Where's the Connection?

  • Taste of Chicago patrons would pay a $20 admission fee—and up to $65-a-head for a music stage that draws the biggest-name talent—if City Hall accepts the only bid it got to take over lakefront festivals.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported last month that Chicago lost $7 million on Taste and six other lakefront festivals over the last three years, prompting City Hall to allow private operators vying to take over the events to sell naming rights and charge admission fees.

As it turned out, there was no competition.

The city received only one bid--from Celebrate Chicago LLC, a heavy-hitting joint-venture comprised of the Illinois Restaurant Association and two of the biggest names in the production of live entertainment: Chicago-based JAM Productions and AEG Live.

Gee, that won't be a hotbed of connected politicos and shady Outfit characters. Wait until the list of officers or investors of this company are revealed. We're betting those will be the movers and shakers of the next 25 years of Chicago politics. The head of one company is already one of Shortshanks' former Chiefs of Staff.

Chico Picks Up Chicago’s Latino Cops’ Endorsement

http://www.hispanicallyspeakingnews.com/has-oido/details/chico-picks-up-chicagos-latino-cops-endorsement/3889/

Mayoral hopeful, Gery Chico picked up an endorsement this week from yhr Latin American Police Association (LAPA) and the Mexican American Police Organization (MAPO).

LAPA President Michael Chuchro said, “We are supporting Gery because he best reflects the value of Chicago’s law enforcement community, “ adding that, “He will be a great mayor and we will do whatever we can to get him elected.”

Both Rahm Emanuel and Miquel Del Valle looked to pick up LAPA’s endorsement, but considering Chico was once named their “Person of the Year,” the organization’s decision is not that surprising.

MAPO President Sergio Flores said, “ Gery’s experience tackling some of the city’s toughest challenges and succeeding against all odds, make him the best suited to be our next mayor.”

Hey SCC...I work at the credit union on Washington. For the past couple of business days there have been some VIPs (atleast so they think) in suits and guns running around here with our bosses. The hub bub has ceased so I decided to start sniffing. Apparently there was a "breach of security" at one of your west side police stations that the suits were referring to as a "real cause of concern". They were really laying it on thick about needing cooperation from the credit union. Our bosses resisted initially, but eventually after checking with the legalese, decided to let the suits get their paws on what they were out for. I kept digging and found out what they were after was the digital video feed from one of our ATMs in the lobby of the 11th district. Since those ATMs are relatively new, they actually have impeccable images. Problem is they run on a 30 day loop...meaning if nothing happens for a month, the images are erased. So this "investigation" was time sensitive, hence the rudeness! But apparently the suits got whatever it is they were looking for. They left after making a few uploads. Im sure it has something to do with the recent photos taken, but my god! Does this department not have better things to do, bigger fish to fry than some copper having a good time at Jfled's expense? Take a joke, man!

Lots to chew on here SCC. Like which events lost how much money and better yet....why? While they are blaming the economy I know what added to the deficit....PARKING MONEY!! That's right, I said parking money. Why you ask? Because the City has to pay 24-7 for every meter in the city that they put a no parking sign on. Last time I checked Columbus Dr. had a lot of meters on it.
Next, what expense is there to the City for the taste? Police, fire, streets and san, porta potties, the generators that are rented, and the Fireworks. I'm not sure who picks up the tab for the entertainment. Is it the City or the "sponsor" for that day? Now, each tent has to cough up money I'm sure for the spot, plus they get money from ticket sales.

Now if they are looking for a bidder to run the events why not try charging admission and see how the numbers play out BEFORE selling the right to someone else and finding out that they gave away potentially huge profits like the parking meter fiasco? Is it so Daley can provide another income to cronies of his for 99 years on this too?

Personally I'm glad they want to start charging, maybe they can go back to having fireworks on the 3rd and the riff-raff will stay home. I guarantee dude will not pay $65.00 a head to go see
lil jeezy or whatever other crap they brought in last year.
Then again the Revrunds will complain it's unfair and the only ones that will have to fork over money for bands will be the decent people.

