Another Bad Decision
Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation Thursday to require online merchants with a physical presence in Illinois to collect and remit sales tax.
The controversial law, called the Main Street Fairness Act, means online retailers — including giant Amazon.com Inc. and Overstock.com Inc. — must collect sales taxes on purchases made by Illinois residents as long as the retailer has a physical presence in the state. The law is effective immediately.
The move is expected to have little effect on consumers’ online shopping habits, but deals a blow to small businesses that count the giant retailers as a major source of ad revenue.
Amazon and Overstock.com said they would avoid collecting sales tax by stopping their affiliation with Web site companies in Illinois that direct traffic to Amazon and Overstock. Under the new law, online retailers are deemed to have a presence in Illinois if they have a contract with an affiliate based in here.

So far it has cost EVERY STATE that has tried it. Increased unemployment and not a dime more in tax revenue.
CouponCabin.com has already announced they are moving to Indiana.
Lost your job?
Thank a Democrat
Mr. Potatohead. You are a genius. The welfare state needs more money to take care of the leeches.
Adios to thousands of jobs via the small company who rely heavily on the net for business and paychecks.
Once again, you've proven your IQ is below your shoe size Mr. Potatohead. Now go get Woody and Buzz and hide under the bed.
Keep voting Democratic you idiots.
Quinn and the other politicians stay up late at night thinking of ways to get business and citizens to leave Illinois. They need money to run entitlement programs for their constituents who don't work. So they screw us that do.
Saw on tv that CouponCabin, a coupon discount site, has decided to pull out of Chicago and move to Indiana over this.
The first of many, Mr. Millionare Quinn. The first of many.
I could never understand the logic that Chicago, Cook County or Illinois can collect revenue from residents who purchase outside the boundries of the tax collecting entity. I buy a car in Glen Ellyn and for some reason Chicago and Cook County seem to think they are owed taxes. Why? Neither government provided any service to that car dealership, i.e. roads, police, fire or water..nothing!! Let's carry the logic even further, I take my family on a trip to Disney in Florida where I can easily spend over $5000. does this mean Chicago, Cook County and Illinois are owed tax revenue? So far they havent reached there yet. I am so tired of being f'ing nickled and dimed to death in this shithole of a city, county and state.
Heh...
Governor jell-o will have the road cops at the borders stopping cars loaded with packages returning from out of state shopping excursions to extort people who are trying to save some hard earned money...
It's as if these rotten fuckers WANT Illinois to implode.
You CANNOT tax your way out of insolvency!
Cut ghetto give-away entitlements to the bone and pass concealed carry so decent, law abiding people can defend themselves when the catered to constituents and los ciudados santuarios "demonstrate" against the hard working captive tax payers to show their displeasure at being cut off from the sweet milk flowing from the now sore teat of government.
The violent tantrums like the proverbial unweaned, free-range, 6foot, 80inch wingspan, 250lb, no impulse control, nothing but fast-twitch fibers 21 year old still in diapers and kept locked in the basement and momma wants him out because he keeps biting her during feedings... "i want him out but y'all better not hurt him..."
Almost too God-awful ugly to imagine.
Nothing good will come of this...
Great Idea Moron Quin. When Cook County raised the tax on cigs to four dollars a pack the following year they collected 18 million dollars less on cigarrett tax and lost 10 million on fuel tax.I shop on line and save big bucks look at Amazon versus North Carolina the states loose every time its a federal law the on line retailers dont have to give the states your personal info on your purchases
Amazon.com, Endless.com, and SmallParts.com have already terminated their affiliate agreements with Illinois residents.
Coupon Cabin a company in Illinois is said to be moving to Indiana because of the recent tax changes.
dumb
The hilarious thing is, it takes *nothing* to move your affiliate operation to another state. A $25 PO Box in another state, change your address with the Amazon Partner Network and viola. Your entire operation has just shifted out of Illinois and into somewhere else with not much more than a few phone calls and a few mouse clicks.
Sincerely:
A Guy with 6 Amazon Affiliate Stores Who Is Not a "Wyoming Based Business".
Might have to start a drop box business on Indianapolis Blvd on the Indiana side.

