Daley Lied? Gasp!

The have been only two things in Chicago history that have destroyed more historic architecture than Shortshanks:
  1. Old Man Daley
  2. The Chicago Fire
You can't blame a fire for burning things and Old Man Daley was upfront about his reasons for bulldozing landmarks (landmarks can't vote - union workers can). Shortshanks just lies about it:
  • With squatters moving in, a gaping hole in the roof and a $13.2 million price tag for rehabilitation, Mayor Daley said Thursday the city has no choice but to demolish the historic main building that once housed Michael Reese Hospital.

“It’s $2 million to tear it down, I believe. It’s about $13 million just to protect it — and we’re not gonna spend $13 million,” Daley told reporters.

The mayor acknowledged that he made a promise to preservationists to spare the historic main building at 2839 S. Ellis.

But, he said, “You can’t. We don’t have $13 million to enclose that. . . . The city doesn’t have it — especially in these very difficult economic times. . . . If the structure was sound — if there was no hole in the roof — you would save it. But there’s a huge hole in the roof. How are you gonna save it?”

Well, that could have been done in an orderly manner years ago with proper planning. But Shanks was in such a hurry to set up his developer "friends" for No-lympic glory, any shortcut would do.

"...that could have been done in an orderly manner years ago with proper planning."

But that WAS his plan; to let it go so long, so that it would be so damaged and too costly to repair.

He's a master of this sort of thing.

Then it's just a short(shanks) path, to as you said, take care of his connected buddies.

This MF-er has robbed the city of almost all that is good. It's little wonder he's fleeing now, and he can't leave soon enough!

Yes, I seem to recall another preservation promise King Richard made, when Maxwell Street took a hit for UIC and housing 'progress'.

He promised the facades, at least, of the historic row of buildings along Roosevelt Road would be taken down piece by piece and reinstalled as the project neared completion.

Someone should check the City warehouses. I betcha those facades are long gone. Better yet, check the new construction done by some connected developers. There are probably some lovely greystone storefronts or home facades newly installed somewhere in the area.

Basically, he'll say ANYTHING to mollify people, to get them to back off while he does whatever he damned well pleases.

The purchase of that land is another one of Daley's down your throat deals, just like the parking meter deal.

And, the aldermen just let it happen.

The cost to maintain all that land now owned by the city is going to be one more perpetual financial black hole to the Chicago taxpayer due to the incompetence of Daley and the Council of Eunechs.

The name Chicago supposedly meant "Land of stinky onions" in the language of some native american tribe.

Daley and the aldermen have given it a new meaning, "Land of piles of stinky, steaming, rotten to the core costly, Daley deals." The term often seen here, Shitcago comes to mind.

Daley's Ceasar's Complex, incompetence and liberal policies have destroyed Chicago's future.

In the comming years, he'll be villified on the street by those who have a clue.

God willing, I won't be here to see it. I'm moving my family out of Cook County as fast as possible and that's not going so good because everyone who has a clue, and is able to, is running for the exits at the same time.

Watch the population figures for Chicago over the next 5 years. Very likely, the people who pay taxes are leaving IL in increasing volumes and the people that don't are comming in or at least the percentage that don't pay taxes will be in an ever sprialing trajectory.

Statewide, the same thing with Democrats like Quinn and Madigan at the helm (Amazing, most all the state rejects Quinn and the Stinky Patch puts him over the top. The rest of IL is gonna tire of that fast.).

In the last 25 years IL has lost -- 25% --of its' manufacturing base!

And there sits a big chunk of potentially prime real estate whose development is going to be radically complicated by its city ownership.

Imagine what's going to happen when someone goes to develop it. The political contributions that will be required. The thousand strings the City Council will attach to the deal that will skew the economics of new development to the point where it may never happen (or, the ususal solution, will require city subsidies to private development).

Didn't anyone notice how badly other city development schemes have gone? Try Block 37, which has cost the city a small fortune, and sat empty for decades, and now that what the city thought vital was constructed, it sits empty and unfinished.

The city oughta simply auction off the Reese land and let someone develop it.

You might not like Daley, you might despise him. But I know a lot of people who are afraid of who is coming next. People want stability. Chicago is in no worse financial shape then the other major cities in this country, more corrupt, yes, but not in worse financial shape. We will never know what could have been accomplished if Daley was incorruptable and believed in ethics, fairplay, fair contracts and would not tolerate cronysim and nepotism. He made his friends and family rich through government contracts and connections. The old saying, " the devil you know is better then the devil you don't know" might come back to bite us all. It is the fear of the unknown.

