Rebuilding the J-Fled Brand

  • Chicago Police Superintendent Jody Weis, suddenly a target of all the leading candidates in the city's mayoral race, likely has just a few months left as top cop in the nation's third-largest city. But he's confident he accomplished what he set out to do when he took the job nearly three years ago.

The embattled police chief defended his tenure last week in a year-end interview with The Associated Press, as two mayoral contenders were calling for his replacement. On Tuesday, two more candidates — former White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and City Clerk Miguel del Valle — said they too would not renew his contract when it expires in March.

Also among those lining up against Weis are some rank-and-file officers who've viewed the former FBI agent as an outsider. The chief's critics cite low morale in the police force and community frustration with both crime and the reduced number of officers deployed on the streets because of budget cuts.

But statistics wouldn't lie, would they?

And the superintendent wouldn't conspire to hide the results of a morale survey he commissioned after publicly stating he'd resign if he was the cause of low morale, would he?

And a string of politically connected embarrassments
  • like drugs and guns found in your #3 exempts condo;
  • a lying sexual harasser being denied employment elsewhere and being re-promoted over numerous objections (but then, birds of a feather and all that);
  • and not being able to appoint your own chief of staff but being saddled with another political pick who ran a complete end-around state firearm qualification processes
That wouldn't have anything to do with the perception that he isn't really in charge of jack shit?

That's laughable...

J-Fled is to the law enforcement community what Chrysler was to the automotive industry circa 1980.

Some might see this parallel as too generous. Others, not critical enough.

Regardless, my sincere apologies to all Mopar fans monitoring this blog.

Unlike the Chicago Sun-Times of April 6 and the Sunday New York Times of April 18th, the Associated Press totally neglected to cite the demoralizing lack of leadership manifested by J-Fled's COWARDICE last April 2nd in Englewood.

"GOTTA RUN!" (the other way-- from a still unsolved murder that just occurred less than 45 seconds away from him). He fled, the yellow-bellied coward abandoning officers going into harm's way.

Want a replay? Go to www.YouTube.com and search "WEIS" and "COWARD".

The mere fact that he was an "outsider" could have been a plus in this most politically corrupt major city in the nation. Instead, J-Fled fell in lockstep with "the Chicago Way": CLOUT--"the best and the brightest" be damned.

His legacy will be that of a clueless, lying coward with no integrity whatsoever. He couldn't "lead" a starving hound to a fresh side of beef. He is now in "full spin cycle" with any media who will listen to his delusions of grandeur.

Buh-bye, COWARD!

When you have a bad track record (no pun intended), you should have the leadership skills to understand that and move on. Basically - read the market! Read the feedback.

I think J-FLED would gain a shred (and I mean a SHRED) of respect if he just manned up and said, "We gave it our best shot here and for the betterment of all including the rank-and-file, the citizens and new administration, I think it is best for me to move on to accept different challenges."

"I tried to create a new atmosphere in Chicago and some of it was successful and some of it could be viewed as still being in need of improvement. I wish the best to my fellow administrators as well as the rank-and-file."

(And do this in a suit and NOT in any CPD uniform)

Even as hard-nosed as some of you are, I think you would say good-bye. (reluctantly, begrudgingly, reservedly - but you have to get back that CPD esprit de corps - we're the Best. We survived this maniac, let's more forward.)

The bigger step will be to unravel all the bad promotions and all the piss-poor pseudo-leaders in the upper echelons.

It is not just a matter getting rid of J-FLED, all the underlings - Masters, Bea, Henny Penny, etc. need to be pushed aside in order to cleanse the CPD.

This guy could have made his own credibilty on day one by simply strapping up a gun and vest and jumping into tac cars, actually riding with Officers on the street.
When you work with people and go in the alleys and ride on calls, people tend to remember that.
Jumping into 99 cars on mids and being the second set of eyes and ears....But no, that was too simple. He could have easily hopped from District to District, riding with and talking with Officers, but no....If it would have been me, you would have heard

I love the way the media keeps referring to the rank and files view of Weis as an "outsider" as though that is our only problem with him. I was hoping that with him being from outside of Chicago that he would implement some real reforms and get away from the cronyism and hackism that is the Chicago way. Under Weis it got worse, and not just that he proved himself to just as vindictive and small minded as any of the worse bosses in the CPD history. Good riddance to him, but realistically who ever comes in will never be able to fix what is wrong with this Dept.

