Another Cop Attacked

Though from the reports, it looks like a drunk that got tossed out of a bar just happened to pick on someone who was an off-duty cop:
  • A south suburban man was charged with trying to grab away a pistol from the hands of an off-duty Chicago police officer in the Wrigleyville neighborhood over the weekend.

The officer's Glock 21SF pistol fired during the struggle, but no one was struck, police said.

William Miles, 50, of the 300 block of University Avenue in Glenwood, was charged with one count of attempting to disarm a police officer, police said.

  • Miles had been put out of a nearby business and began shouting at the passing off-duty officer without any provocation, police spokesman Veejay Zala said.

The altercation between the two escalated when Miles tried reaching into the cop's jacket, leading the officer to announce his office and pull his weapon, according to Zala and court records.

When the victim identified himself as a police officer, Miles replied, "I don't care if you're (expletive) police, I'll ice your (expletive)," court records said.

The Officer suffered minor injuries.

UPDATE: Seems the altar boy has quite the rap sheet - 131 arrests. And to the unpublished moron, the cop was just walking down the street when the bar bounces tossed jagoff from the building. Jagoff proceeded to attack the first passer by since the bouncers had just handed him his lunch.

These mutts have no apparent fear of dying at the hands of The Police.

A pity that stinkin' thinkin' didn't result in this dog being administered several .45 caliber breath mints...

Well looking at the photo and the age of the offender makes me think this guy may be a head case who was drinking.

Perhaps just a regular ole belligerent drunk.

In any case I'm glad no weapon was fired and the officer went home alive and apparently in decent shape.

I think it's probably one of those gov't leaches that hang out on clark street begging for money from the yuppies that did this. That's my guess anyway. They either sit there or walk up and down the bar stretch beggin for money and these stupid fuckin yuppies give them money, making them feel all warm and fuzzy inside, and not realizing that is why these fucks are there every single night. They make their money begging then go over to the liquor store and get wasted. I work there, see it every night. They usually don't cause much of a stir but every one of them that i've ran have wicked rap sheets. They are not good hearted people that are just down on their luck. They are career assholes just looking for the right opportunity.

This piece of shit is a regular in the wrigley area. I know for many a lot of these arrests are bullshit (panhandling, etc.)... But this mutt will walk up behind peeople using the ATM, stop people from walking down the sidewalk and basically forcing them to give him money. I know this is not the crime of the century, but if this is your mom, sister, wife, you don't want these scumbags anywhere around, especially if you are going out to enjoy yourself. But the downtown area, Wrigley, etc. are flooded with this shit and this time he walked into to one of us and good thing the officer is OK.

Snatch-proof off duty holsters are available. Safariland makes them with the same retentions as the duty versions, except with pancake style belt slots. Bianchi has them too, a bit different design. Shitheads will try anything these days.

I will never carry pepper spray off-duty. Cuffs and extra magazine with the weapon, definitely, but never pepper spray. I've seen that stuff disable far more police than low lifes. And remember what it caused when it was used in the E2 nightclub. I'd much rather see us allowed to carry a small, personal taser of our own off duty, if we're going to carry a 'non-lethal resistance prevention device.'

R.I.P. Officer, As it was explained to us, the deceased officer was in plain clothes and pulled his weapon. The responding officers when they arrived saw someone dressed as like a gangbanger holding a gun at a fight.

They did not know he was the police.

The lesson here is if you are new to a district, or new anywhere, get to know all the plain clothes people working. Walk in and introduce yourself in the Tact Office. If you are in plain clothes and confronted by the police in a situation, don't be secretive about it. Let 'em know you're on their team right away. Don't let the confrontation get out of hand.

Stay safe, uniform, plain clothes or buck naked.

I was there. The offender was thrown to the ground by a bouncer and when he got up he swung at the first person he saw, the off duty officer , who was just walking by. If you don't carry when you're off duty you're putting yourself at risk. I've got 20 years on and in my first year I didn't think I needed to carry until one night at a Nightclub someone I didn't recognize said "Hello officer ". I asked him where I knew him from and he said "You locked up a friend of mine and I don't like how you treated him." I stated that if I locked him up he deserved to . This was someone who was watching me work and I had no idea who he was. And of things would have gotten ugly, I was without my weapon. After that I always carry off duty. It could save you or a loved ones life.

