The Bleeding Continues

  • Car Care World Expo has reversed its decision to book McCormick Place for 2013, becoming the first trade show to exit Chicago after a federal court ruling invalidated labor changes enacted by the state legislature last year.

"Until the work rules are on par with Las Vegas, it’s a no-go for us," said Eric Wulf, chief executive officer of the International Carwash Association, a Chicago-based trade group that has held its show in Las Vegas for the past five years. The 2013 show will now be held in Las Vegas.

The show would not have been one of Chicago’s largest, but it attracts about 6,000 exhibitors and attendees, who together would have spent an estimated $8.5 million in the area.
According to the article, six other shows have filed notice to hold their events elsewhere. Along with Rahm pulling coppers out of thin air, he better be able to pull a few hundred million dollars out of his ass shortly.

** CME Update**

CME Has Given Big to Politicians Now Trying to Retain It

[...]

A Chicago News Cooperative analysis of state records found that the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, although long a major player in campaigns, has accelerated its local political giving recently.

The exchange has donated $1.27 million to Illinois politicians in the last two decades, with almost $500,000 of those campaign contributions coming in the last 1-1/2 years, including:

* A $200,000 check to Emanuel’s bid for mayor in November.

* Two contributions together worth $150,000 to state Democratic Party leader Michael Madigan’s efforts to continue as speaker of the Illinois House.

* A $50,000 donation to Quinn’s general election run last year, after the exchange gave $40,000 to the governor during the Democratic primary campaign.

* A combined $30,000 in February to three committees controlled by Ald. Edward Burke (14th Ward), the chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee.

CME follows Caterpillar and Sears as Illinois companies who have publicly threatened to leave the state since Quinn and lawmakers pushed through the dramatic income-tax hike in January.

I smell another tax break coming.

Money that could be used for more cops on the street or to fund promised pensions or to pay for many other much needed city services will be returned to the corporation.

When are people going to start thinking too -- like when they hear the political rhetoric about United Airlines creating 1,300 new jobs.

That's not 1,300 new opportunities with 1,300 idle workers in Illinois being hired.

No, not at all.

United will bring most of the people to fill those positions from other areas of the country. We'll get some scraps maybe but that's about it.

It's political rhetoric.

Another word game. "creating new jobs"

Yeah. they moved people from Texas to Illinois and that's how we can get away with saying that something is being created in Illinois.

Furthermore, United and Continental airlines merged but are still awaiting a certificate of operation from the FAA which is expected by the end of 2011.

Until United receives that cert. the airlines are operated as though they are separate.

Bottom line is once the certification is received you can bet money the layoffs will follow to save money.

So all this b.s. and over hype about new jobs coming to Illinois by the Governor and Mayor I think need to be put into perspective.

The time for TIF scamming our taxes into the pockets of city hall friends is OVER.

That money belongs to the taxpayers of this city, and the taxpayers demand it be spent on the core infrastructure it was designed to pay for, education, police, fire, water and sewer, streets and san and lighting.

Reallocating taxpayer dollars into shit neighborhoods hasn't accomplished a fucking thing in terms of protecting the taxpayers, educating them or keeping this city clean.

The illegal misappropriation of taxpayer monies from their lawful purpose should be first and foremost in everyone mind.

Next on that list is the fucking "menu money" that diverts taxpayer dollars into the hands of private contributors of local alderman in exchange for votes. All work performed by that money is to be done by city employees working on behalf of the city and it's taxpayers, NOT the out of town private firms who belly up to the contribution bar for the alderman.

TIF and "menu money" should be our targets against killing off politic protected city jobs for private sector unprotected jobs.

The Car Care World Expo stated last year that this would most likely be the last year that they would hold an expo here.

* the cost of doing business here and all the red tape
* the death of Meigs Field
* crime
* climate

Sunday I was at the Midway Marriott and business people were in. They asked me if there were any local sight seeing in my neighborhood (places within walking distance). I had asked Mayor Daley about turning that huge vacant bank on 63rd St between Central/Cicero into an aviation/military museum... something possibly paid for by Southwest Airlines, the National Guard, etc. He sent me a letter about some event at OHARE that was going on at the time (?).

City leaders do not have ay business relationship building let alone any foresight into how to generate revenue while keeping the character of our neighborhoods intact...

BIG DEAL. Quinn has done nothing but some 1950s solutions that don't work anymore. Recall Quinn - he has been bad for Illinois.

