Coordinated Mayhem?
The media embargo that held in the face of two years of "wilding" incidents, only to break down when Shortshanks left office, doesn't seem to be holding up very well in the post-Shanks era. WLS-AM 890 has an entire article up questioning what really happened on the beach Monday:
- Was it a flash mob that forced the closure of North Avenue beach on Memorial Day?Chicago Police News Affairs released a statement saying they had to close the beach for safety reasons, as people were suffering heat exhaustion and emergency vehicles couldn't get through to help. But, WLS listeners say there was what they called a "large gangbanger element" at the Oak Street and North Avenue beaches.
Listeners report being at the beach, and seeing dozens of gang bangers pushing people off their bikes. Another listener says those causing havoc were not dressed for the beach and looked like "bad elements."

Well of course News Affairs is denying it was a "flash mob." Flash mobs are usually happy people. These are thugs intent on mayhem. Unfortunately for News Affairs, Chicago seems to have been part of a larger effort. If you hop over to The Drudge Report, numerous cities appear to have been targets of a nationwide coordinated effort:
- [Boston] - Fights broke out among rival gang members on Carson Beach in South Boston yesterday and spilled out across the city, triggering a massive law enforcement response from at least five agencies to stem the violence.
- [Nashville] -NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nearly two dozen police officers were called out to Wave Country on Monday afternoon after large crowds of people became unruly. The disturbance forced park managers to close the facility two hours early on Memorial Day.
- [Charlotte] - CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Questions continue to swirl as investigators search for whoever fired shots during one of many fights in uptown Charlotte early Sunday.
- [Long Island] - LONG BEACH, N.Y. - A Long Island police department says it had to call for backup to quell a beach melee involving hundreds of people that spilled out onto the streets and a nearby bus depot.
- [Rochester] - Rochester, N.Y. – A busy Memorial Day evening at the beach ended abruptly when fights broke out among at least 100 youth.
- [Miami] - The police shooting that killed one, wounded four bystanders and shocked South Beach over the holiday weekend may be the death knell for Urban Beach Week.
So who is everyone going to believe about this weekend? The media, which insists that the summer heat (that occurs every year in Chicago) led the police department to shut down an entire stretch of beaches when there's a giant cooling lake just inches away from the suffering people, or their own lying eyes that have incidents in six different cities along with a Chicago media outlet saying something completely different?
Oh, and be sure to read the comments in the Sun Times article. Very eye opening. We'd say read the BreakingNews.com comments, too, but the Tribune already shut those down before we had a chance to link them. How strange!

What a HUGE cover up by the city. Everyone knows what happened at the lake front. It's as obvious as the rain falling. It wasn't even that hot at all. Besides, isn't it supposed to be hot at the beach? Isn't that why people go to the beach? The heat had nothing to with it, Period!!! The lakefront is one of the few things I like about this city. Fucking shame. I read the trib's interview of the superintendent. He basically said that the guy with the loud radio on the corner affects the entire neighborhood. If you lock him up, you improve everyone's quality of life. Shit! WAKE UP! I'm no cop, but I'm sure cynical enough about the media and about the City to know that the story about an 88 degree heat emergency was bunk. After I saw the list of stories on Drudge, I knew what happened. We just have a City administration and a news media that are better liars.
When I saw the report on NBC5 Monday night, they mentioned something about trouble at the beach. I knew right away it was not the heat that closed the beach. Being a former CPD Lifeguard, I suffered through many days in the 90's and triple digits where you could not see the sand because it was so crowded and we never closed the beach because of the heat.
For whatever its worth, I was there. Everything people are saying about 'the scene at the beach' is absolutely true.
My brother, who left Chicago in the 80's, always references one particular 'moment' when he decided the city was no longer for him. Sadly, this was mine. I'll take a beating on my condo, I don't care. We're leaving now. The city has crossed that tipping point already seen by places like Gary or Detroit.
The non-producers have taken over.

One big difference between Chicago and every other city mentioned, there is some form of concealed carry. At least those folks have the opportunity to defend themselves against the animal population. I'm not sure that a crowded beach environment is the best place for a shootout but it would be nice to have the tools available to protect yourself and the family.
SCC...you only had to be present at the Chicago/State Red Line to appreciate this disaster. Ended up working at the street level entrance by McDonald's, then the concourse level, and then the platform because thousands of BLACK YOUTHS, many of the gang members, were running around acting "the fool", to put it lightly. There were no problems from any other race, just BLACKS. I even had older black people come up and say, "can you just lock them all up"? I just smiled and did what I could to at least keep them from jumping the turnstiles and pay for their rides, like everyone else had to.

