- Former Mayor Richard Daley is taking advantage of his long political career by joining an international law firm that hopes to tap his expertise and connections as someone known for leasing public assets and developing ties with China.
The announcement Wednesday by Katten Muchin Rosenman, which did legal work for the city during Daley's tenure, ended speculation about Daley's main post-mayoral job.
"He is 'of counsel,' so that will allow him to work on other projects," said Jacquelyn Heard, Daley's longtime spokeswoman. "He won't have to work exclusively for Katten."
Daley also is coordinating an urban lecture series at the University of Chicago as a "distinguished senior fellow" at an undisclosed salary, has signed up for a speaker's bureau to give talks that could fetch tens of thousands of dollars a pop and has set up a Gold Coast office for projects he hasn't revealed.
Exactly how much he'll get paid for all that is not clear, but he's likely to eclipse the $216,000 or so he made as mayor.
Gee, can we get the two cars and five coppers back from him now? He seems more than able to hire his own security and buy his own vehicles and fill them with gas now. And don't forget the city stickers Dick.
It's also amusing how Rahm signed some executive order forbidding anyone in his administration from taking lobbying work with firms that do business with the city for two years after leaving his cabinet, but here's Shortshanks doing exactly that within a month of leaving office. Seems someone doesn't really care about the impression he's making.

He's a proposal for Ritchie and Alderman Ed Burke. You guys need to get in the boat. You need to make concessions like the rest of us. Times are tough economically right now for the City of Chicago. The City of Chicago is suffering from a $550 million dollar budget shortfall. So here's what you can do to help out. Pay for you own cars, bodyguards, chauffeurs, errand boy's and flunkies with your Campaign War Chest, Daley $1.2 million and Burke $8.1 million, that we the citizens of Chicago have paid for one way or the other (you know how things work in Chicago). We know that both of you are deeply concerned with the economic situation, fiscal viability and future of the Great City of Chicago. This little gesture on you part will be greatly appreciated by the citizens of Chicago and would be part of your legacy. Reminds me of a story someone emailed to me last year. An upper middle class female attending the Univershity of Champaign ur bandana had been brainwashed by the liberal pot smoking professors there and she brought their rhetoric home to dad every summer. She constantly berated her father for not giving more to the ACLU, Acorn and similar charities. She also berated him for not volunteering more of his time to help underprivileged people. The wise father asked his daughter how she was doing with her classes. The daughter proudly replied that she had a 4.40 gpa out of 4.50. The father then asked her how's your friend Amy doing? The daughter was taken aback as to why her father was asking about Amy. She then proceeded to ramble on about Amy and how she was one of the most popular girls on campus. Never missed a party, and missed most of her classes and the one's she attended she was drunk from the night before. She was just on big party girl wasting her parent's money. Her father then asked about Amy's grades and his daughter replied she's barely hanging on to a 2.0 gpa. The father in his infinite wisdom the said to his daughter, why don't you go to the deans office and give Amy just 1.00 of your 4.40gpa, you can afford it and she needs help. That would bring you down to a 3.40 and Amy up to a 3.0 gpa to almost equal gpa’s. The daughter became furious and went off on her father in a diatribe stating; how is fair and why would I even consider such a moronic thing. She is a party animal and almost never goes to class and sleeps all day. College to her is just one big party. I study at least 6 hours every day including weekends and never have time to go out to parties or enjoy myself because I’m way too busy working to keep my almost perfect GPA. The father then looked at his daughter and said judging from your answer I believe that I will not have to entertain anymore conversations about donating more of my time or money to charities and also WELCOME TO THE REPUBLICAN PARTY.

Of counsel is a spot for pol's and retired partners. They collect a salary and just make the roster look sexy. They rarely do legal work. The law firm I worked for before doing This, had R. Newton Minow as of counsel.
Do you think they know that Daley had to take the bar exam three times? I guess they are not hiring Daley for his keen legal mind.

Isn't there a rule that states that once you leave the employ of the city, you cannot work for anyone who has a city contract? I believe you have have to wait 1 year before that can happen.

2-156-100. Post‑Employment Restrictions.
(a) No former official or employee shall assist or represent any person other than the City in any judicial or administrative proceeding involving the City or any of its agencies, if the official or employee was counsel of record or participated personally and substantially in the proceeding during his term of office or employment.
(b) No former official or employee shall, for a period of one year after the termination of the official's or employee's term of office or employment, assist or represent any person in any business transaction involving the City or any of its agencies, if the official or employee participated personally and substantially in the subject matter of the transaction during his term of office or employment; provided, that if the official or employee exercised contract management authority with respect to a contract this prohibition shall be permanent as to that contract. (Prior Code §26.2‑10)
As the former Mayor, I believe he fulfills this description.

This guy is the ultimate dirtbag! Not only does he get a $180,000 pension, now he is locking up several high paying jobs too. But, he still needs to get tax payer vehicles and police bodyguards for what reason I have no idea. Probably just to look like a big shot. With all this money one would hink he could pay for his own bodyguards not the taxpayer.

Hey, Daley was just a short timer with his 22 years. I worked for nearly 30 yrs and I'll bet I had more threats against my life in my first 6 months than he had his entire time as mayor.

Look at the frightening picture, the University of Chicago's symbolic "risen from the flames" phoenix emblem behind Daley. He really does look like the Devil himself, vicious, fireproof against any and all circumstances of life, laughing his head off at us all -- is he 45 or 95? It doesn't much matter with the power-mad.
