Not content with driving away a sizable percentage of manufacturing and retail establishments in the city, some idiots want to drive away even more businesses:
An influential group of aldermen today proposed an ordinance that would require all cell phones sold in Chicago to include a feature allowing parents to block their children from texting while driving.
The legislation would require that all new cell phones and "mobile communication devices" purchased in the city beginning next year include the capability to disable the texting function if the device is used in a vehicle traveling more than five miles per hour.
Ald. Edward Burke, 14th, one of the co-sponsors, said the proposal would save lives by allowing parents to take away a major source of distraction for teenage drivers.
Here's another way to can remove distractions from your kids - raise them correctly. We've tried this and it actually works. And you don't lose any businesses.

Big government like a bully that needs to be punched out.
These knuckleheads aren't even sure how this technology would work, or if it even exists.
Maybe they should be working on more important issues, like how they're going to fund the neglected pensions and pay the bills that the previous administration ran up.

Although officials had said the program would deport immigrants who were convicted criminals, Mr. Quinn wrote, fewer than 20 percent of immigrants deported under the program had serious convictions.

So my kids got their phones on the suburbs, guess theyll be exempt.

The city is broke and this shit is the best they can do? While working out this great law, did any of them have a chance to figure out how to get the city out of the hole? Get rid of half of the aldercritters, we are paying too much for stupid shit like this. The only people that benefit from laws like this are the politicians. By not letting darwin take out the stupid,you get stupid adults as voters.
The parents are just as guilty of this behavior as the kids are!
It is not a perfect solution, but I have seen the bloodshed caused by a TXTing drivers and it does not matter what age they are.

Hey Eddie Maybe Mr. McCarthy could put a gps on your city police spec car,and for your huge wasted cpd Sergeants paid detail maybe gps in their city phones and radios,that way if you ever need help we would know exactly where you are! Like in Wisconsin and other prime golf courses with your detail guys! Mr. McCarthy if you put Burkes and the treasurers huge detail back in patrol it would save city much needed dollars with them being overpaid and we could up to 4 extra cars that they use. the technology on this isn't hard, but this is something that should be done at the state level, not the city.

This really is Burke being beyond stupid. Trying to tell giant cell phone manufacturers that they have to add some feature in order to sell their product in the City of Chicago is just going to result in them pulling out of the market. The city limits will be lined with cellphone stores, the way Howard Street used be lined with bars when Evanston was a dry town.

Who gives a shit. Most of the cell phone stores are arabs who run shady businesses in the first place. They sell pirated and bootleg items, drug paraphenalia, and cell phones. They'll even put the cell phones in the name of John Doe or Sam Doe for the drug dealers so their phones can't be traced. The cell phone store at 99th and Western is busy with ghetto fabulous folks seven days a week. They block traffic and throw their trash everywhere. Good riddance to the cell phone store!!

What Quinn failed to mention, that under the Secure Communities Act, it also provide the deportation of violent and " hardened criminals "...ie. felons.

Trouble is they often take out two or three innocent people with them before they get their Darwin Award.

How about recognizing that kids under the age of 18 do not and never have possessed the judgment and maturity to drive a car, and raise the driving age to 18 nationwide?
We should have done this 50 years ago. Automobile wrecks are the biggest killers of American teens, ahead of shootings, drug abuse, and every other cause.
We'd save a lot of fuel, too.