Chicago's been losing convention business for years. Remember 25 years ago when the conventions were in town every other week? I worked at Water Tower, and it was like a cash register.

The sad fact is that the unions have made it impossible to do business in Chicago. They preferred short-term gains to long-term prosperity, and you can see where that's gotten us. It's too expensive--and, now, too dangerous--for people to do business here.

Laughing or not laughing has absolutely no effect on the looting of the economy. You can make funny faces, stand on your head, do whatever you want, and the vast chasm between the haves and have-nots will merely continue to widen as the Inner Circle drags off bags of cash money.

Example -- Detroit is an unlivable place, made even more unlivable by the fact that, although it is an "urban prairie," no ordinary working person can afford to rent an apartment there.

We are following closely along. Another board-up on Narragansett the other day, can see through the empty house from front to back, except for the sign posted on the door. "THIS HOUSE OWNED BY INTEGRABANK."

?

I wonder what answering service this "Integrabank" is.

U guy s have no f&cking clue about what goes on at Mccormick place.I was in fact a union worker.Sure some of the rules can use some changing to save some money for companies but enough about the workers.Instead of checking ur facts u instead rely on what newspapers and special interest say kind of what is going on with pensions.
Mcpier charges the most per square foot for booth space compareed to the rest. The price for food ,coffee and other items are also skyhigh. The two main companies that set up all the shows charges about triple of what they pay the union worker. So if a carpenter gets about $32 an hr. they charge about $80.
So stop bitching about the the union guy that makes about 65 k and bitch about aldermen that steal $110k in salary for part time work. or a ceo who makes millions and sends all the jobs to India or China.

The headlines read:

"Motorola Solutions to bring 400 jobs to Chicago‎ "

Ya know... People will argue that it's not government that creates jobs, that jobs are created by private business.

Oh really? Follow the money trail!

Governor Quinn cuts a corporate welfare check to Motorola for $100 million dollars to offset the recent "we're all in this together state tax increases"

Then Motorola makes a token gesture announcing 400 jobs coming to Illinois.

Gee do the math.

The Illinois taxpayers just gave Motorola $100 million dollars and got 400 jobs in return.

That's enough money to pay 400 employees $250K for a year.

That's enough to pay 400 employees $125K for two years or until the current tax increase is set to expire.

Who created the jobs?

Not to mention what kind of jobs they will be. Living wage or part-time temporary positions, transfers or new hires?

Chances are that I would speculate we're talking about cell phone sales reps working part-time and the jobs will vaporize before the state tax increases sunset.

Furthermore, don't make assumptions of an economic turnaround based upon this "jobs" propaganda.

Like residency, putting more cops on the street, what constitutes the act of having sex (with that women-- Monica) and the words mission accomplished, the meanings and intent are all subject to individual interpretation (political spin) that often are in reality different than what the majority interpret them as.

Rhetoric playing to your hopes, your dreams, and your emotions to push a feel good election agenda

" Number of homeless in Illinois falls 7 percent "

New numbers from the federal government show that the number of homeless people in Illinois has fallen 7 percent since 2007.

A report released today for Congress by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development details homelessness since 2007 in the United States. Its statistics show that about 0.1 percent of Illinoisans are homeless, or about one in every 1,000 residents.

The report found that the Illinois homeless population was 15,487 in 2007, falling to a low of 14,055 in 2009 before increasing to 14,395 in 2010. That's a difference of 1,092 fewer homeless residents since 2007 in Illinois.

Homelessness fell 53 percent in Michigan. It increased by 127 percent in Louisiana and 99 percent in Mississippi.

more >> http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/news/local/chibrknews-number-of-homeless-in-illinois-falls-7-percent-20110614,0,3257617.story

I guess we're suppose to conclude that things are getting better in Illinois because... if we are to believe the homeless numbers, they are down.

Well Michigan's numbers are down 53% how are things going over there eh?

The question is where did the homeless go? Are they now not homeless living in foreclosed properties? Are they now in Jail? Did they leave the state? Did they die from the cold winter? Where they just not counted for other reasons?

There are many questions to be answered before we can assume the homeless now have a place to live meaning the Illinois economy is improving.

Don't get sucked into the media propaganda.ask questions.

By the way. Notice how the numbers have fallen from 2007 however they are on the rise when compared to 2008, 2009.... nice try at the political spin agenda people..

