J-Fled, Shortshanks Muzzled

It was nice to see the politicos take a back seat to what really mattered - a man taken from his family far too soon:
  • The wail of bagpipes and a phalanx of fellow officers silently standing salute greeted the remains of slain fallen Chicago Police evidence technician Michael Flisk at St. Rita of Cascia Church Wednesday.

  • During the service, police Supt. Jody Weis was invited to speak by the Rev. Tom Mulcrone, but after walking to the front he told the priest that the family preferred to hear only from Fliskā€™s daughter.
We'd also like to extend our thanks to all the outside units and agencies that showed up to support us in our grief. The Honor Guard, too well-versed in their duties this year. The Pipe Bands. CFD was great as always - we tease them on occasion, but when the chips are down and the dress blues come out, well...

We heard NYPD had a contingent here and some poor cop from the west coast arrived without winter gear. Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Iowa and who knows how many other "flyover" states were represented along with our own Illinois State troopers (if we missed you, let us know in the comments - we couldn't see everyone). And our suburban brethren from across the area. You make us proud to be part of that thin blue line, unfortunately, one member thinner this cold December day. Thank you one and all.

The Band, Honor Guard, the Mounted, the P.P.O.s and all the rest freezing at the cemetery to say goodbye to a hero. Really impressive. It is what family does.

It's true about CFD. We jab each other back and forth a little, but they're always there for us. While escorting Officer Flisk to the morgue that fatal day, I saw CFD lined up on almost every street corner with Ladders up over the street and there they were saluting us -- that really got to me. If anything made me tear up that day, it was that.

Agreed. The razzing between CFD and CPD is all in jest, but I'll tell ya what, those CFD guys standing out there in the cold bringing coffee to the mourners was much appreciated at the wake. An hour or so to wait to pay respects, but they stayed out all night taking care of us. God bless us all, CPD & CFD.

God bless the Flisk, Blake, an Peters families during what will be a sad an rough holiday season.

So glad the family didn`t allow the two phonies to speak. I remember back in 1970 the rabblerouser Jesse Jackson wanted to attend Sgt. Severin`s wake. Severin and Tony Rizzato were assasinated at Cabrini Green. Jessie`s people were told that if he shows up he get`s his ass kicked. Jesse made a wise decision.

Glad to see these two a-holes weren't allowed to politicize Flisk's mass. Weis has been on every TV show and radio program that will give him airtime in his rather obvious bid to save his job/change his image/schmooze his way into another job.

Too bad channel 5 TV put Rahm on while he made an appearance at the benefit at the FOP hall.

What the hell was he doing there and why did they even bother to talk to him? They also mentioned that Chico was there, but he either didn't rate a TV appearance or (hopefully) was too classy to put himself on TV during this event.

Either way, now's the time to start drilling mayoral candidates to determine who's going to do his/her best for CPD and the rest of the city employees.

Dont forget Ohio and the great city of Cleveland. They had at least 4 members of their honor guard at the funeral today. Plus I saw an NYPD copper at the benefit tonight at the FOP hall. He was from the 19th precinct in New York City and truly a class act. If he reads this blog he will know that I am talking about him. Its a welcoming feeling to see all of us standing together on such a sad day. And Kudos to Michael's sister who is a Sgt. in 009. Her speech tonight at the FOP hall was a tear jerker and the ending was priceless. Its on days like today that make me most proud to say I am CPD.

Thank you St. Rita for opening up your auditorium so we could see and hear the service (and keep warm).

And shame on the F/1 exempt in the auditorium who was wearing an iPod for most of the service!!! I was trying to see her name plate, so I could bust her here, but couldn't get close enough. She had close cropped black/grey hair, was in the front row and kept getting up and walikng around (hey everybody, look at me! I'm important!).

I'm glad the family didn't want to hear J-Fled and Daley's fake, phoney and cookie cutter speach. These two clowns are the scorn of the city and could care less about any police officer. They just go through the motions and act like they care for a minuet because as politicians they have to. Everyone knows that they hate us and they have no business talking to anyone. J-Fled and his crew of phoneys make me sick every time I see them in our uniform.

I just laugh now whenever I see the poster that states, "Chicago Police, Earned Not Given." It's time to get rid of that motto.