The comments have been disabled now too on the Boston Globe story about the three days of riots at Carson Beach here in South Boston.
Yesterday morning, there were over 300 posts, and they were not complimentary of Mayor Menino and the Governor. It was also the top emailed story of the day.
No one at Menino's office was willing to talk about it when I called (one woman feigned ignorance about the incident, despite it being a big story in the Globe). I got transferred four times, before being put on hold.
When someone finally came back on the line it was to say they'd take a message for a Casey Hines who would call me back. Needless to say, no one's called.
Interestingly, we just got a flyer for an "abutters meeting" that this Casey Hines is hosting tomorrow for a developer who wants a zoning change to build up a roof top on a neighboring building. I'm sure she'll appreciate this opportunity to answer any questions about the Carson Beach riots publicly :)

This department has been gutted by the culture of "Me" and the cloutwhores who know nothing about working and refuse to back up officers that refuse to be intimidated by these animals.
A long time ago, when I first arrived on this job, officers could be brutal but fair. If you mouthed off to an officer that had stopped you, you got a crack and maybe a CB. Their response was driven by the SH**Head's attitude not the officers. Now, that respect reminder would be grounds for a Louisiana hotel stay for violating the savage's right to be an animal.
I am sorry, this issue is a non-issue. There are no more policemen to combat this culture because we have no command staff, politicians or citizens to support us. The army, national guard, etc would not be able to do it even with all their tools.
Do your time, collect what pension you may receive if any and make a tactical retreat to somewhere peaceful.

Absolutely correct.
Justice is a wonderful concept. It always seems to find it's target even if it takes years.
When Lakefront Liberal gets punched in the face by a 14 year old "poor boy" he will know that justice has found him. I will be there when justice finds "poor boy" who is either a 20 year old with a GSW to the head or a 40 year old natural death from kidney failure, but Lakefront Liberal will be present when justice finds him.
What a wondrous moment that will be. A true moment of clarity.
For many years I have worked on various remodeing projects on my off duty hours along the lake front and gold coast. One recurring problem was the fact that the persons who had their remodeling completed the previous year were now complaining very loudly about the dust and noise that was being generated by their neighbor's current remodeling project. Calls and complaints to the condo board, the city building inspectors, etc. Anything to make the neighbor's project extremely difficult to complete. I always thought that the attitude of these persons was I have mine and didn't care how much I put anyone else out but your not going to inconvience me in the least. These are the same folks who think that the jogging paths, bike routes, and beaches are their personel domain. Well the thugs and the savages have arrived. You didn't care when others were being victimized, you didn't support the efforts of law enforcement to accomplish their jobs. You vocally sided with lopsided views presented to you by the media, the politicians, the holy men of the city who take for themselves with both hands. You even complained that the police were in your way while using some of these facilities, never realizing the protection that was being provided for your safety. Now that your personel space has now been invaded you want action. Just clear the beast away, get these thugs out of your sight and do it now. Just round up the usual suspects. In the next few weeks my bosses will be telling you all of the same old tired dribble that they have been dishing out for years, "We are increasing patrols in the area", "we are adding more officers and special response teams into the area", and the curse to any on going police investigation, "We are forming a task force with federal authorities and will be assigning our brightest and best officers to the unit". Remember that our brightest and best have always been the ones with a phone call or high ranking family member or friend in charge of or influencing the selection process. You want to know what to do and how to support us. You have been told how over and over again but you chose not to. You made the situation that you are now in. Do you really think that any of us in law enforcement now beleive that you have or backs. Political correctness dosen't even allow us to identify the problem, how is it going to be solved if for this correctness we don't even know what the problem is? You want to change things, give a call to your politicians. Tell them to give us the legislation that we need for our protection. Give us a prosecutor and a prison system that will actually remove these thugs from our midst. Don't let all of the elected officials tell you that the problem is to big or to expensive to handle or it will just get worse. And after 35 years of doing this for you please allow me to leave with a thank you and the pension that I was promised and earned.

As I stated in a previous post, I was at the beach right before they closed it. It was becoming savage central. I saw no bike or walking units, only mounted. The mounted guys said 018 had only four officers to spare for the lakefront.

