Show of Support

Not a bad idea:
  • Over twenty years ago when I was a new police officer, I remember that we were all requested to put a “Blue Light” in our window during the holiday season in honor of our fallen brothers and sisters from the current year and years past. I have not heard of anyone doing this for many years.

We have suffered many losses this year and I think it is time to bring back this tradition. Would you please assist me in this mission and somehow get the message out to all our members, family and friends.

Please let the “Blue Light” shine during this holiday season and all the holiday seasons to come.
Not a bad idea at all.

We do it out in the Hampshire/Burlington Il area. Small town living is wonderful. Eleven years retired and loving it.

I used to do this but I stopped years ago. I realized it's an advertisement for burglars looking for guns.

Do remember this, I purposely put blue lights on the trees in front of my house instead of multi-colored or clear lights.

Better yet how about we take those blue lights and throw them thru the window of the detail unit p/o who threatened to arrest and continually harass one of our extremely recently deceased officers son for wearing his fathers police hat. This piece of shit p/o was previously fired, ran out of 11, but still remains on the job, WTF!!!!! I've heard the story from two different sources, if anyone out there has an account of this it needs to be heard.

I would love to do something to show my love for the police tradition and especially to remember fallen officers. However, if only police officers do it, it would be an invitation for assholes to know where we live, and possibly an invitation to burglarize homes in search of guns.

Not a bad idea at all. Your heart is definitely in the right place...as is mine with this sentiment. I also remember this method of honoring the fallen. Unfortunately, times have changed my friend.

That being said, we all know that less-than-legitimate "people" read this blog. The last thing we coppers need is more advertising as to where we can be found off duty...especially at our homes. Same goes for family members. That last thing I'd want is some shitbird home invading my elderly parents because he thinks a copper lives there and he's got a chance at walking out with weapons and/or other valuables.

Direct this positive energy elsewhere that can benefit families of fallen officers, retires coppers, terminally ill police, etcetera.

And if you REALLY still feel the need to put a blue light in a window, may I suggest blindingly illuminating the Daley residence, the Weis household or your choice of a plethora of Bossholes' homes that might benefit from such type of decoration.

Concerns of Police Survivors (www.nationalcops.org) has run a Blue Light campaign every year. From their website:
"Don’t miss out on this opportunity to show your support for officers who have made the supreme sacrifice and officers who continue to work the violent streets of our nation.  The color blue is symbolic of peace.  By displaying your blue lights, you will be sending a dual message; that you support America’s peacekeepers and that you hope the coming year will be a year of peace.  The blue candlestick with a blue LED light is inscribed with “Project Blue Light” and the C.O.P.S. logo."

FYI:
C.O.P.S. has approximately 47 Chapters in the U.S., including one in Illinois (ilcops.org). The national organization has been around for 25 years assisting
survivors of law enforcement officers in rebuilding their shattered lives. They host the conference and seminars
during National Police Week in D.C. that the survivors attend. The offer counseling & scholarships to survivors.
And they have a Kids Camp & Outward Bound in the summer for the children of fallen Officers that is free to them except for travel expenses. They also hold retreats
every year for just about every category of survivor - and this past year held their first retreat for coworkers of law enforcement Officers killed in the line of duty.

I'd like to hear more about this guy from the detail unit messing with a coppers kid over a hat. As far as a blue light in front of my house, that idea is just as stupid today as it was thirty years ago when it was first proposed.

4477, you are right, Hampshire/Burlington is nice living. But you are still in Illinois. A move just a little north into Wisconsin would be even better. I thought about moving out to Hampshitre when I pull the pin but came to my senses and am looking elsewhere.

once upon a time it was appropriate to advertise that you were the police--- fop medallions plastered all over the car and hat band dangling from the rear view mirror---- while I am still very proud to be a police officer in the city of chicago, I have nothing on my vehicle to indicate to anyone that I am a cop--- likewise, I would be a little reserved to advertise to the world that I am the police at my own home--- a good idea, but maybe put the lights inside the house somewhere....

the only public display I put out is at X-mas, and it is the string of "POLICE" blue lights that wrap around the picture window on the front of my house.

I'm not an officer, but there will definitely be a blue light in my window. I am very thankful for the wonderfully kind officers that helped me when I was attacked downtown beat 1833. Thank you. All you guys (men and women) don't ever get enough credit for everything you do.

Got a blue star in one street facing light, blue bulb in the other.

Fuck burglars, come get some. Better hope you guess right as to when I'm home, and be prepared for a 110 lb dog that doesn't like strangers.

Off to get my new unit tat. Anyone have a good idea for a callback logo?

Let some scumbag break in when no one is home. My dogs would love to play. Besides in my neighborhood you can't throw a stick without hitting a cop's house. Everyone knows that so a blue light won't really make much difference. Also my place is pretty secure with a good alarm and mosey neighbors oh and by the way I have a great gun safe

Great idea with the blue light, but nowadays its not worth it. Have a burglary to your home and it fucks up your life, for months even years. Guns, ammo, jewelry, money all taken from me. House destroyed! A big financial hit. Be safe and do something else.

I think the blue light is a great idea. I first did it the Christmas after Officer Ceriale was killed. I then explained to my son why we have it in the window, but it's more important to us because it's for his father who was an officer. My husband is deceased and for my son it's a light for his Daddy's friends and Daddy. As for the burglars if it's an advertisement, then so is my neighbor screaming for my husband to help when her husband is beating her or when his friends jump him[ believe it or not this is not the ghetto just hilbilly neighbors].I too am lucky enough to have officers surround me,an alarm, a huge ass german shepherd and a glock as beautiful as my shepherd. Yes you "guys" have been targets but putting a blue light in your window is not just one tell , there are many and you guys also know that. Have faith in your neighbors watching your house, in yourselves and your beat officers watching your house. Please keep safe, come home to your families and keep warm.

I am the daughter of a Chicago Police Officer killed in the line of duty and would first like to thank all of the men and women who risk their lives everyday. You are truly my HEROES. The blue light shows not only the police that the community respects them but it also shows people like me that you remember those who have fallen. Thank you all and have a safe holiday.
