M4, and
regular re-certifications are a must. We don't
have any real decent indoor ranges left in the
five areas...they're old, and prone to constant
breakdowns, to say nothing of the air circulation/
temperature control problems. We need to get the
shotgun qualification program back up and running
again too. Lots of POs would love to have the option
to carry their own .12 gauge. The bleeding heart
bird watchers will just have to get over this. I just
hope they build the outdoor range right, and that when it's completed, those who go out there to use
it will do so RESPONSIBLY.

Retired guy speaking. I now live in a rural area and belong to a rifle club in Beloit Wi. Any day that you go there, animals, birds and wildlife of all shapes and forms walk around the grounds with rifles and pistols blazing in the background. There are some huge deer that simply look up when shots are fired and then just go back to eating. Homes are right across the street and down the road. So far the range and all the living critters are getting along pretty well. Then again, this isn't Chicago or Crook County. At least these cheesheads got it right and fired Feingold (lib dem senator) and voted a conservative into the governors office. Quinn is still gonna ruin --- oops---- I mean run Illinois and that does not speak highly for the voters of Illinois.

Use the old Brock's candy company on the west side on Cicero. It'll be easier to get to.

****************************

To clarify, on the backfield at O'Hare there is (or was) a small forest right alongside the runways and along the train tracks. And in that forest lived Deer, Racoons, Snakes and above all other things, many birds. None of those animals were bothered by massive jets taking off all day and nearly all night long every day of the week.

A few pops during the day a couple days a week doesn't mean shit, so these hiptards can go fuck themselves and worry about their own asses before they try worrying about a few birds that don't give a shit about them.

To the person living on 134th Baltimore. Good luck with getting help with that. Little to no police in Hegewisch. Fn shame aint it. The scumbags see and know this and that's why the burglaries, thefts, drug dealings, intimidation, bangers - you name it is out of control in Hegewisch. The commander is more worried about anybody that lives North of 106th street and could care less about all the rest of the good folk, you know the tax payers that live South. Unlike the beat and sector car in 008 that has to stay on the beat where all the city workers live thanks to their alderman's help. Why can't we get the same, we can but people have to stand up and say "enough". Alderman Pope has to say enough too but I don't know why he doesn't. Heard on the radio 433 got pulled off the beat again, just as usual and answered a job on 77th Coles, meanwhile lawlessness continues in good ole Hegewisch. A little birdie told me that that red brick building is owned by the police!

A properly constructed range will have backstops in place to contain the rounds being fired. I say put in the damn range and let the Police start shooting . This has a law enforcement purpose so lets not obstruct it.

Sounds odd to me. Over here in Englandland a lot of our conservation bodies are quite keen for wildlife reserves to be on ranges as the wildlife doesn't get disturbed by humans. I have been shooting on army ranges and have seen deer grazing a short distance away from the shooters. The wildlife soon gets used to gunfire when it's not directed at them.

How much is the range going to cost. How about hiring more cops with the money first and if we ever get our manpower stable, then work on other training issues and equipment. Just a thought.

You officers have got something here and am surprised this idea of yours wasn't put on paper years ago. The area is just perfect for an outdoor range. Perfect. I tryed calling Alderman Popes office today and havent recieved any answer yet on what it would take to get the ball rolling but who in the CPD should be contacted? That Nike Site as the Hegewischians call it has a lot of potential for something big. With all the politics and red tape and all I see this Nike Site as a place where future Olympians can use this land as both an INDOOR AS WELL AS AN OUTDOOR SHOOTING RANGE and have a nature center around too with walking trails. It is right near Wolf Lake. An added bonus is that the trailer court east of 133rd and Avenue K is being torn down so more land is out on that side too. Years ago, Vrydolyak was in charge of the 10th Ward and I'm sure if the cops wanted something like this then he would have helped out since his own brother was in law enforcement. I really think the FOP should get off their lazy asses and check this area out. If any corporate business is interested in helping, it would seem like a gold mine is out here for the taking.

The Nike site is far better than 2000 E. 134th street (which if you look on a map is smack in the center of the city garbage dumps, aka, a toxic waste site for over
40 years).

Pity the west, north or northwest sider that has to travel to either location during rush hour (2 hour ride?).

Why not two outdoor ranges?

It's amazing with all the vacant land closer to the center of the city, none can be found?

No land at O'Hara?

Does any of this matter anyway, city will not but bullets!

I guess that's what I'm going to have to do. I know for a fact the coppers we have working our neighborhood are great guys and plenty of times, have seen them checking that building out.

I did know a cop owned that building but didn't want to mention it myself. It's a disgrace that a police officer is behind that dump. I've seen him- in a Police SUV- delivering buckets of what was probably some sort of building material to the 'residents' who were must've been doing work for him.

Whoever this guy is, he's bad news. You cannot possibly involve yourself with people like that and not get dirty. I hope he sells that building to someone who won't use it to poison our community.

His latest batch of Section 8'ers are straight up thugs.