You're giving credit to J-Fled for pistols, SWAT and assault rifles and for that you believe his tenure as boss has provided us with some measure of goodness?

Let me tell you something. There is far more to this job than guns and rarely used manpower. Your statement, in my opinion, is that of some gun nut and not a police officer concerned with the day to day welfare of his/her fellow officers.

It would be nice to know that your idea of leadership involves a little more than gunfire. If you haven't heard already, the fucking gangbangers don't appear to be afraid of our Glocks, SWAT Team or M-4's.

WHAT? I'll give you the carbine program, but that stemmed from "Da 'Limpiks" and security concerns.

Outside of that, SWAT was under Supt Cline, Dept Tobias when he was running S.O.S. and Lt "Manch" had the reigns when it went from HBT to a full time SWAT program.

Striker Fired weapons, not just the Glock, were under Supt Cline as well.

'Some of the exempts and patrol people are plotting what to do when he is unceremoniously kicked out. Who would go to his “retirement” party?

They, and frankly everybody I know hope that he doesn't do any further damage on his way out.

Some refer to him as, DEAD MAN WALKING.'

Word is, ticket sales for Danny Dugan's retirement party haven't been exactly flying out of the printer's office. I suspect that no one will probably even offer to throw Weis a "good luck, you're a fine fellow' party, unless it is initiated by the Aldermen.
And a lot of these exempt bums who did the hatchet work for Weis, 3M and Shanx should just go quietly.
No one really hates any of you, you're just not worth $50 or more to make sure that you're really gone!

He wasn't all that bad. Now you have Glocks, SWAT and carbines because of him. There were good things done for this dept.

First of all the carbines I could careless for they do not make u a better cop. Half the people that have those guns look like idiots cause they are to big for them and don't no how to use them mafers. Oh yeah he got cameras in the tahoes that are terrible for police work. Swat who gives a fuck about swat. Those goofs should be out on the street with us instead they train train and train. Swat is useless. We need them out on the street ESP with low man power we have now.

Weis had nothing to with swat starting. Swat became a full time team in 2005 and the glock was also approved before he got here.

1/06/2011 09:54:00 PM

Good thing for SWAT, but why is SWAT so huge a unit now. Maybe I missed something but I thought it was a small team of specialized officers, I counted 72 p.o. Transfers recently and a whopping 11 sgts transferred to SWAT. That's way over the number if po's transferred to the airport. What's the deal? Does this city need 100+ SWAT officers? What's going on!

Cowardice and good leadership are mutually exclusive.

Good riddance. If he had any honor, J-Fled would have resigned a couple of years ago. Daley is beyond hope. If da Mare said that the sun rises in the West, he would take his lie to the grave. DENY! DENY! DENY!

In what parallel world do you and J-Fled reside where it is not wrong to: Throw a police officer under your command into the Federal trick bag, having no regard for the fact that this same officer has already completed punishment for the crime and made his amends.

Remember the town hall meetings to allow feedback from officers? They promised to listen without repercussion. Bullshit. They punished several officers for speaking the truth. You have to define wrong. Is it wrong to appoint unqualified officers to exempt staff? How many officers are buried in call back for years without a hearing or determination of their case?

I laugh every time J-FLED says he is responsible for getting us X number of new cars. Is he kidding? Will he take credit for giving us buildings to work in next? How about paper to write on? Cells to house the dregs of humanity? It is just sad.

By the way, the Tahoes were the worst car choice since the Ford Faimonts. Thanks for saddling us with those boxes of crap.

Not sure how u r coming up with 100 + officers. I know it's fuzzy math but u said it yourself 72 officers + 11 sgts; 72 + 11 = 83 + 2 lts = 85. that's all the people assigned to the unit. Of those 85 only 60 officers are actually handling warrants and hbt jobs but we are short officers like everyone else we have about 40, of the 11 sgts only 9 are for warrants and hbt jobs, the other 2 are for WMD aka cbrne and negotiators. The remainder of the officers that I have not accounted for are assigned to WMD/ cbrne/ clan lab and the equipment maintenance crew oh and 2 to work the desk. And as far as being on the street, we are, I know I backed up officers on several occasions. I don't consider myself better than anyone else I work for the 1 and 16 and get paid the same as you do.