This city is following the same path of Detroit. Detroit tried to tax, tax, tax, tax and tax their way out of a recession and see what happened to them? While other cities are warming up to the idea of becoming business friendly Chicago is doing the opposite. My brother works for HSBC and one of their wealthy clients from Honk Kong tried to relocate his business and after three hours his lawyers told him to find a more business friendly city and state to open up his business in.

Anyone who thinks that by charging a $20 admission fee, it will keep the riff raffs out, you need to get your head examined. The gang bangers and dope dealers make easy money. Spending that kind of money won't set them back. Now, what about the typical average working man with two kids? Do you honestly mean to tell me that he will pay $80 just to get into the Taste of Chicago? And then once he gets in, he will pay for overpriced food? I don't think so.

You know what's missing?

How much are people going to pay to park -- over five dollars an hour right?

So the parking will cost more than the show if you make a day of it.

...and you'll be lucky if United Road Towing, (the cities auto pound operator) and the Department of Streets and Sans doesn't snatch your car and hold it for ransom on some made-up violation. Damaging it in the process and then laughing in your face and refusing to pay.

NO THANKS. There are many other fest that are better and without the cities extortion.

Perhaps entrepreneurs, i.e., people who have initiative, determination, aggressiveness, business savvy, etc. also have 'connections.' Question is: What came first? Are they 'connected' because they know how to get things done? Or did their connections pave an easy path for them?

In this case, with no other companies bidding for the Taste, I fail to see the rational of looking in shadows. There seem to be no other takers willing to deal with the problems of making this a profitable venture. There seems to be no advantage to 'connections' because there is no competition.

OT--

Obama Planning To Bring In William Daley As White House Chief Of Staff, Replacing Emanuel

"In an obvious effort to broaden the representation of Chicagoans and former Clinton aides in his administration, President Obama has reportedly begun talks to bring William Daley into the White House as a top assistant, possibly even as chief of staff.

"Obama's first chief of staff was Rahm Emanuel, a former House member from Chicago's North Side who has returned to Chicago to become mayor.

"He can do this because Richard M. Daley, the brother of William Daley, has decided to retire this winter from his City Hall political throne where he's run the Windy City's vaunted Democratic machine for a generation, or about as long as Richard J. Daley, the father of Richard M. and William.

"Neither of the Richard Daleys nor William Daley should be confused with Valerie Jarrett, who was City Hall chief of staff for Richard M. and once hired Michelle Robinson as an aide.

"Robinson went on to become Michelle Obama and then first lady of the United States and hired her Chicago friend and fundraiser Desiree Rogers as social secretary before leading Chicago's delegation to Copenhagen to not capture the 2016 Olympics..."

Off Topic but important...

The First Law Enforcement Officer killed in the Line of Duty this year is in Ohio, Clark County Sheriff's Deputy Suzanne Hopper.

Deputy Hopper died from a shotgun blast from a mentally derange assailant who also shot at police back in 2001. The assailant died in a shootout with officers from several agencies in a trailer park where he lived.

Please watch and learn from the following video.

http://www.policemag.com/Videos/Channel/SWAT/2011/01/Fierce-Gun-Battle-at-Ohio-Trailer-Park.aspx

Observations: The officers involved rush in, (as opposed to the Joseph Airhardt incident) at the time this may have been thought to be a rescue attempt. The officers seen firing are completely exposed and fail to get any cover or concealment while exchanging gunfire with the offender who can be seen in shadow in the window of the Airstream trailer. Always look and go for cover.

Stay safe, God Bless Deputy Hopper and her family.

In his ruling, Judge Mark J. He also said that "having a place to sleep" is not a "touchstone of continued residence."

Spending that kind of money won't set them back. Now, what about the typical average working man with two kids? Do you honestly mean to tell me that he will pay $80 just to get into the Taste of Chicago? And then once he gets in, he will pay for overpriced food? I don't think so.

Ditto.

I can't believe how many people think a $20 cover charge will keep out the riff-raff.

I can only comment on the Latino dance clubs, a $20 cover is low.

I am guesing that the Westside/Southside clubs have the same pricing.

