Again?

Disturbing:
  • Found out today that Streets and Sanitation snow removal is up to their old tricks again. Remember last year when Sgt. Haymaker was killed in a traffic accident and there was some blame about Streets and Sanitation being ordered to stop salting. Well, today's snow response had the same order given. There was an order given about 2 hours ago to stop salting. Proves even more that the city does not care about safety, only the bottom dollar. What ever happened to the investigation into Sgt. Haymaker's death? chirp....chirp.
Whatever did happen to that investigation? We noticed that more than a few main thoroughfares we're less than ideally plowed and salted today and the snow coming down didn't seem like the type to actually overwhelm plowing efforts.

If an order was given to slow or cease salting or to lift plow blades, would we ever find out? We know all CPD radio transmissions are archived for a set period of time. Does anyone know if the Streets and San radio chatter is even saved at all?

Too many questions.

Stayed in today and didn't venture out til around 1400hrs. I was surprised to find many MAIN streets on the northwest side dangerously snow and ice filled.

Plowing would have been great. Salt would have been pretty miraculous.

Wouldn't you think, by mid-afternoon, the streets would have been cleared? I'd shoveled my walk TWICE by then. Maybe my ever-rising tax dollars could have bought me at least one plow-sighting as I drove through 017, 014 and 019?

Nothing to worry about. 025, McVicker north of Grand -- in front of the radical-Hispanic church/"charter school" -- was plowed out and salted almost immediately.

Now that's side-street service. Want your street plowed, get your own Che Guevara flag.

The junk trucks can get through easier too. Everyone's a winner in the Sanctuary City!

TIPS & CLUES
Keep your headlights clear with car wax! Just wipe ordinary car wax on your headlights. It contains special water repellents that will prevent that messy mixture from accumulating on your lights - lasts 6 weeks.

Squeak-proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol! Wipe the wipers with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia. This one trick can make badly streaking & squeaking wipers change to near perfect silence & clarity

Ice-proof your windows with vinegar! Frost on it's way? Just fill a spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water & spritz it on all your windows at night. In the morning, they'll be clear of icy mess. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting point of water---preventing water from freezing!

Prevent car doors from freezing shut with cooking spray! Spritz cooking oil on the rubber seals around car doors & rub it in with a paper towel The cooking spray prevents water from melting into the rubber

Fog-proof your windshield with shaving cream! Spray some shaving cream on the inside of your windshield & wipe if off with paper towels. Shaving cream has many of the same ingredients found in commercial defoggers.

De-ice your lock in seconds with hand sanitizer! Just put some hand sanitizer gel on the key & the lock & the problems solved!

Well, SCC it's 3am and I was just woken up by a meeting of (2) plows and I guess the other guy was a Streets and Sans Supervisor. As one of the plows drove away the Supervisor waved him down and yelled, "No salt" and gave a motion for him to pick up his plow....

I have no idea what's going on with this plowing.

The city had what they call a 50% program going until 1300 hours then they called garbage drivers in and put them on spreaders.100% program was in effect from about 1400 hours as the city saw it could not keep up.They didn't want a bad rush hour.

I remember when i was learning to drive that the city side streets were never cleared. The side streets only became a issue during an election year after the blizzard of '79.

I for one feel its a waste of money to take care of the side streets. People have forgotten how to drive. In these these bad economic times city goverment must reduce services in order to save money. I got a great idea for driving in snow , SLOW DOWN!! leave early to get to where you have to go. The people that bitch about the snow, ice and poor conditions of the roads need to remember its winter out. We as a people have become so dependent on the goverment to do things for us that we cant function. So if you can't handle the snow...... Florida awaits.

And no there are no politicians that I know of around here that could have made the call and got the job done

TIPS & CLUES

Here's one to add --

"Use an inexpensive brush/scraper to clean the snow from your car before you drive it. Clean all the windows, not just a 4" x 6" slit right in front of the driver, and clean the rear-view mirrors.

"That way, you'll be able to see."

Nothing like a rolling igloo with the headlights glowing dimly through the snow-pack.

Idiots.

Calling BS on this one! In fact, main streets on the far northwest side have so salted to the point that any large trucks or buses kick up a cloud of salt so thick that pedestrians are covering their faces to prevent choking in the dust left in their wake. I look for bandanas to come into style much like the cowboys used to prevent choking on trail dust.

My OEMC pal WC bob D. says all transmissions are held for 30 unless a HOLD is requested.

Also, he intimated that red light camera transgressions can be digitally manipulated to place the "target" vehicle in the crosswalk while the traffic control signal is displaying red.

A disclaimer is made that the "photographic evidence" sent to violators and the video found on the website, is not permissable as evidence in a court of law.

Remember: a hearing with an administrative officer is not a hearing in a court of law.

As the snow was piling up yesterday, there was a traffic crash at 10500 S. Spaulding. Two 20 year old female St.Xavier students were t-boned by the other car. No injuries, thankfully. The striking vehicle attempted to stop but slid on the thick snow that was on the street. Here's the kicker!! Both drivers' vision was obstructed by something. Can you guess what??? It was a City of Chicago snow plow truck!! It was parked at 10501 S. Spaulding on a fire hydrant with no occupants! Both drivers said they couldn't see the other until it was too late because of the truck parked on the corner. To add insult to injury, as the crash victims were waiting for the paper car, the Streets and San guy came out of his house, jumped in the truck and took off. Is that a kick in the a.s.s. or what?!! hahaha f**kin city workers.

Put all the snow that the fireman plows off of your street onto the city inspectors driveway and front porch when he is at home, but sleeping. That way he cannot get out to ticket the nice fireman that is using his own truck and plow to clear your street. I checked and there is nothing in the books about placing snow on a city inspectors driveway or porch.

Naw, it's OK. They're straight. They have

"PiCK mEtAL"

painted on the side, as per ordinance.

The one dangling headlight is operable, and there is a wad of crumpled paper firmly wedged into the gas filler pipe, as required.

I wonder if they picked up the garbage in NYC yet. There was six feet of it bagged up on top of six feet of snow the last time I looked.

I think the Honduran driving schools are a little vague on CHAPTER 17 -- ARCTIC CONDITIONS.

Oh, you'll think it's funny alright when one of them comes slewing toward you, and you'll catch by the flash of light that they're text-messaging in there even though they can't see anything at all around them. More snow sifting down off the foot-thick accumulation on the roof to fog out the driver.

It's too weird.

Glad to make your day go a little faster. Be safe -- especially from these.

I laughed because of how it was described 'rolling igloo'. I still think that term is funny, as I can envision it.

Folks who can't take 5min to brush all the snow off their car are lazy jerks and of course I wouldn't want to see one come slewing at me. But thanks for your well wishes :)

Yeah, I swear to God, one of today's great big SUVs, made even bigger by a foot-thick coat of sticking snow, and all they did was to scrape a little vision slit like on a tank, and go driving.

It was like something that got loose from the Russian Front. Guys yelling "Panzerangriff!" and fleeing in terror as the thing advances...you'd sure better get out of the way because you know they can't see anything.

That, and those headlights glowing dim amber underneath it all.

*

Seen it before, will undoubtedly see it again.