A couple of your guys were asking about CompStat in the NYPD. It began under Bratton with a guy named Jack Maple. The NYPD has 76 precincts (districts). Each C.O. is held accountable for crime stats.
I also watched a McCarthy interview on your local TV via SCC link. McCarthy was talking about (station) houses being divided into "A" houses (the highest violent crime), "B" houses (average) and "C" houses (slow). While I'm not familar with Chicago, certainly your Districts 7 and 11 are "A" houses.
Another CPD asked me in NYPD lingo, what is a "bus". A "bus" is an ambulance. (i.e., "7-3C to Central. We've got 2 shot at Mother Gaston and Pitkin. We need a couple of buses.")

It was either 003 or 021 in the tunnel @ 57th st beach. She was walking and there was an altercation then gunshots....she takes off running in opposite direction and was shot in the back of her head. The fucked up thing is I'm sure she went to the beach for the holiday and her family had to get this news. She died sometime yesterday or today. Recent grad from NIU. That's fucked up because this is someone that could've contributed positively to society but she loses her life and the bastard that shot her lives offering nothing but chaotic bullshit.
Your new top cop replied "None" when asked if there was any gang activity at North Avenue beach that led to the closing. Isn't it a bit too early for him to hide his head in the sand? One big difference between Chicago and every other city mentioned, there is some form of concealed carry. At least those folks have the opportunity to defend themselves against the animal population. I'm not sure that a crowded beach environment is the best place for a shootout but it would be nice to have the tools available to protect yourself and the family.

Letting people go is the policy of the dept and cook county, After an arrest a person by Supreme Court rulings can be held for 72 hours, then be charged in front of a judge for bond which will be for another day to processes (3 1/2 to 4 days) then even for misdemeanor offense a cash bond can be imposed and this offender can be held for 21 - 60 days till trial. Other places do this, but not here due to possible lawsuit pay outs dictated by policies, not by law. Imagine the felony process for misdemeanors. Hence, if this happened a new policy of misdemeanor review. Control of the streets in this town would happen if the county allowed the police to lock these offenders up for 2-4 days an arrest and must post a cash bond to make trial for misdemeanor offenses.
Ive been sued 17 times, been through the sos crap and have over 70 cr numbers in my career... guess what, im still here.. The difference is now that I still arrest people but do it by the book and do it 100 percent legit. in 5 years since I left sos and started doing everything legit ive gotten zero cr numbers and zero lawsuits... do your job right and you will be fine... if dude didnt do anything illegal then he doesnt go to jail... its pretty simple

Pretty honest of you to admit that the last 17 lawsuits and 90 cr #'s were picked up while you were on the BULLSHIT. Great to have you on-board with doing the right thing.
in the late 70's and 80's if there was a problem with "gang bangers" we were sent out to beat the crap out of them and send them home or to jail. Let the good citizens relax and have their fun folling the five minute clean-up. But now with all the cameras and cell phones,nobody wants to get caught. And who can blame them?

Hang on, I may be drunk but I don't know if I read this right. Coppers get indicted if they do something illegal. But you just STARTED DOING EVERYTHING LEGIT. How is it that anytime the police fuck up, usually takes about 30 sec, someone gets it on tape with a phone camera but no one got anything on tape during this whole episode at North Ave beach whick sounds like it lasted about 2-3 hrs. Nothing on you-tube, amazing !!!!!
In the past I would take my wife and daughter to the Taste of Chicago and we would enjoy a time together. Not this year! We will stay away from the lakefront and will find something else to do.

I made my share of arrests, both in quantity and quality. Sent people to prison. Used force. And I was never sued. Because I figured out how to do it legal and right right from the get-go.
You admit that you were what would be called a "rogue cop." Consider yourself VERY lucky that you are still employed and a free man.
I know your type: A big blow-hard that was always dragging someone in that needed medical clearance before he could hit the lockup.
And your brother officers have to contort their reports to cover you. And your supervisor is doing reams of paper on you that he would rather not be doing, because it is tedious and it can come back to bite HIM in the ass, too. Sergeants like people that DO work for them, not make work for them.
And co-workers are holding benefits for you.

Don't think you are out of the woods on those 70 CR's and lawsuits. The United States Department of Justice Civil Rights Division has a folder (more likely a file cabinet)with your name on it. As does the People's Law Office, Loevy & Loevy, and the Cook County State's Attorney. What is the Statute of Limitations of civil rights violations? 7 years?
And the attitude that if you are legal, you are OK is somewhat naive. If your incident gets enough bad media attention, you will be found guilty. Ever take a look at what sits on a jury in Cook County?
