Section 8 in Winnetka?
Tucked between luxury estates off Sheridan Road near Lake Michigan, a Winnetka statue depicts a homeless man, head resting on hand, with this inscription: "No tenements for some and castles for others."
Some have noted the irony in those words as an ugly debate has roiled over a village plan to introduce affordable housing in Winnetka, long a bastion of wealth and philanthropy.
In the hamlet of 12,000, some residents have protested the plan, igniting fears of federally subsidized housing and government interference. Supporters argue that the proposal is hardly radical and would allow the village's police, teachers and shopkeepers to live and retire in Winnetka, where the median home price was $1.1 million last year.
In a 25-page publication mailed to Winnetka residents last week, the homeowners association called the village Plan Commission's proposal un-American, predicting it will lower property values, attract criminals and force residents to subsidize those who rely on "hand-outs."
Some supporters of the plan expressed shock at the rhetoric, with one resident writing to officials, "Aren't we better than this?"
Labels: suburban, we got nothing

Actually this will be good for the police because they certainly will need more of them.
How about a few arab rathole corner stores to service the new residents?
And a Public aid office.
And of course the ever present methadone clinic.
Welcome to the real world.
It's only OK to tell others how to live with the beast. When the beast wants to come live near them, they get all "upitty."
What's the matter, little democRATS? Don't like the idea of those minorities you champion coming too close to home? Aren't you being a little bit, um, what's the word, racist?
Liberals. You just have to love them.
Bleeding heart liberals ain't worth a Damn.
You need to meet a minimum salary to qualify and for now they only plan to make it available to village employees and seniors.
Ah, it's all well and good to want to help the "downtrodden." To provide "services" to them. To help them "adjust" to our "difficult" society. Just NIMBY! Keep voting Democratic, there, Winnetka. This is what you get!
it won't work because the Properties will find their value like water finds it level.
A teacher/policeman/etc... is sold a modest home in Winnetka for 250,000.00. Five years later a buyer gives him 500,000.00, raises it and builds a mc mansion for 600,000.00. 5 years later the property goes on the market for 1.1 mil. so much for affordable housing in Winnetka.
Rich liberals are a treasure. I just wish we could bury them so someone could dig them up in say, 500 years or so.
12,000 huh, can some sleuth find out how many of them are registered democrats?
If there are registered democrats, I'm sure they would welcome the diversity and change public housing would bring.
Wasn't Winnetka the suburb that would not allow their children to participate in a sporting event in Arizona because of their immigration law? Perhaps we could send them all if our poor illegal immigrants they so vigorously defend.
The rich and uppity don't want to have to deal with lowlifes.
What liberals never seem to understand is that water seeks its own level. The reason people live in a nice area is (generally) because they work hard to do so, and actually have a vested interest in their community. Then again, they've already fucked up middle class neighborhoods, let's finish the job.
You think these bleeding hearts will vote for the "great HOPE" again in 2012?
I would live to start an organization called People Against Public Housing (P.A.P.H.). I consider myself to be an educated progressive, but not a liberal nor conservative. However, I don't think that public housing goes with the American principle of "free enterprice". Public Housing has always ended up in failure in this country as well as in the Soviet Union (when communism was alive). I can see the government offering some assistance to senior citizens (senior buildings), but people need to realize that if you can't afford to live in a certain community, then you should NOT move there. Why does any community have a collective responsibility to provide free housing? This country already provides freedom to all of it's citizens (and some illegals too). Thus, stop regulating "free" enterprice for the sake of trying to feel ethically/morally balance. If you believe in public housing...GO DONATE YOUR OWN HOUSE IN PUBLIC.
PLEASE DO NOT BRING THIS TOPIC UP ANYMORE...IT GETS MY BLOOD PRESSURE VERY HIGH!
To 12:25 am,,,many towns in the SF Bay area (especially in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties) already have apartment buildings and town home areas for public employees. They charge a modest rent and they pay for themselves. Otherwise they coudn't get anybody to work there because the commute would be far too long and they don't pay the public employees enough to afford to live in town or close to town that isn't in a shithole area.
Even Joe DeLopez has a waiver to live out of Winnetka as he can't afford to live in town either.
I'm all for it! Sick and tired of these liberal morons telling the taxpayers of Chicago what is rightous and how our tax dollars shouldbe spent. I hope it happens!
Obama should be pushing this one.
It's all fine and good until the CPS honor roll students start peddling dope to your kids.
Boy, you people in Winnetka screwed up BIG time!!! You just let the cancer in and, once in, you will never be able to get rid of it. There goes your property values, your sense of security, your good schools, and your city budget.
On the bright side, all those Dummycrats will soon become republicans! LOL
It would be nice if they would get their heads out of their a$$es and make some allowance for middle class housing.
Share the "wealth"!

