Here Comes a Fight

Expect a Teachers' Strike if this keeps going this direction:
  • Chicago Public School principals late last week received long overdue budgets packing $10.6 million in school-based cuts — but also omitting a negotiated 4 percent raise for teachers.

The budgets arrived midday Friday with an e-mail from new Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard saying teacher raises weren’t included because they have yet to be approved by “newly appointed board members and they have not met yet. Therefore, we took a conservative approach and left out scheduled salary increases for now.’’

Although the Chicago Teachers Union is entering the last year of a contract calling for 4 percent raises this coming school year, CPS can bail out of the raises and reopen the contract if officials declare by June 15 that they don’t have the money to cover an estimated $80 million in CTU raises.

The schools are operating at a $634 million deficit. The City itself is running a $500 million budget gap at last count. That's $1.1 billion in the red already and the fiscal year is just starting. Rahm is going to burn this place to the ground trying to make up Shortshanks' budget disasters.

And what do we get for our money?

A 50% graduation rate overall with education standards for graduating H.S. seniors that barely have them reading and counting on their fingers.

NOT THE TEACHERS FAULT:

Garbage in, Garbage out!

Teachers should walk if they are not granted their most deserved pay raises. If anyone besides cops and firemen deserve a raise it is teachers. They have to baby sit these little creeps all day without a whip and gun. This Haitian phony must be put in his place from day one. You can look at this guy and see he is itching for a fight to gain the upper hand.

For years, we work without a CONTRACT. Finally, after a brutal wait and nasty process, we get a CONTRACT. Someone new, with a new idea comes along, and, suddenly our CONTRACT is a SUGGESTION?

Fill in the blank: it could be teachers, cops, firemen, paramedics, 911 dispatchers. Somebody went and rewrote the dictionary and dumped the very definition of CONTRACT.

It isn't just the bangers and the welfare cheats and the athlete dopers; society as a whole views boundaries and rules as nothing more than a suggestion. There is zero integrity out there in the world.

I can hardly understand what Brizard is saying half the time. Are there really NO qualified candidates to run departments in this city that we have to import them?????? What does that say about the city? Part of a progressive global city is the human capital it can provide--seriously, what does it say about the kind of leaders and workers this city produces?

And BTW, WHERE ARE RAHM'S KIDS GOING TO GO TO SCHOOL?????

And where IS HE living? In a billion dollar gold coast condo?

And oh yeah, no parenting, thug mentality culture, entitlements, etc.

Since most CPS students receive link and wick they should cut out all the free food the give them on top of the free money for food to save lots of $$$$$. CPS should only worry about education not human services. There is already $$$$ going to a human services department.

Why would you blame the teachers for the queality of the product they turn out. You as a P.O. should especially know better. When 14 year olds are having babies and sending them to school as ill prepared as they are how can you blame the teachers?
You know the old saying, Garbage In, Garbage Out!
How many times have you responded to a domestic at two o'clock in the morning and seen a seven year old up playing Play Station. If they go to school at all the next day how can you blame the teacher when the child doesn't learn.
All we hear about are flash mobs on Michigan Ave and wonder about where the parents are. Do you think the schools are any different.
I know working a beat car for 8 or 10 hours a day is tough. Try standing in front of a flash mob in a 90 degree classroom for six and a half hours and see what you turn out.
Remember, a lot of those teachers are husbands and wives of coppers so cut them a little slack.
Plus, a lot of teachers put their hearts and souls into their jobs.
This is from a guy who has been there on both sides.

This is probably going to hurt a lot of peoples ears/eyes but this country/city is in such horrible economic shape, there are MILLIONS and millions of people who would love to have a job at a fraction of the union wages and benefits and they would work there asses of doing it.

For the most part, the union employee is overpaid, coddled, out of touch, with a false sense of entitlement and Democrat (sucking off other peoples hard work and taxes paid).

The rest of us in the real world for the last 20+ years are tired of subsidizing this union BS.

The Unions fought against oppression in the beginning, now they are oppressing 85% of the non-union workers and the American economy.

With all the benefits:
A union prision barber...
A $150K/Yr PE or Driver's Ed teacher...
A Pension goosed to an extra $50K/year for six months work in the higher compensating position...
Multiple public pensions...
A $310,000 police superintendents salary...

Is insane and should have been stopped years ago and will in a matter if years because it is unsustainable.

Sorry, if the truth hurts.