I bought my last 2 cars in Wisconsin to avoid all the BS state, county and city taxes and city sticker, and registered them there to avoid the high Chicago auto insurance rates.
Most everyone I know does their shopping outside of the city and county to avoid the extra taxes they are trying to extort from us here, especially for big ticket items.
Why would this numb-nuts think that everyone will just give Illinois more of their hard earned $$$ just because this idiot signs a piece of paper saying to do it?
And, yes, how does he think he'll EVER be able to enforce it???
STUPID POLITICIANS!
My Internet business operates from a PO Box in Dyer IN. Anyone from Illinois who sells online should do the same.
I thought "Mr. Potato Head was an Irish slur. Being Irish, I always laugh when I hear it. After seeing Quinn on the news last night, it finally dawned on me: HE DOES LOOK LIKE MR. POTATOE HEAD! Too funny! Unfortunately his head is just as empty.
So far this year his decisions have all favored the criminals and cost the taxpayers. Think about that.
quinn , periwinkle , emanuel when will you stop taxing the honest working citizens and start taxing the illegal food vendors , coffee carts and vendors selling bikes , carpets and pictures in chicago and cook county
they have no business license and pay no city , county , state or
federal tax
i bet they all pay a street tax to some politician

Look fella, it's LOSE. Not LOOSE. (i.e., "the states lose" as opposed to something like "the brain cells in your head are loose.") I don't know how many times I've read posts on this blog from cops who don't know the difference. I can only imagine how linguistically challenged some case reports are written in this department. Truly embarrassing.
I parchased a car from a dealer in
Forest Park and later from one in
Schaumburg and each time I was
charged that Chicago tax.
It's called a "use" fee and since
the car will be operated on Chicago streets, the mayor wants
the money to punish you for
buying your car in the suburbs.
Well there ya go. I will now stop shopping on line.
This was to help retailers, not hurt them. The idea was to equalize the field between Barnes & Noble (including BN.com) and Amazon. It won't work because Amazon will just not have physical presence in Illinois, but it was NOT to put retailers out of business.
As for CouponCabin.com, whatever. Does anyone really give a shit? Which 7 hipsters sending email coupons will you miss the most?
Quinn, you are, by far, one stupid f**k!
I don’t buy SHIT in Illinois.
I go out of state, use catalogs, & other methods in order not to pay your extortionist tax rates.
I always make it a point to ask the sales rep if they add Illinois tax to my order, if they do, I cancel & tell them WHY.
So go ahead Quinn, hire another 100 plus people for your staff, they ain't getting MY money.
Wait until they pass the state income tax on pensions. It won't be those over $100,000, it will be everyone. They'll make it effective to pensions paid out regardless of where the money goes. Meaning you move to Texas, South Dakota, Florida, etc, Illinois will still demand their tax!
It's like these assholes got their economic degrees out of a box of Cracker Jack. Raising taxes somewhere else causes revenue to go down...why not try it here? Kind of like supporters of Socialism. It's not that it doesn't work, it's just that the right people haven't been in charge yet.
Fucking assholes. Keep chasing businesses out of the state. All we're going to have left here is illegals, murderers, violent sex offenders, useless, lazy assholes who don't work and collect welfare and then those of us that have to pay for it all and put up with it because we can't leave.

This always amazed me! I know it's been going on for years, but how this ever came to be is beyond me. How can we legally be taxed by our county and city for buying something outside these "boundaries"?
I know this IS the most crooked city, county and state but WTF? How did this stand a legal challenge??
Let me see ......
I buy this $2,298.00 Sony KDL-55NX810 LCD TV here in Il/Chicago - I get stuck paying the price + about 9% tax for a total price of about $2505.00
If go to Amazon I pay $1,899.00 damn what should I do??????
Oh ya free shipping too.
So damn hard to make a decision.
Can you help?????
These politicians think we are as dumb as they are.