O my, how will Buffy and I survive. If we wished to comingle with the common man we would visit your urban city dwellings where you say there exist methadone clinics and (gasp) public aid offices. Somebody must be held accountable. Buffy! Buffy! Get Rahm on the line, we simply must squash this insurrection.
Stick to your guns. Don't let the liberals make you feel guilty. When the scourge comes in, they'll be the first ones to leave.
Most of Winnetka is Republican
Hope they put them there, the libs could see how well their ideas work!
HAHAHAHAHA!
Enjoy the ride, lake front liberals!
Hopefully we get to see the toilet overflow in all the big-money northern suburbs... They need to be victims of the fakir of fuckery's "hope & change" campaign.
Instead of "a chicken in every pot," it'll be "shitheads on every block."
Look at it this way... Their children won't have to hazard being caught by the mean & evil Police while trying to find their way "back to 290" with a pocket full of party favors. Just walk across the shady lane and knock on the door of their new found friends!
They'll all be newly cool just because...
Don't be selfish Winnetka! You have to share in the fun as well...
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
Lib-tards are a scream!
Forty years ago the homes on both sides of Prentice Marshall should have been purchased by police and fire organizations. The residents of the tenth floor of 1111 W. Roosevelt should have been offered the use of these homes rent free.
I guarantee things would be differnt in Chicago. Might even have a Republican mayor.
soon metal detectors will be installed in winenetka schools
Aahhahahahaaahaha! Now they'll see how it feels! "What's good enough for the goose, is good for the gander."
too many judges and politicians live there, eh?
Hahahahahahahaha
NIMBY!!!!!!
Good I love it!!!! Let them see what these POS are really like....bet they won't be feeling all warm & fuzzy then!!!
"Tucked between luxury estates off Sheridan Road near Lake Michigan, a Winnetka statue depicts a homeless man, head resting on hand, with this inscription: "No tenements for some and castles for others.'"
See? We did our part for the unfortunate. What more do you want from us?
Unreal.
As a kindness to the distraught residents, we should have put rollers under Cabrini-Green and moved it up there in its stinking, shouting, howling entirety -- just to help assuage the guilt expressed by that statue.
"'Aren't we better than this?' Evidently, no. But it's fun to pretend."
Right between the eyes, SCC...
Okay, I'm only smiling because my ex-husband lives there....hahahaha!

Better be NRA members too and gun toting.
1)The minimum salary for owning one of these subsidized homes is $75K per year. I GUESS that's letting the rabble in for people who make millions.
2)Winnetka is as republican as they come -- no liberals in evidence.
Soon "rocks and blows" will be heard up on green Bay Road... too funny
I'm surprised that many of you are reacting as if ex-housing project tenants will suddenly be moving to Winnetka. The price of the "affordable" housing they're calling for is in no way affordable to, say, ex residents of Cabrini Green, and THAT is what Winnetka residents are acting like is going to happen.
As pointed out in a previous comment: "The minimum salary for owning one of these subsidized homes is $75K per year." I guess Winnetka residents are lacking in math skills, because the criminals they're anticipating don't make that kind of money, well, not legally.
You think these bleeding hearts will vote for the "great HOPE" again in 2012?
Of course they will. They didn't vote for him because they liked his policies or because of character. They voted for him because it made them feel good to be a part of the Obama 'change' illusion.
"Wasn't Winnetka the suburb that would not allow their children to participate in a sporting event in Arizona because of their immigration law?"
That was Highland Park. While this move may or may not have been particularly bright, please note that Highland Park does in fact put its money where its mouth is. The city's affordable housing program is fairly substantial and has not led to the sorts of problems which some commenters predict. The city is also host to a county health care clinic which was originally the subject of the same sorts of concerns but which has not led to any problems that I'm aware of.
