Crash Injures Two Cops
A young father of nine was killed early today when the car he was driving collided with a police SUV responding to a call on the South Side, Chicago police said.
Shawn Garrett, 25, of Chicago, was pronounced dead about 2:50 a.m. at Stroger Hospital.
Police said two officers were traveling southbound in an SUV with its emergency signals activated about 2 a.m. on South Indiana Avenue. According to police, Garrett's car ran a red light while eastbound on East 69th Street and collided with the police car before crashing into a pole. Both officers were treated and released, but two passengers in Garrett's car were taken to different hospitals in critical condition, police said.
Runs a red light and gets clipped by officers responding to an emergency call?

If you are in your late 40's or 50's and were planning on using the pension as the means of supporting yourself, it's too late to start investing enough money to survive through retirement. We deserve pension benefits based on the terms that were promised to us. Who knows what this guy has in mind as to what a "deserving" pension is. Is it 60%? 50%? 40%? City workers and their families need to express their disapproval on election day by voting for a different candidate. I realize that it's hard enough for us to agree on a lunch location, but we really need to make sure we are registered to vote and be heard.

I read the comments, aside from many of them being illiterates, the level of hatred for CPD is quite high in this sample. I must be doing something wrong, I work on the north side and am not getting all of my beauty rest at least one of the posters said I get. I always love when someone who either doesn't have a job at all or has a job that is nothing like yours begins to lecture about how much you do or how you do it. At least a handful of people spport us and are willing to wait until the facts about the incident are reported.

If you are relying only on the pension and have not made any other investments then you have serious problems. Most young officers today have either deferred comp or a 401 plan. The pension fund is in bad shape. All of the candidtaes realize that changes are necessary. Daley raped the fund and we are stuck with the bill.

Non-cop here. I read the comments in the article as well, and while they do show an astounding level of ignorance and anit-police sentiment, I don't think you should read too much into them. Most of them were posted between 7 am and 5 pm--in other words, during the work day, when normal, law-abiding folks are at work, earning money to support their families. In other words, the people most likely to be supportive of the police aren't sitting around a computer all afternoon spewing idiotic statements. While there's a case to be made that we (meaning the productive taxpayers) should make more of an effort to publicly support law enforcement, the fact that the shitheads seem to outnumber us on article comments like this isn't indicative of much beyond too much time on their hands, functional illiteracy and a surprising amount of access to computers.

Found out today that Streets and Sanitation snow removal is up to their old tricks again. Remember last year when Sgt. Haymaker was killed in a traffic accident and there was some blame about Streets and Sanitation being ordered to stop salting. Well, today's snow response had the same order given. There was an order given about 2 hours ago to stop salting. Proves even more that the city does not care about safety, only the bottom dollar. What ever happened to the investigation into Sgt. Haymaker's death? chirp....chirp.
Looks like another 'Father of the year' posthumus award coming soon.

Here's where a big chunk of our tax dollars go. A while back we arrested a guy that was 20 years old. He had 15 kids by 14 girls. He was the ultimate baby daddy. I did some research in his story and he was NOT lying. He got checks from the government and so did the baby's mama's. ALL COURTESY OF THE GOOD OLE U.S.GOVERNMENT. I have been in the deferred comp program since day one, and have been near maxed out for the past few years. I still have quite a few years to go before retirement, but I get the impression that a lot of the older coppers are relying on the pension alone to get them trough retirement based on conversations. I have been telling guys for the past three or four years that the terms of our pension will look considerably different when we retire from what it is now.
Glad that the Officers are ok. It should be an intersting scene at the wake if all the baby mama's show up at the same time.

Dallas Police must answer “race question” before pulling offenders over
The Dallas Police Department is now requiring officers to answer a question on the traffic ticket that reads “Race known prior to stop?” The patrol officer has to check yes or no when he stops the traffic violator.