This is pretty simple really. Not enough cops to protect the downtown tax and tourist base. Visitors hear the news that Chicago is no longer safe to visit and change their plans and go elsewhere where their safety isn't a concern. Same goes with businesses. Why would any business group want to hold a convention in this corrupt city, where it takes a union electrician to change a light bulb, like a previous poster mentioned. They will go elsewhere where it doesn't cost their first newborn. With just these two groups gone, huge amounts of tax revenue will be lost, never to be seen again. The way it is now, this city and state will continue the slow descent from a thriving powerhouse and business magnet to a larger version of Detroit. The only way back to greatness is by the basics. First and foremost is adequate police protection or people won't come here. Second, the politicians (that means you Quinn) need to quit making anti-business decisions and make this state business friendly, and that includes keeping the unions from gouging everything they touch.

Where there's chaos there's money to be made.

People why do you think the city refuses to hire more police? Simple, Jfled and his minions fudged the crime stats for the last three years telling everyone that crime is going down. That's what everyone believed. So the politicians got scared and said this is not good because if the news is not dominated with crime then they actually might have time to look at what we're doing. In order to keep the gravy train flowing we need to get that crime rate back up so nobody has any time to actually investigate what we're doing. That could be embarrasing. So here's what we do. We stop hiring police officers and crime will once again dominate the news so our gravy train flourishes again. As an added bonus we will not be paying into the police pension fund for the retiring police officers that we do not replace so this will create more chaos with the police pension fund creating another news worthy item that will detract from our mission. The bottom line is this. If every politician did the right thing there would be no crime. If they held the judges, states attorneys and police accountable until crime as we know it would vanished. But that would mean that they would have to settle for the meager salaries and pensions that they have given themselves because there would be no more stealing. This is Chicago folks and every elected official in our town , our county and our country is royalty. You my friend are a peasant doing the will of royalty. How dare you demand that the city hire more police officers to protect the peasants. Royality are the only people that can't be replaced, you peasants are a dime a dozen or mabey even less than that, this being a Sanctuary state and all. Just be careful out there because if you're a crime victim you won't be paying taxes to royalty anymore. So let's get this chaos going.

pop vending machine in employee breakroom: price for single bottle = $1

So true about the situation at McCormick Place. Most people just readily agree and believe what they hear on tv or in the papers, without a clue as to what is really going on.

For example: it is true that McPier charges the highest prices per sq ft than anywhere in the country; it is also true that the two main show contractors charge double and sometimes triple the hourly rate for service.

When you want to eat while at a trade show hold on to your wallet, prices soar when the show starts; $5 for a slice of pizza, $7 or $8 for a burger, fries are $3.00 a small drink is $2.75. They rip them off! Levy makes a fortune on concessions!! Alot of conventioneers try ordering out etc to ease the pain a bit.

Ever try to rent a hotel room when a convention is in town? not unusual to see $300 a night or more for a room that normally is less than half of that; again gouging at it's finest..

The union worker is always the easiest to blame, but please keep in mind that those workers only work when a show is in town, if it's slow they are home waiting for a call to return, when the next show comes in; also, when the show is actually taking place, they are also off until it ends, and they can start dismantling it. In the summer and right after Christmas it's dead tradeshow-wise and the majority of those workers are off. But it's always easier to blame them than attack the real problem...

Teen mugged by group near Ogilvie

By Liam Ford Tribune reporter
10:59 a.m. CDT, June 15, 2011

A 15-year-old boy was robbed at gunpoint and roughed up by a group of seven people near the Ogilvie Transportation Center Tuesday evening, police said.

The boy was in the 100 block of North Clinton Street, on the same side of the street as Ogilvie, when he was approached by seven men or boys about 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, according to police. One of them took out a handgun and demanded the boy's money and valuables, and another hit him in the back of the head, police said.

[...]

The robber with the gun was described as a black man about 19 years old, about 6-foot-1 and weighing about 170 pounds. He had brown eyes and black hair in dreadlocks, as well as a tattoo on his right hand, according to police.

The attacker who hit the boy in the head also was a black male teen, between 15 and 18, about 5-foot-11 and weighing about 150 pounds. He was last seen wearing dark jeans shorts and a purple shirt with the letters "ENYCE" stenciled on the front in rhinestones, according to police.

Belmont Area detectives were investigating. No one was in custody.
