Burke Security
The Better Government Association filed a lawsuit Wednesday against the Chicago Police Department alleging that the agency wrongfully denied the nonprofit's Freedom of Information Act request for records related to Ald. Edward Burke's security detail.
The organization filed the FOIA request in August, requesting the names of the officers assigned to Burke and their titles, salaries, time sheets, reports and expenses. In a September response, the police department called the request "unduly burdensome."
On Nov. 4, 2010, the Better Government Association sent a revised request to the Chicago Police Department, asking for the total amount that the agency spent on Burke's security detail in 2009, the total number of officers assigned to Burke in 2009, and the rank and security of all of those officers. Burke represents the 14th ward.
The agency denied the request on Nov. 15, 2010, asserting that the requested disclosures "would defeat the purpose of the security by providing potential threats with information that could then be used to subvert the Department's efforts to effectively provide protection."
The Chicago Police Department also said in its letter to the Better Government Association that it does not keep expense or travel records related to the security detail and referred the group to the alderman's office for that information.

Well we have tried on several occasions to let someone or anyone know what goes on on the mayors detail, but nobody of any importance cares. And for sure not the media. His three grown kids each have a police officer assigned to them everyday. His butler/admin. Asst., you know the one that packs his bags and the wides bags and undies has a driver and his driver drives the butlers grown son to his job and the dentist. What else do you want to know? The problem is not the guys assigned to the detail but the butler who runs everything...now there is a waste of money!
Those BGA guys will only play nice for so long, then they'll file suit to get the info.
And it's about time.
Since THE READER is the only responsible newspaper in Chicago anymore perhaps the BGA could place a full-page ad with the letters sent and the responses so all the tax-payers can see how their dollars are spent. -at least 6 P.O.s at about $90,000.00 a year (then that generous overtime that builds up so quickly)
-a car for each, always new (can't have the most important man in the City driving something the Rank and File drive, can we?)
-throw in the misc expenses and you are at a million a year to squire his ego around for one year.
I am sure this is a LOW estimate. Add up the years we have been doing it and you will want to throw up.
The next thing the BGA should look at is the real estate tax that Burke pays on his new fortress on 51st. Cook County states that real estate taxes on new construction is 2% of value. Burke paysless then 1/2 that.
Let Burke use the "millions" of dollars in his "war chest" and pay for his own security!! Ridiculous !!
Maybe alderman rice's indictment will come soon

That new 2% increase in individual state income tax will more than wipe out the $400 dollar "Make Work Pay" tax credits over the last two years.

Do the math.
A 2% state tax increase is the same as a one week furlough with no pay based on a years wages.
For a person making $75K we're talking $1,500 to bail out the politicians spending on things like security details that we can not afford.
Yeah I know that's state and we're talking city and county expenses. Nevertheless wait until they get done with the property taxes and tell me about it.
What a crock of bullshit that the department claims they don't keep records of burke's cpd detail's expenses. The detail still works for and get paid by the chicago police department, including overtime and reimbursement for travel expenses.
Keep it up BGA and Fran Spielman and any other reporter interested. There is definitely records and paperwork and forms that must be completed and submitted by the detail through the chain of command in cpd for all expenses.
And look into who is paying for the always new cars that the detail drives 24 hours a day...
And BGA and Fran Spielman, why don't you follow and film Burke and his detail for about a month or two. And the mayor too.

many years back there was a guy name of John Sammarco whose family owned a limo business and this guy didn't want to wait in the limo lines for customers so he appraoches ed burke and his family as they were walking out of the terminal and trys to get them to rent his limo, burke starts a big argument with the guy and calls the airport police, and makes a report, then goes so far as get a warrant for disorderly conduct on this guy and the guys gets grabbed a few weeks later. Honest story, if you don't believe it run the name John Sammarco, should be about 50 yrs old now, this took place in the early 90's.
No money for the pension fund because short shanks and others have to pretend that they're important and need a huge security force.

The state is about to raise personal income taxes to over 5%, more than a 66% increase. That increase amounts to a loss of one weeks pay and we can't afford it.
The state is about to raise corporate business taxes from 4.8 percent to 8.4 percent..a 75% increase. We can't afford that either.
You're about to send property taxes through the roof. We cant afford that either.

Or how about the Flashing Police Blue Light Crime Prevention camera that was erected in front of Burke's Mansion? Where is the crime data that justifies this camera? (there was never any) In addition to all his bodyguards, who are the police officers manning this camera around the clock? He had even had no parking/tow zone signs erected on his side of the street. He turned his two way residential street into a one-way street to prevent less traffic on his his block. How inconsiderate is that to the long standing residents who were there before him? Must be nice to have all these unnecessary resources at your fingertips. Free bees compliments of taxpayers.

There's a story behind that Wisconsin mansion, also. It's located on Powers Lake, just north of the state line and about 10 miles east of Lake Geneva. Several decades ago, Carson, Piree, Scott & Co. owned that property. They called it Honey Bear Farm and it was a tourist destination that included a petting zoo, a bakery, a clothing boutique and other small retail shops.
Long story short, Burke orchestrated some beneficial zoning changes for Carson's while he was head of the City Council's Zoning Committee. In exchange, Carson' closed Honey Bear Farm and "sold" it to Burke for like $1 or something like that. He has sold off a dozen or so lots around his house for BIG $$$ over the years but still owns the mansion.
Those BGA guys will only play nice for so long, then they'll file suit to get the info.