What was the old saying? "One seldom needs a revolver, but, when one does, one needs it very badly."

I've seen some of the aggressive panhandler acts down there. One character dressed in a getup, Carhartt overalls and a wrestler's belt over those, hard hat, and he's waving some dirty car part he found in the gutter at people, just need cash to get this part fixed and I'm on my way home to Tennessee, etc.

Watched him for a while, he went into a convenience store and I saw him bailing wads of cash out of the front of those coveralls and straightening them out on the counter. After he left, I went in and asked the clerk how much money he'd put across the counter. "Oh, about $400." A few cartons of name-brand cigarettes, some top-shelf expensive liquor, and a lot of lottery tickets.

There are needy people -- and this wasn't one of 'em.

In nearly 25 year of police work I've only had to draw my weapon twice outside a range. I didn't have to fire either time, but it saved my then young ass one time and others another time.

Both times off duty.

Always carry unless your planning to get shitfaced drunk.

As for why the cop didn't walk away I wasn't there so unless you were there STFU.

I'm glad he got the idiot and I hope said idiot spends some time as a guest of the state. Maybe he will learn something. Maybe not. In any case he will at least be temporarily not trying to harm people.

If the story is true and some of the comments here are true then this guy is a menace to society and sobriety.

I agree!
My mother (61) and her sister (59) came to visit us last summer. The three of us were seriously accosted by a homeless person in River North. Thankfully, two male passersby stopped to help us and even more thankfully, two uniformed policemen were right around the corner and grabbed him, but yes. They aren't coming back to Chicago to visit me and insist that it's unsafe for me to live here as a single woman.

Thanks to the Chicago PD officers who helped her, but no thanks to the politicians who allow this sort of thing to go on.

Victimhood suits you well. Why don't you just speak for yourself and not carry off duty.

There is no way in hell you can possibly be The Police and say
this deluded-assed, mad rabbit shit.

As is universally held and understood in L/E circles... We would rather have it (and a couple of reloads) and not need it, than to need the fuck out of it and ain't got it.

CARRY YOUR SHIT!

"Pretty please" won't help you during an encounter with a Morlock intent on feeding or an adult 10 year old wigging out because mommy came into his basement lair and disconnected his play station...

If you are the Police, please resign. Maybe you wouldnt be saying the same thing if someone had just killed your wife or daughter. I dont care where you live or where you are going, you should always carry your gun. Do you honestly think crime only occurs in the ghetto.Criminals will attack when you are with your wife and family, in hopes that your concern for your family will prompt you to do what they say. What happens when you comply and they shoot your pregnant wife, what then. Is that what it will take for you to realize that maybe you should have carried your gun. Please continue to live in your world, but do the rest of us a big favor and resign. I feel sorry for this officer and any other officer who has to draw their weapon. Your first concern should be to disable the threat, instead we are worried about the consequences that may be dolled out by the department. God bless you all. Glad your okay, Chip

I posted the original comment. I should probably rephrase a bit:

Outside some warrants early in my career I only drew my weapon twice.

Now part of that is luck and part of that is being one of those guys who tests well and got promoted, but still drawing your weapon "thousands of times".?

Are you Baghdad PD?

In a 30 year career you'll work fewer than 7000 days on the street. Are you saying you pull your weapon twice a month?

I came on in 85 and worked the west side for a few years and while it was crazy it wasn't that crazy.

Maybe in the SCC language I'm more of a house mouse than I care to admit. Squeak, squeak.

Maybe I'm like one of those mythical CFD members who always happens to be off when the shit goes down.

It can't be luck because I've been married and divorced twice. No luck there.

Anyway stay safe and back to the original topic I'm glad the off duty cop grabbed this guy.

In police work you are going to have to pull your gun more than twice a month, if you value your life. If you would like to keep your head up your ass and wait for dude to get the jump on you then you don't pull your gun out. Dude doesn't show your hands, your gun comes out. Burglary in progress, open door, looking for armed robber, etc. your gun is out. The detachment of the as you say "house mouse" to the street police is unreal.
