What's in a Name?

  • A federal jury awarded a South Side man $100,000 Monday in a lawsuit against the city alleging he was beaten by Chicago Police officers who planted drugs on him.

Al Williams was 35 when members of the now-disbanded Special Operations Section arrested him on May 31, 2007, near 79th and Dobson in the Grand Crossing neighborhood, his attorneys said.

The officers had jokingly referred to Williams as “Mr. Cataract” because he is blind in one eye, the lawsuit said. The officers allegedly struck Williams in the head with a blunt object. He was charged with cocaine possession and resisting arrest. He spent about 40 days in jail before he was released on bail. He later went to trial on the criminal charges and won.

“Juries have believed him twice now,” said one of Williams’ attorneys, Brendan Shiller, adding that the city rejected a $25,000 settlement offer and opted to go to trial.

The officers denied they had roughed up Williams or planted drugs on him. Williams had dropped the drugs on the ground after he crashed his bicycle into a utility pole, the officers said.

The officers said they stopped him because he had a history of drug arrests. Williams, a furniture mover, has been convicted of three crimes, including a drug charge in 2003 that resulted in probation, records show. The jury wasn’t allowed to hear about his criminal record.

Yeah, you'd hate to hear about a plaintiff's criminal record of dope offenses before you gave him the means to keep himself swimming in heroin and coke for the next three years or so....

Wait a minute - what was that lawyer's name?
  • "...said one of Williams’ attorneys, Brendan Shiller..."
Ah yes. The spawn of ultra-liberal, former aldercreature and police hater Helen. Making a living suing Chicago - a closed loop, so it seems. Connections, connections, connections.

It never ends.

Slight correction, SCC. Helen Shiller is still alderman of the 46th. We have to put up with her for another six weeks, and then we are free at last.

She's not ultra-liberal. She's a socialist, pure and simple. Went to Cuba in the 1970s to learn about Castro's schools and to bring that knowledge back to the U.S.

As for Helen Jr, he makes his living as a lawyer suing cops. He also managed the aldermanic campaign of Marc Kaplan, running for his mother's seat last February. Kaplan is the leader of CopWatch, those idiots who ride around on their bikes and videotape the police doing their jobs, trying to keep the gang thugs in Uptown from killing us all.

Kaplan didn't make the run-off, but Molly Phelan did. This weekend Marc Kaplan endorsed her and rumor has it Phelan has promised him a job in her aldermanic office if she's elected.

What makes this all so disgusting is that Phelan's running on a law and order platform. She has the endorsement of the FOP. She was a CAPS facilitator and her great-grandfather was a Chicago cop killed in the line of duty in the 1920s.

Yet she's hanging out with Shiller's handpicked candidate and the founder of CopWatch. Shameful. Heaven help us if she gets elected today. Shiller-Lite. Her great grandfather must be spinning in his grave.

This clown will probably be dead in a couple of years, broke for sure. No matter how much money you give someone that's never been gainfully employed, they piss it away because they have no appreciation for the worth of the dollars they have.

bad guy gets 67,000 shiller gets 33,000 plus attorney fees that will be about 125,000. maybe its a good idea to just settle some of these cases. they could have gotten out for 25K and now they are looking at 225,000... sometimes just fighting every single case is not the smartest thing.

well hey, at least looking from the officers point of view they didnt have any punitive damages so who cares? Sure sh*thead got money but all in all who really cares? Just as long as the officers ended up ok is fine with me. dude will blow his money in about a year and a half.. maybe less. its pretty hard to get hit punitivly and actually have the damages stick. most if not all of the punitive damages that have been awarded to people have never stuck once they were contested. I only know of one instance and that was the idiots who put a dopw case on someone years ago.. hate to say it but those guys got caught red handed lying. i know over a dozen times coppers have been hit punitivly at trial, some close to 100k but after the trial ends the punitive is dropped, reversed by an appeal or most of the times it was picked up by the city... still scary though to have to think about.

I work a south side district, worked the tac thing for a number of years.

Reading this story it just confirmed what I learned.

Why jeopardize the life I provide for my family on a CB??

A piece of shit selling dope to other pieces of shit in a neighborhood that could care less.

If all you got is a drop case, than take the dope...mess with their cash flow a little.

Your arrest records are available to defense lawyers, a high number of drop cases with no pc (or it seems with pc) throws a flag.

To those of you who KNOW what I'm talking about get it.

DO NOT lose your self respect and credibility, if its there its there,if not there is always tomorrow.

You try polishing a turd all you end up is smelling like shit.

Ya the jury also wasn't allowed to hear the 60 Minutes interview w/ the SOS scumbag admitting what they did and how frequently they did it.

So the average person on a jury believes a civilian over a cop now. See what you've done? It's only going to get worse.

Well, look at it like this...
The lawyers get half, so that brings it down to $50K. After the first annuity payment is blown on dope, flamin' hots and gold rims for the non-running 1986 Cadillac sitting in the front yard, the balance of the award will be sold to JG Wentworth for .10 cents on the dollar for a total, one-time take home payment of 10 grand.

Wrong. In Federal Court the lawyer gets to bill the loser (City of Chicago) for his fee separately.

His "fees" could very likely amount to more than the award to his client.

Lawyer gets fees separate from the award. Maybe more. Federal Court, rules are different. If the guy gets $1 the lawyer still gets to bill for full fees. Flint Taylor & People's Law Office got a million or more in fees when they sued on behalf of one of the Wilson brothers. Wilson got $1, one buck, lawyers got a million.

what a terrible time to have a trial. 100% the reason they found against the city is because of the new scandle in 023. if that never happened it would have been another win for the city... just my opinion.

The average person believes the average cop is no more likely to be honest than the average person. It's probably even true.

The constant misleading and outright lies don't improve the department's credibility one iota.