I can't support Rahm Emanuel. I saw on the news today that no other than "RayRay" Hamilton was providing 'security' for Rahm on today's newscast.
If RayRay is involved in Rahm's campaign, then you can bet your ass that so is 3M, and there is just no way I can support anyone for Mayor who will keep that short, ignorant asshole within the upper ranks of our Dept., which I am sure Emanuel will do. He might even move 3M up the chain, and as bad as Masters has been thus far, he could do far more damage as an Asst. Supt., or higher (and I don't even want to think about it). So I want to thank you RayRay, you've made my decision come 22 Feb a whole lot easier. I'll be voting for Chico.

The city council has recently enacted new rules that lengthen the time in service before retirement, upped the contributions to the shaky retirement fund, and reduced the cost-of-living adjustments. The unions have responded by filing a lawsuit that claims the city has acted illegally, plus accusing the city of purposely underfunding the pension system.

That's easy; NO. I never stopped a car for a traffic violation because of the driver's race; I stopped them because I saw a vehicle committing a traffic violation.
Now, if it was a hot call, or the passengers in a car threw something from the car, or threw up gang signs from the car... well, yeah, I knew the race before the stop. But the stop was no longer a TRAFFIC stop at that point.

Instead of getting angry why don't you cut your expenses and save money for your future? Trust me, I was in the same situation and my wife, myself, my brother and sister in law sat down and ran through all of our expenses. We wasted a lot of money on stupid stuff like: cell phones that costs us $90 per month, brand new cars which were replaced with two used cars, eating out 4 times a month, and spending money everyday on stuff like candy bars, coffee, frapucinnos, take out food from Chipotle, McDonalds, etc....
Trust me, look at your expenses and cut out all of the unnecessary waste. Ask yourself, do you and your wife really need a brand new Iphone? Do you really need a new car?

$25 a check isnt going to far to preare you for retirement. Whats that $50 a month $600 a year, 10 years $6,000 if you work and save for 20 years you will have $12,000 plus some interest Wow in 20 years you will have close to $15,000
That should replace or supplement a pension
C'mon guys and gals! Cut the human hormone some slack will ya! He wanted to get them out of the way early! So he could enjoy his senior years being visited by his 81 grandchildren.

OFF TOPIC: The attached clip will piss off more than just the cops. Police Officers in Chicago have some discretion when issuing a ticket. But these civilian goofs are slopppy, and unprofessional.

I am glad the civilians are writing most of these tickets instead of police.
Police used to have to jaw jack with citizens and my blood pressure would go up dealing with the ignorant average citizen.
Now I stay calm and smiling and let these lime green idiots bear the brunt of citizens' loathing and disgust. It is always a good laugh when one of these lime greenies calls for an assist as they are getting their ass kicked.
When I show up to those I invariably take the citizen's side. The police become heroes once again and I have been making Daley look bad for years. I always blame everything wrong with this city on him. Citizens love it.
Trust me, look at your expenses and cut out all of the unnecessary waste. Ask yourself, do you and your wife really need a brand new Iphone? Do you really need a new car?

No, A-hole. I can spare that, and more, but in reality with 23 years on the job, the amount I can defer between now and retirement isn't shit when I depended upon being paid what I was promised.
Smug motherfucker. I hope you realize the hyperinflation that will occur with the current "quantitative easing" programs is going to make your deferred worth about 5 cents on the dollar 10 years from now.

The poster is trying to advise you to save to help YOURSELF. I personally don't care if you save or not, but sound advice from someone with more fiscal responsibility should not be treated with such disdain. I hope our pensions sustain all of us, but I will be somewhat prepared for a shortfall!
I personally know many coppers that insist on brand new expensive cars every two years, Bourbon street visits once a week, Vegas trips, etc.... That is your business, but if you want advice on how to prepare for retirement, then listen to someone with experience and know how! Your children do not need everything they ask for. It is unbelievable what these kids think are REQUIREMENTS of life, while their parents can't meet the daily bills, let alone save for retirement. Smarten up or get lost in the dust!!! Your choice!!! Hopefully your spoiled children will pick up the shortfall when grown, since you gave up your retirement savings to spoil them. Highly doubtful though!
Good luck to you! I will drive my cars for ten years and request that my kids understand that they CAN'T have everything in life. Maybe I will be in a position to help them with my extra retirement savings, when they have children. I think then, they will be glad that they didn't have PS3 or XBox 360, or an IPhone when they were 12.