Our mayor not only promised to keep Meigs Field open, he signed an agreement with the Governor of Illinois to that effect!

A document, signed by our mayor, on paper signed in ink that I presume still exists somewhere waiting for someone to run out of toilet paper so they can wipe their ass with said document.

Daley lied about Michael Reese? Please, he lies when he signs his name to paper. He lies to reporters. He lies to we citizens. He lies to the FBI when he is under oath.

So what the fuck good is a worthless verbal promise not to tear down a run down empty former hospital building?

No good at all if it is made by Richard M Daley.

Sorry to hear that. Probably more a bad doctor than the whole place, though, huh?

I was born there, had my life saved there, had family members pass on there. A thousand stories in the Naked City.

I did like that original old main building with the curving entrance; what a shame it's to be torn down.

Now EDGEWATER you can do as you please with...there were a LOT of nasty, incompetent people there, from the kid who held the door in the lobby all the way up. Refill a bottle of sterile water for respiratory therapy with tap water -- right in front of you, like you were going to breathe all that rust and chlorine -- so they could bill the state for another $97.00 a liter.

Boy, did I laugh the day they got shut down for massive fraud...Place is still there, all closed up...

...yes. It's happening before our eyes. Mostly poor and illegals taking over. Taxes they don't pay...money is sent out via Western Union to Mexico. The anchor kids are being educated on our dime, not theirs. Once middle class properties are turning into ghtetto-land, home of the section 8. All these people are on some sort of welfare, whether it is state or fed funded....who's paying for this? The middle class schlumps. I don't see them doing any upkeep on the property, all I see is grass growing high with weeds, litter and curtains flying out of the open windows, grafitti, etc. We can thank Daley and the dummycrats and even the GOP for allowing this situation to run amok. I too, will be leaving not only cook county, but the state of IL ASAP, as soon as I retire. The "good" neighborhoods are few and far between and I'm not going to pay any more taxes to upkeep the welfare runners.

But look at all the small independent methamphetamine producers that have been added in that time. The USA still produces good local meth. That rise in meth labs has enabled the hiring of many new prison guards and has proved a real boon to the rural dentist who can spend a good portion of their time pulling the teeth of meth addicts.

I wish you could see my 1800-page, 1959 copy of the Illinois Manufacturers' Directory; it is truly the annals of a lost civilization. Just one quick example -- that lethally dangerous desert area along Lake Street used to be a roaring, jam-packed manufacturing district. They did not put that "L" in to serve a few nail parlors and chicken shacks.

As future Chicago mayor, I have immediate plans for the Michael Reese property which the city purchased several years ago. With venture capitalists and hedge fund managers I would like to set up a technology park partially owned by the city. The "Silicon Valley" of the Midwest right here in Chicago.

I don't think we, as the city, should lose money on every deal we make. We will be able to collect rent on the property. Also, many jobs will be created for the City of Chicago. It will become a tech incubator for innovation.

Something like this is needed to attract the intellectuals to the major universities and retain the graduates here. Plus, with private funding investments the new perspective companies can be grown and developed locally.

The City of Chicago needs to be run more like a business. Businesses don't make money losing deals time and time again. The Michael Reese property can be put to great use by the city and can make money too!

From next year, let's make sure every deal the city makes is not a losing deal for the citizens of Chicago.

Let's make it happen!

forget the tech shit and just build a bunch of facilities to manufacture generic versions of every item that current link card holders regularly purchase, ie., shoes, clothing, food, etc., restrict the use of link cards to the purchasing of only said manufactured goods, make said link card holders do the manufacturing and pay them with the link card income they're compelled to use to purchase what they manufacture.

Your Link Card remark is funny and interesting... But, I believe in your hidden meaning. I also believe if one collects assistance, one should start to work for it as well, after a certain period of time. Work... be paid with the Link Card, buy what you manufacture...not bad.

Financial assistance from the government should be temporary until that person can support himself/herself. It is not meant to be a permanent crutch. There is too much abuse to even mention...

the one inherent problem with those receiving taxpayer financed handouts being required to use their own hands to produce the basic goods our taxes are providing to them is that retail merchants, cheap foreign goods importers/distributors and all other businesses who the handout addicts patronize will cry like little babies if this were to happen.

a substantial percentage of goods and services are purchased with monies first taken via taxes from those who work and doled out to those who don't work.

in effect, each and every working, taxpaying citizen is being compelled to economically add at least one other dependent member to his/her family, thus increasing the income for a wide variety of business interests.

from section 8, link, wic, etc., a large amount of profit is being made, which those who make it would not be thrilled to lose.

so, not only are the working, taxpaying citizens being fleeced by the handout hustlers, they are also being fleeced by those in the business community profiting from the portion of their sales provided by the handout recipients.