Speaking of deficits...note to Toni:

Can you tell the taxpayers why in the Fifth District courthouse, the Bureau of Facilities Management Custodial Department leaves full color tent style business cards on every desk in every office to let office workers know who to call with any questions or comments (Joni at x 6531) when everyone in the building already knows who to call if there is a custodial problem thanks to the building directory?

Yes folks, full color tent cards printed on the best paper stock available, like it's the Ritz Carlton! This, while employees are walking around in the dark to save money on electricity.

I guarantee, if this were a private custodial company, they would have to find a much less expensive way to convey the same information because TAXPAYERS WEREN'T FOOTING THE BILL.

I'd like to know whose ego is behind this and what supervisor signed off on this grossly elaborate and unnecessary expense, because everyone is talking about it. And please don't blame the custodians, because someone in authority had to ok this useless and ridiculous idea.

................

I have to disagree with that statement. My children go to the local public Grade school and receive a better education now then when they went to the local Catholic school. The Teachers are great and the curriculum is hard.

The big difference between my school and those in other neighborhoods is PARENT involvement. You can have the finest teachers and schools but when you do not get parent backing and are unable to discipline students because the parents always take the kids side then the system will not work.

The teachers only have the kids so many hours a day. Parents need to step up and discipline their kids and make them do their homework.

This is like the recent "Heat" incident at North Ave beach. No one wants to acknowledge the elephant in the room and blame something else. In the CPS system it is the teachers that unfortunately get the blame, not the parents or student who deserve the blame.

Sane, respectable citizens would be appalled to know what goes on inside of CPS schools because of the culture the children come from at home. Beyond morally shocking and could put tabloids to shame.

Teachers are prisoners in those buildings. The kids are literally animals.

Even though Rahm has inherited a huge steaming pile of shit from Shortshanks Rahm will never even so much as criticize Shanks. Why doesn’t Rahm call it like it is and admit that the last mayor royally fucked this city up?
He also should either pull Shanks security detail or give Shanks the option of paying for it himself. This prick has picked up several very well paying jobs to supplement his $185,000 a year pension. Combined he’s pulling in at least $400k and he’s still got over a million in campaign funds Why on earth should the city be on the hook for the $700K plus for Shanks to have servants/bodyguards and city paid for vehicles and gas? Might I also say no other former mayor has gotten any type of security whatsoever upon leaving office.
Come on Rahm you’ve been put in a very bad position why not take the kid gloves off regarding Shortshanks?

Overpaid!

Have you been hanging out and smoking with the "Honor students"?

In CPS we work our rears off. We have excellent curriculum, and courses. But guess what? Einstein! If the child is staying up all night playing video games, or is sent by momma to deal dope and crack, steal cells, etc. They aren't there to learn. Parenting, parenting, parenting!

Why do we stay with CPS? The money!

At a Catholic school you've got great kids, but you work for the grace of God. Prayers can't pay my mortgage.

To the idiot who "has been working in the real world for the past twenty years." You've been on the blog before and haven't gotten the hint, no one here believes one bit of your bullshit. 1)Do you get shot, burned up or fall through a collapsed roof with your real job? No: the most danger you face every day is carpal tunnel syndrome from your keyboard 2) Are you responsible for the education and safety of anywhere from 150-200 children that are not yours every day? No: You have probably been too focused on your real job to notice that your kids aren't doing their homework, are drinking and drugging, and don't have the patience to be with them for more than ten minutes. 3) Do you have to build or create anything using your hands at your real job? Being able to decide what goes in the credit or debit column at your real job might be worthy of that 20% bonus you got while my union had to fight for a Cost of Living Allowance 0f 1-4%, but you don't know what end of a hammer to hold and are too self absorbed to realize that these jobs cause alot of injuries and take a toll on the body physically. And finally, if the "real world" were to collapse you would starve to death because you are too smart to know how to farm, build or hunt and my family and I would survive. Get over yourself already, you are one of 6billion people on earth and the world will still spin without you.

I love the people who say how easy it is to be a teacher and would love to have such a "cushy" job. You must be thinking of schools in the 70s. Even people with a college degree in Ed. leave this career at incredibly high rates - but, oh sure, lots of people would love to be teachers. You know what ... GO AHEAD ! Get certified and try it , especially in the inner city schools. When you have to put up with kids who miss 1-2 days of school EVERY week, never do homework, no adult ever comes to pick up their grades, swear at you, and maybe even hit you - THEN tell me how much you love to be a teacher in Chicago and how EASY it is ! And don't forget how overpaid you will be !