If I was ever killed line of duty, I wouldn't want either of those scum bags near my wake and funeral. Every time that phony J-Fled wears our uniform, it's like spitting in our faces. No respect. No common decency. Damn him to hell.

New Trier hall of fame: Rumsfeld in, Rahm out

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and Rainn Wilson, who plays goofball Dwight K. Schrute on "The Office?" You bet. But actress Ann-Margret and Chicago mayoral candidate Rahm Emanuel? Forget it. Winnetka's New Trier Township High School Wednesday released the winners of its first-ever alumni Hall of Honor awards, based on a commitment to "inquiry, compassion and service."

So Rham having been BORN in a Chicago hosptial and raised in Winnetka can't even get an award from his high school but a commedian on tv can. Ha Ha Ha Ha
Just shows how much Rahm has given back to the community.

The service was professional and well coordinated as always. Unfortunately we all had to come together for a very bad reason. I worked the funeral yesterday and two guys with very funny looking badges came up and asked if it was alright to attend. They told me they were from Serbia and were here to extradite someone. Instead of leaving once their subject was in custody they stayed for several extra days after they had heard about Mike, saying they wanted to pay their respects to a fallen officer. Class act. Thank you officers.

Panel Recommends Abolishing Death Penalty In Illinois

A plan to abolish the death penalty in Illinois has cleared a legislative committee and is on its way to the full House for debate.

A judiciary panel approved the measure by a 4-to-3 margin.

The bill's sponsor, Democratic State Representative Karen Yarbrough, indicated she may call the bill for a vote on the House floor sometime Tuesday.

No one has been executed in Illinois since then-Governor George Ryan ordered a moratorium on capital punishment in 2000

More tips n' clues...
Yes, many outside departments were represented at church on Wednesday.
There were also two detectives from Serbia in attendance, here in Chicago on an extradition. They likewise attended to honor our fallen.
Real class acts...Thank You one and all.
In the past Chicago has not sent sent representatives to outside agency wakes/funerals.
Now with the introduction of a relatively new organization, 'The Brotherhood of the Fallen,' Chicago is represented by uniformed members of the organization throughout the U.S.
They deserve our support as well.
We can't say enough though about our other most worthwhile organizations.
Our Chicago Police Memorial Foundation initially presented the Flisk family with a check for $50,000.00 for support and expenses. In the future, all of the (4) children will have all of their grammar and high school educations paid by the CPMF in addition to additional school expenses along with Christmas gifts for those kids annually.
The 100 Club will also generously pay all the college tuition of those children as well.
Last, but certainly not least our Police Chaplains Ministry throughout the year supports all our Gold Star Families in various functions. (It was also learned that while the Flisk fundraiser was in progress at the FOP hall, volunteers from the Chaplains Ministry were packing boxes full of meaningful gifts for our members presently away, serving in the military.)

My point? Each of the aforementioned organizations give of themselves to support our department in various ways.
ALL of them exist because of your support and generosity. Please continue to do the 'right thing' and support them in any way possible.
All we have is one another in that... "Thin Blue Line"

God Bless All That Served

I think God and Mike were watching over us yesterday. I don't know how many people caught the trasmission over CW6 about 10 minutes into the procession when PH1 called over that it was having control problems and had to try to get back and land. Thank God they made it alright. They are always there for us. I remember one of the recent funerals where they asked to do a flyover in respect of the fallen officer. Car 49 denied it. How surprising. Glad they made it back safe yesterday.

Anyone know how much $$ Rahm passed when he walked thru the door?

It really was a nice service. I attended the whole thing and even went to the fundraiser later that night. Hats off to Anita Alvarez who showed up at the funeral. However, Jessie Jackson Jr.'s wife was there and she was giggling and laughing it up with a hispanic alderman next to her the whole time. They even had a big bear hug and laughs before the processing started. Such scum!

Rahm Emanuel spent his 51st birthday with Carol Marin on Chicago Tonight.

Marin gave him the gift of publicity -- 15 minutes on Chicagoā€™s most popular public affairs program -- but she didnā€™t give him any easy questions. Hereā€™s what Emanuel had to say about some of Chicagoā€™s most important issues.

Pension reform: Emanuel suggested that not only should the city start new police and firefighters with lower benefits, it should re-examine the benefits of current employees.

