St Jude's Turnout

Definitely one of the nicer marching days we can remember. And one of the better attended ones, too:
  • A couple thousand police officers and their families turned out at the Gold Star Families Memorial and Park – just east of Soldier Field – in the annual St. Jude march.

Leading the St Jude march: Chicago’s Interim Police Superintendent Terry Hillard: A former superintendent of police who is a veteran of these marches, these days of remembrance.
Of course, there's always one media outlet that tries to downplay the march. This year, the dishonor falls on the BreakingNews.com site:
  • Hundreds of police officers and supporters gathered near Soldier Field to take part in the annual St. Jude Memorial March to remember officers who have been killed in the line of duty.
Hundreds? Seriously, were these people even there? Or are they dialing it in from out of town again?

Nice to see a bunch of the old friends again though. Good to see you all and be safe, now and always.

Da Mayo what a disgrace. He deserves a big FU next year from all attendees. Maybe the march should end at the south parking lot of Soldier field and have all 7,000 of us give him a BIG FU on the count of 3. Hell he is less than 2 blocks from the south lot. And Rahmer a no show does not start out on the right foot since he attended several police services while running for Mayor giving the impression he was sincere. We the police know what this day means with or without the support of our politicians. God Bless to those who made the sacrifice.

so it's McCarthy. I can't believe our organization is that fucked up that not one single exempt, or white shirt is capable in the eyes of rahm or daley to lead us. Sad. But kind of true. I really don't respect any of them. They are all just yes men and none are leaders. None of them stuck up for the guys in blue when jody was destroying us. None of them went to the media to support us. They are just all too afraid to "lose their spot." That thinking makes for terrible leaders.
I'm going to give McCarthy a chance.

Its sad statement of fact isn't it. The ones that put in, we don't necessarily want at the top, and the ones that should have put in for the top spot didn't want it. Don't blame them either. Lets see how this shakes out, might not be a bad thing

Just a quick thanks to all the Family members, friends, and supporters who also made the trek down to the lakefront to show support. It was one of the nicer mornings in recent memory.

That being said and this being a blog to post comments and grievances (sorry I misplaced the festivus pole), just a couple of thoughts:

Although the location keeps us off the beaten path, it is still a picturesque setting and culminates by Our Memorial. Preferred Michigan Ave. though, more of a traditional parade feel, greater chance of building spontaneous passerby viewers. Out-of-Towners often were impressed at what they saw.

Mayor-elect better not forget to clear his calendar next year and be there.

Nice to see some of the people in BIS wearing the uniform as all who are marching should. There were the occasional Detectives that bucked the trend and remembered they were Police Officers and the entire Gang Unit was in Uniform. There is absolutely NO reason why every PO there should not be in uniform. Detectives, you are Patrolmen. Narcotics and the rest of Homan Square, you will look as equally stupid with dread-locks and a foo-man-choo beard in uniform as you do in a suit, but you’re still the Police and that is why you are there.

Having stayed until the very end, I was not surprised to still have to wait to get out of the lot. Parking might have been a bitch to find when it was in 018, but dispersal was sure easier and quicker…plus no TSAs screwing things up.

And lastly, the timing this year presented a logistic problem that hopefully won’t happen again for awhile. But St. Jude’s is our day. The city gives the permits to parade and have celebrations that suck up manpower, it is unfortunate when we have to compete with a Cinco de Mayo celebration but more so an organized labor march commemorating the Haymarket Square Riots. The irony of the latter being that we honor those line-of-duty deaths including the Eight Policemen who were killed that day.

Stay safe people.

Good, thank you. They should not have been there anyway. How can units be fully manned and the Districts work with skeleton crews. I hope the new Supt. addresses that. How have MSF and TRU do the exact same things, be fulling manned, full of resources and not be resposbible to the Deputy Chief or Commanders they are supposed to be assisting! GEU and Gang Intelligence. What is the difference and why is Commander Mealer in charge of either one Gang Intelligence? He has never been a street officer and would not know a gang member if he hit him! This is truly a waste of manpower right there!

C. $20,000
D. $30,000
E. Mikey will not tell the members when asked at the union meeting.

That's the reasoning of a heathen and the public cheers this nonsense as "getting tough on those out of control cops."

Perhaps after the Great Chicago Fire of Summer 2011 this season of hatred toward CPD for the sake of distraction and naked politics will come to an end.

In my opinion the parade is much nicer on the lakefront. Parking is easier , for us and our families. I think marching by the memorial is fitting and there appears to be more spectators. When we marched downtown, parking was a hassle and at that time of the morning on a Sunday it felt like walking through a ghost town.

How is it that we were at the exact same address on Michigan ave. for over 17 years, but only after 4 or so on the lakefront we were moved down solidarity drive about a block and no one knew?? Apparently Tobias asked our commander where 013 & 014 were, because they didn't march in the right order. My guess is they missed the 8 1/2x11 hand printed (by some 2nd grader) sign on a light post somewhere, like we almost missed ours. What would be wrong with painting unit #s on the pavement? Yes, there are a lot of people, but this stuff really isn't that hard.

I was very unhappy with the planing of this event. Most exits to parking were blocked. This was after waiting in lines at least 2 blocks on the exits both North and South Lakeshore Drive. The start time was changed on Friday from 8:30 AM to 8:00 AM. This was really a stupid chang in such short notice. When we were leaving there, after being unable to march, there were still Officers trying to park their cars. Half way through the March there were only about ten people on the reviewing stand. About half way through there were about thirty persons on the reviewing stand. Who ever pland this should never be in charge again. I am a retired disapointed officer

I agree to a point with the comment about decorum during the march. I don't have a problem with the pets as long as they are well trained but all the hemming and hawing while marching is totally disrespectful. Let's not forget why were there. Once the marching starts the bullshit should stop. March quietly , solemnly and as professionally as you can.