When I worked in 010, every once in a while there was a move to go after the food carts. We were ALWAYS told to leave them alone... they were owned and run by one of the Illinois State Senators or Reps.
The vendors knew to stay away from the established restaurants and obey the "other" laws and the Police would not bother them. IF, somehow, they were involved in some criminal activity, almost ALWAYS, the carts and their contents were picked up without them being inventoried.
If anyone wanted to grandstand and start a war with the carts, they'd end up in a shitstorm that they didn't want or need. Trust me, it was always easier to ignore them.

You really don't grasp the big picture, do you? CouponCabin is affiliated with hundreds and hundreds of retailers. ANY retailer affiliated with CouponCabin will now be REQUIRED to charge Illinois sales tax.
Now, multiply that by any number of other Chicago or Illinois-based companies. Hmmm, Groupon comes to mind... I buy cookies through the mail from a company in Iowa, and I have to pay sales tax because they once had an offer listed on Groupon? Just WHAT benefit am I depriving Illinois of, that they have the right to tax the cookies I bought?
This is going to have far-reaching ramifications. (And, though you're obviously independently wealthy and not interested in lower prices, those Coupon cabin discounts save ME hundreds of dollars a year. Paying state sales tax NEGATES those savings and just gives Quinn more money to throw at felons' benefits.)
And, yes, it WILL affect Amazon, because they have AFFILIATION with brick and mortar businesses here in Illinois. They will need to disentangle themselves with DOZENS of Illinois-based companies in order to remain free of Illinois sales taxes. That REALLY helps Illinois businesses, now doesn't it?
Fucking assholes. Keep chasing businesses out of the state. All we're going to have left here
Better yet give business a tax break, and get the unions out they are payed to much, We can do what Arizona does right to work state. Pay no more then 10 dollars an hour then we will, get more business in the state.
Yup! Went to Best Buy in Indiana, bought Sony Bravia HDTV & Omni-Directional antenna ; total cost $933.97...tax, only $65.38
Still a bit much, but the satisfaction knowing my money ain't fueling Illinois corruption & someone is short his ration of flamin hots & grape soda is price-fuckin-less!
Governor Quinn just lost his bid for Governor in the NEXT election. May God fuck him in the ASS with a giant tree stump.
Got some news for you there stating Mr. Potatohead is not going to get re-elected.
LOLOLOLOL.. This is Illinois dumbass!
I L L I N O I S.. You read that!
Not the Land of Lincoln!
The Land of Leeches!
Get the picture....
He who promises the most gifts from the treasury to those who have not, will always be re-elected... Thus Mr. Potatohead. the Democrat.
And I have news for you buddy. He's only just begun. Much more to follow. Believe me...
Keep voting Democratic you idiots.
Illinois government knows how to shoot itself in the foot and all in the name of "fairness." A PREVIOUS STORY gives a great summation of Quinn's job-killing skills.

Just wait till you move to Florida upon retirement and have to pay Illinois Income Taxes on your pension. Your reduced pension. That should really frost your cake.

By law, you are required to pay the difference in taxes to Illinois, the Indiana tax subtracted from the Illinois tax equals what you owe Illinois. They call it "use tax."
Even though it wasn't sold in Illinois, it will be used in Illinois and Illinois wants it's use tax.
That is the basis for Illinois claiming to be owed tax on each and every purchase made on the internet by an Illinois resident. The Supreme Court says you may not owe sales tax but says nothing about this "use tax."
They get you coming and going.
All I want from Illinois is one more free road map so I can find my way out one last time upon retirement.
Amazon - and Overstock.com - have now officially cut all ties with any brick and mortar company they were connected to in Illinois.
Thanks, Mr. Millionaire governor and all you millionaire politicians.
http://www.myfoxchicago.com/dpp/news/politics/amazon-cuts-business-illinois-online-sales-tax-law-20110311
Note well the politicians' childish mischaracterization of "presence in Illinois":
"Under the new law, online retailers are deemed to have a presence in Illinois if they have a contract with an affiliate based in here."
What counts as an affiliate? Perhaps even a person working at home, or so a potential employer might fear.
Nice work Democrats and Republicans.
My wife had a small wholesaler business that sold supplemental DVDs for autistic and developmentally delayed children. She sold them through Amazon. She hardly made any money, this being a labor of love. Thanks to Quinn Amazon has canceled her account.