ā€œItā€™s not an honest system for the people who are in it, because these benefits are something weā€™re going to have a difficult time keeping, and itā€™s not an honest system to the taxpayer, because weā€™re going to ask them to do something theyā€™re not capable of doing&hellipTheyā€™re not on a sustainable course. We have to have an honest discussion about the changes that are going to be necessary.ā€

Emanuel also suggested starting a ā€œwellness programā€ modeled after the grocery store chain Safeway, which requires workers with unhealthy habits, such as smoking or obesity, to pay more for health insurance.

Keeping Ald. Edward Burke as chairman of the City Council Finance Committee: ā€œIā€™m not going to talk about that right now, for the simple reason that I have to run for mayor. I have to get elected. Making decisions like that are not in my purview. He has done a service since 1969. He has been Finance Committee chair for 20 years.ā€

Whether he will be a boss-style mayor: ā€œWe have to have a partnership between the mayor and the city council and that is on two fronts. You know weā€™re going to have about 15 new aldermen. Youā€™re going to have a new mayor. Thatā€™s an opportunity for Chicago to have a new course.ā€

On whether we can get out of the parking meter deal: ā€œSince we took the money, and rather than invest in our schools, our transportation system, we paid operating costs. That moneyā€™s out the door. Weā€™ll never get that back. It is always a mistake to privatize something and not use the money to invest in future resources like new schools and a more modern mass transit system. Those are capital investments you should do &hellip that was a big mistake.ā€

On his possible testimony in Rod Blagojevichā€™s re-trial: ā€œThe transition office gave four names: Jan Schakowsky, Jesse Jackson Jr., Dan Hynes and Tammy Duckworth. They came back said, ā€˜Whatā€™s in it for the governor?ā€™ I said, ā€˜Thanks, and appreciation.ā€™ā€

Emanuel wasnā€™t especially smooth, and even seemed nervous at times. But Richard M. Daley has set the bar for mayoral articulateness so low that just speaking in complete sentences was enough to make Emanuel sound like the greatest orator since Barack Obama. Whoever wins this election, weā€™ll finally have a mayor we can all understand.

ANYBODY WHO VOTES FOR THIS GUY IS NUTS

The service was professional and well coordinated as always. Unfortunately we all had to come together for a very bad reason. I worked the funeral yesterday and two guys with very funny looking badges came up and asked if it was alright to attend. They told me they were from Serbia and were here to extradite someone. Instead of leaving once their subject was in custody they stayed for several extra days after they had heard about Mike, saying they wanted to pay their respects to a fallen officer. Class act. Thank you officers.

You are an idiot. The Mayor and Superintendent have never before been excluded from speaking at the services of an officer killed in the line of duty and, considering the height of the current tension between the police and the Mayor and between the police and the Superintendent, people are bound to see a subliminal message when neither was allowed to speak at Officer Flisk's services.

Besides, with the Flisk family choosing to have a sole speaker, which was Officer Flisk's daughter, they did not have to SPECIFICALLY exclude the Shanks and the Fled or anyone else. The family handled a very touchy situation in a very insightful and civilized manner, but they muzzled the shanks and the fled just the same. Kudos to Officer Flisk's family.

I'd like to send my condolences to the Flisk family and the rest of our CPD family. I was unable to attend any of the services due to my obligations in another part of the world but enjoyed reading most of the comments about the services on SCC. A salute goes out to our Brothers at CFD for their show of Dignity and I commend them for their Honor and Loyalty especially at this time of need. I would like to comment on the F/1 of exempt rank that was in attendance wearing iPod earplugs. I find it disgraceful, unprofessional and disrespectful not only to the Flisk Family but to everyone else who gathered on that day. That classless act cannot pass without requiring her to answer to a higher authority. If she is that blatant out in public, it just makes me wonder what she does all day while in her little office at 35th St. Don't wait for the brass to make her answer for her actions, anyone that witnessed this can initiate a CR. In parting, I just want to remind my Brothers in Blue to Stay Strong, Stay United and cover one another out there. I'll see you again in June 2011.

