Death Penalty on the Ropes
- The Illinois House voted narrowly to abolish the death penalty Thursday, marking the first time either legislative chamber has moved to end executions since the death penalty was reinstated in 1977. The measure passed 60-54 and now moves to Senate.
You just know Quinn couldn't bear to execute what could be a potential democratic voter.

Why not? Is anybody in the Illinois House being shot at? Are they on the frontlines like the police? They're not being affected by these savages in an up close and personal way like the police are. They don't care.
Just means the cook county courts will sentence them all to 40 hours of swap and court costs
Wasn't worth anything as administered in Illinois anyway. Going to sleep under anesthetic doesn't seem a very powerful deterrent.
Now if death were still by electric chair, then great, lets fire Old Sparky up.
Thank George Ryan, aka federal prisoner 16627-424.
I remember when a guy being executed by electrocution in Florida in 1997 had his head burst into flames as the juice was turned on.
Attorney General Bob Butterworth said the inmate's death would be a deterrent to crime.
''People who wish to commit murder, they better not do it in the state of Florida because we may have a problem with our electric chair,'' Mr. Butterworth said.
That was priceless. Now a painless drifting off to sleep is the way they dispatch prisoners in Florida too. What's to be afraid of?
Or Utah, in 1977 Gary Gilmore got the firing squad, the most humane in my opinion.
The death chamber at Tamms cries out for justice.
Make that last ride from Pontiac's death row to Tamms at least a weekly event.
I like Texas and Huntsville. Don't mess with Texas.
A month of porterhouse steaks to the Great Dane that captured rapist wannabe Larry Smith, 3700 S. Wells St. when he tossed a 14-year-old girl to the ground and pulled her pants down in 014. Woof-woof!
They said gun control would work, you know, keep guns away from criminals. They were wrong.
They said the death penalty would not be a deterrent. They are partially correct on this. The deterrent doesn't exist if you drag the punishment out for 20 or 30 years. Evidence doesn't get better with time, just fuzzier. Gives the oily lawyers some time to fudge the facts.
There are no Richard Kimballs on death row. Kill them all in a reasonable time and the deterrent will be there.
Please remember "wrongfully convicted" is a euphemism for "out on a technicality".
With the all the incompetance from police,States Attorny and judges, they need to abolish the death penalty.
Far TOO many mistakes are being made.
Yet another ball dropped by our current FOP... where were they? Don't you think representatives from the state's biggest FOP lodge should have been heard loud and clear during this?
ball droppers...
Love the Quinn comment SCC! What a friggin' mush Quinn is...

When "W" was governor of Texas some do-gooder asked him about innocent people on death row in Texas.
George responded, "There aren't any innocent people on death row in Texas."
Believe in the death penalty or not, it does wonders for recidivism.
100% cure rate.
I'm looking fo investors.
After that silly vote:

I'd have no problem with the death penalty if we had prosecutors who were concerned about truth.
Do you really want to give the Will County Prosecutor the power to kill someone?
Do you have any doubt that they would have tried to fry that Lynwood cop for murder on the flimsy evidence they had?
Theoretically, I have no problem with the death penalty. I'd like to take the guys involved in the murder of Officer Wortham out to the Forest Preserve for a little target practice. That piece of human excrement who took the baseball bats to those girls in Bucktown would be taken to Wrigley for some batting practice. Etc etc.
Give me prosecutors who are more interested in justice than in winning and scoring political points and I might revise my opinion on the reality of the death penalty.
The only who benefits from continuing the death penalty are the lawyers.
Pass the ban and commute those already sentenced should have their sentences commuted.
It will save the State money and will bring finality to the families of the victims.
Fuck.....Murderers and violent criminals get parole and probation in this state anyway.....Why not get rid of it?
My grandfather was born in 1888 and died in 1978. He lived in Kansas. He told me that when he was a young man, he was a deputy sherriff in Lucas Kansas and that they used to hang horse thieves. He said that people nowdays would frown on that but at least you only got caught stealing one horse. Things sure have changed. Gramps is probably rolling over in his grave over this crap.
The death penalty does not serve as a deterrent. That's proven.
If you like it because you want to be punitive, then that's a different story.
But know your position and the facts.

And just how is that proven ?

The Death Penalty certainly deters the convict who receives it.
The reason its deterrent effect has been diluted is the drawn out, delay-laden process before execution. (14 years on Death Row for Gacy--the poster boy for the DP)
Limiting frivolous appeals and certainty of execution would be a deterrent to others. But now we may never know ...

Can you be more specific sir? Perhaps you could cite some names or court docket numbers...I mean you did state, "TOO many..."
Did we ever have a death penalty? Gacy was the only one I remember. I won't even notice its gone. Total non-issue.
Just another no punishment for crimes in this shit state! Like this jag arrested 40+ times and still out on the streets hurting innocents to bad he was not KILLED! http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2011/01/great-dane-stops-sex-attack.html

LISTEN, to the ULTRA-LIBERAL who wrote this piece of bullshit. Ever hear of DNA Testing, it's a wonderful concept that has been around for decades, is 100% accurate, leading all verdicts to point the finger at and convict a REAL criminal. We victims need closure, LIFE in PRISON is not CLOSURE!! Sometimes you have to pay with your life to be SQUARE with the HOUSE.
The Russian gulag's have 100% unemployment.
Maybe we can help them out since we have WORK nobady wants done it their "backyard"?
They had two rules:
Don't ever piss off one of the guards!
JUST ASK AND THE GUARD WILL OPEN THE GATE SO YOU DON'T HAVE TO DIG OR CLIMB.
I would to see a VACANCY. sign at death row.
Good time we don't have no stinking good time?

Sure we had it, and we had an electric chair at Cook County Jail, back in the day. There were 67 executions there, the last in 1962.
OT - Watch out people. If this is a hint of what's on the horizon rather than simply an aberration from the left wing liberals, WE ARE IN TROUBLE!
Resisting Arrest: Not A Crime
"...Oregon effectively is now the only state that gives a suspect charged with Resisting Arrest (ORS 162.315) an affirmative defense that they were defending themselves against what they reasonably believed was an actual or imminent unlawful use of force by a police officer."

So, applying the impressive thinking skills of the yes voters for SB3539, it's ok to let the IL system convict innocent folks, and have them sit in jail for life, as long as the DP will never be an option?
Our state is in a financial crisis, there's a moratorium on the death penalty, so instead of, you know, taking steps to fund pensions, improve our Moody's rating, and foster job creation, these idiots are passing legislation that spits on murder victims and their families.
Fire every one of these criminal supporters, and that includes yes-voting Mike Madigan

Arizona congresswoman among 12 shot at Tucson grocery
By the CNN Wire Staff January 8, 2011 -- Updated 1953 GMT
(CNN) -- At least 12 people were shot at a Tucson grocery store on Saturday, and U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was among them, a Democratic party source told CNN.
There were conflicting reports about Giffords' condition. Giffords' press secretary said the congresswoman remained in surgery Saturday afternoon for her injuries, disputing an earlier report from a law enforcement source saying she had died.
The party source described the situation as "pretty serious."
At least 11 others were shot in the incident, which happened shortly after 10 a.m. MST, Pima County Sheriff's Department spokesman Jason Ogan said.
Giffords, 40, was holding a constituent meeting at the Safeway grocery store when the shooting occurred, according to a schedule posted on her website.
The Tucson Citizen newspaper reported that Giffords was shot in the head.
An FBI spokesman said the agency was sending agents to the scene, and two senior Obama administration officials said the White House is monitoring the situation. They said they believed that a congressional staffer may have been killed...