The prices will keep out the working families, not the freeloaders.

Just make sure you leave that apartment when you head to work & return to it afterwards. Otherwise, YOU'RE HISTORY.

Fuck Henny Penny. She better just shut her crazy ass up. Police Chiefs all over the entire country, probably the world, are shaking their heads in "Shock and Awe" at the fact that this lunatic is allowed to take the reins of one of the busiest, most dangerous districts in the city. Our phoney police supt is too busy giving BS sound bites to pay attention to the madness he's supposed to be supervising. There isn't a blog around she and he aren't featured on.

Making people pay might be a good idea. It would keep the riff-raff away. None of those people are going to pay $25 to get in.

1/04/2011 07:27:00 AM

RIGHT!

And you don't think they'll be giving away 'complimentary' admission tickets? 1000's of freebees will be distributed from Operation Push and the west side Revruns and the Aldermen... hell, they'll probably be able to pick up a pair with their link card or with every free government phone they sign up for.

Here's a crazy idea. The city still runs the event and they charge an entrance fee. They could also sell the naming rights. After privatizing the parking meters, and messing that up, you would think Daley would have learned.

1/04/2011 04:20:00 PM

Of course he learned. Why do you think he's doing it? More Daley Crime Family members will be getting filthy rich off the taxpayers and he'll be getting kickbacks well into his golden years.

He learned, alright ! ! !

Could someone shine some light on this for me please?

OT question: Can any recent hires or striker fire guys/gals answer me this.

Are we allowed to carry the Springfield Xd in two tone? I like the stainless slide and know we were allowed to with the Sigs.

Also, what are our options with handgun sights? I know night sights are allowed. What about anything else other than stock? Thanks in advance.

Read the order or go to the range and ask.

If you have never enjoyed Summerfest in Milwaukee you should drive up and check it out. One thing you will not see inside the grounds is police, there are plenty when the grounds close but nothing like the Chicago PD presence at the taste. They charge $12 to get in and that is just general admission, it includes around 10 music stages with decent acts such as Goo Goo Dolls later in the evening. You pay for everything else, food, drink and attractions. It has a headlining act each day such as Tom Petty or Toby Keith at its amphitheater which range in price from $50-$250 depending on seat location and includes entry into grounds. The problem with the taste is the size, Summerfest grounds are enormous but it does get crowded later in the evening. There are very few knuckle-heads that you have to deal with and no problems with inner-city youths like the Taste. I stay a weekend in Milwaukee every year and spend around $750 and have a great time. They have a great casino "in the city" that I generously donate a couple hundred dollars too every year as well.

The Taste could be great but the problem is the space they try to cram you in. For the admission price of $20 and they keep it exactly the same its going to be a failure. They need to make it twice the size for starters. Why not have it at Northerly Island?
They need to have 4 free stages with national acts and one headliner for each night it runs for this to work and no PC bullshit, hip-hop acts are out of the question...to many problems associated with these acts. Proven!!!

I like the admission rate becasue it will keep out the riff-raff and let normal families enjoy an evening in the shadows of downtown without fearing for their lives.

Illinois Supreme Court finds Millennium Park usage agreement to be non-taxable license

Alternative uses for exempt property has become a hot topic for many units of local government in recent months. Just before Christmas the Illinois Supreme Court issued a decision in Millennium Park Joint Venture v. Houlihan addressing one such alternative use of an exempt property. The decision upholds lower court findings that the operator of the Park Grill restaurant at Millennium Park does not have to pay property taxes on its use of the Chicago Park District property because its use is pursuant to a license agreement rather than a lease

Suit alleges police hold back info on alderman's protection

[...] On Nov. 4, 2010, the Better Government Association sent a revised request to the Chicago Police Department, asking for the total amount that the agency spent on Burke's security detail in 2009, the total number of officers assigned to Burke in 2009, and the rank and security of all of those officers. Burke represents the 14th ward.

[...] The Chicago Police Department also said in its letter to the Better Government Association that it does not keep expense or travel records related to the security detail and referred the group to the alderman's office for that information.