The CPS, (Chicago Public School municipal agency), as all other City of Chicago municipal agencies, has 3 functions, 1 publicly proclaimed, and the other 2 privately understood.

The publicly proclaimed function is to provide, to all school aged children residing within the municipal boundaries of the City of Chicago, with the opportunity to receive an effective education in the subjects necessary to prepare them for their presumed futures as productive and self supporting members of our society.

The 2 privately understood functions are: 1) provide generous incomes to selected, politically cooperative individuals, via padded employment payrolls, and 2) provide egregiously lucrative contract business income to selected, politically cooperative individuals, via unnecessarily bloated purchasing arrangements.

Presuming that your inquiry concerning 'fixing' the CPS is not merely an attempt at discovering who may, upon being elected mayor, be proposing future actions to reduce/eliminate all activities not necessary to achieving the publicly proclaimed function of the Chicago Public Schools municipal agency, (for the purpose of preventing the election, as mayor, of anyone threatening to remove the privately understood functioning of the CPS from this municipal agency's budget), the obvious answer to your question begins with publicly exposing the massive costs of this city agency's functioning as a financial conduit dispensing the taxpayers' monies to selected, politically supportive individuals and businesses.

A bureaucracy as massive and corrupted as the CPS cannot be both 'fixed' and allowed to remain substantially as it is, as the majority portion of it's privately defined functioning has nothing to do with educating our children.

The first prerequisite to 'fixing' anything is a rigorous commitment to truth, ie., an inherent personal honesty.

Can you handle the truth?

SCC... sorry if this is coming through a couple times. I keep getting an error message. I will send in 2 parts, i think it's too long. Thanks! John Hu

It is true... I talk a lot about what I will do for the police department, but its only because I assumed most contributors were CPD. I am concerned with every part of Chicago, from the teachers, to the firefighters, to police officers, all Chicago citizens. My sister was CPS for 9 years before moving out to the burbs. Many of my closest friends are CPD and CFD. And finally, my Mom is a working nurse for the last 40 years.

You're right when you say CPS needs a lot of help. What will I do for CPS when I become Mayor?

Many candidates want to only throw money at the CPS problem, but the real underlying issue is not money. It's the parents involvement in their children's lives, in the schools and in the community. It starts there!

If you examine some of the more successful schools on the northside of the city, the parents are involved in everything, every aspect of what goes on in their children's education, what after-school programs are available, the PTA, fundraisers for new computers, if their children need it they find a way to get it, etc.

The CPS has a similar problem the CPD has currently. There is lack of true leadership at the top. Leadership which is respected and loyally followed with trust. I believe in the top-down theory when it comes to effective leadership. The example must be set at the top. CPS needs someone who was an educator, licensed and has the right certifications. They don't need someone who knows nothing about what a teacher goes through on a daily basis, what the children need, how to utilize the teachers they have and work smoothly with CTU (chicago teachers union).

(cont...)

I will hire a "true" superintendent of schools for the Chicago Public School system. The CPS school district is one of the largest in the U.S. I will work with the new superintendent to break down the overall size into smaller more manageable districts. This way the districts who are doing well and not having any major problems will be allowed to follow their current course. But districts where class sizes are up to 45, there are no teachers' aides, there is only 1 social worker for 5-6 schools and a shortage of books, supplies and computers will be rectified. We will attack these areas as "hot spots" just like the CPD. Not only with much needed resources and money, but with more help from social workers for the children and parents. Teachers today are asked to do 2 jobs in these schools in underprivileged areas. 1st, one of teacher, 2nd that of social worker. How can we ask our teachers to effectively teach classes when they have to stop and take the time to do social work?

Plus, many of the after-school programs, sports, art and other beneficial things have been eliminated....they will be back again! More parental involvement will be required and necessary to make sure the children, our future, will have the education and ability to succeed one day.

You are probably wondering where will all this money come from? Within 2 weeks in office, I plan to hire an outside auditor, with no connections to the City of Chicago to complete a "forensic audit" of each and every area of Chicago government incl CPD, CFD, CPS, everyone! I want to know where every revenue dollar comes in and from where, also every expenditure that goes out and for what. We will find millions upon millions of waste, mismanagement and inefficiency.

With all the wasted dollars found, I will hire 1000+ new police officers next year, I will hire new social workers for all the underprivileged schools, I will balance the city budget without raising your property taxes, etc.

When I say I want to be the voice for the average citizen, middle income worker, and proud Chicagoan, I mean it!

Let's make a difference Chicago!