If you don't want to vote for him don't, but stop the bs; he waited in line like everyone else, went to the fundraiser and dropped 500 hundred, he walked around and talked at length with many officers, he gave ch5 a 1 minute interview while there for well over an hour. The penalty for speaking the truth in public is banishment. As a current employee I cannot afford the luxury of loosing my position. Weiss and Cuello are famous at punishing those that speak the truth. Weiss can ignore ignorant and crude behavior by exempt rank. If a blue shirt speaks out they are punished. I think its great that jfled and shortshanks were asked not to speak. The family did it respectfully by informing them a few days ahead of time. The eulogy is always more heartwarming and personal when given by a family member or friend. Most priests that give the eulogy these days don't really know the deceased and it sounds awkward. A great job by the Flisk Family at their time of sorrow.

Say what you want about her, and she does have a lot of command skills lacking, but she scored extremely high on both sgts and lt exams. First classes both times strictly on exam scores. No merit there. You can blame Johns Richardson and Stroger for any promotions after that, along with everyone's favorite stuperintendent Terry Hillard.

While standing outside of the church, prior to the arrival of the hearse, the family was huddled together in the cold. I am not sure how many witnessed this but Mike's daughter Peg was really shivering and it seemed like forever before the hearse arrived. Her mom and brothers were doing their best to keep her warm. When out of the blue an exempt broke rank, with many others watching her freeze, and went up to Peg. He took off his long reefer coat and wrapped it around her. It was a very moving moment as she really started to cry. The exempt retuned to his place and remained in the cold with not much to keep himself warm, and Peg's mom & siblings comforted her. So to that exempt I say hats off to you. You sir are truly a class act!!!

Rahm also showed up at the Wake, slipped in the back door so as not to sully himself with the common man, and once inside, upon noting that there was no media presence... left.

Regardless of his politics, THIS IS BULLSHIT. I was right behind him in line, he waited like everyone else. He went in like everyone else, paid his respects and left a bit later. Yes he said hello to people inside of the funeral home. The guy has spent his life in this town, he knows people. He made it his business to thank two NYPD coppers that were behind him.

Like I said, I am not his biggest fan, but the truth is the truth.

On a cold and sad day I have never seen such a thing in my career in the NYPD. You all should be proud for the support and love you have shown the Flisk family. I never have felt so proud of my brothers as I did this week. From Chicago to Cleveland to San Diego and the dozen of other departments that showed your support and yes even the fire department. My heart was touched forever. For the Flisk family and my dear friend Megan my heart could never express how I feel to you. To mikes kids my God you can never be so proud to have such amazing children and the strength they showed. I love you all and you all made me feel so proud to be what we are and i love you all. Stay safe and watch over each other God knows no one else will and I hope my next visit will be a better one.

If true, then don't write anonymously on the blog. Put name on paper and demand a CR for conduct bringing discredit on the department and list the egregious conduct and sign your name to it.

jody understands egregious conduct.

Then she will have to answer for it.

Send a scanned copy of the initiation to-from to SCC and to every news organization in the city and post it on every bulletin board in the police department.

Bet she doesn't do it again.

The famous dual standard.

I work a beat car in a district. Where would they "banish" me?

Unfortunately I did not see this incident and by all that is good and holy I swear I would put pen to paper if I had. I've done it before.

So you're saying if you speak the truth in public you are afraid they may send you to a unit you don't like, hence the silence. Is that about right?

Keep your "position" because I know just what that position is, holding your ankles while you get it up the bum.

Keep your silence too you eunuch.

Is there a sworn with some stones to write a CR complaint on the idiot exempt wearing ear buds inside the funeral?

If anyone is retaliated against, go into Automated Directives and search for Equal Employment Opportunity. You should find a .pdf complaint form that is self-explanatory. One of the check boxes is for Retaliation. Fill that out, call the union for advice and get a lawyer.

That is, if you can afford the luxury of losing your "position" and have the intestinal fortitude to stand up for what is right.

Every single man, woman and child in attendance at that funeral was a hero just as much as Officer Flisk and he'd be the FIRST man to tell you so. You didn't have to go, you went because it was the RIGHT thing to do. In a city filled with people, even our elected officials, who often don't do the right thing, you did the right thing. You did it as a unified sea of brotherhood and sisterhood. Does it matter who had an earbud on or who laughed. We are brothers and sisters, and as God has shown us in the last year, brothers and sisters who lives are respected only by those of us who will do the next right thing. I salute you, you Band of Brothers. You are Honor. You are Heroes all.

Probably right. Could someone pass along the name of whichever candidate WON'T fuck us?

I'll stand by.
