Rahm "Concerned"

Maybe that should read "terrified"?
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel today said he's concerned by the Car Care World Expo's decision not to come to McCormick Place and pledged to be aggressive in trying to keep costs down at the lakefront convention center.

Emanuel said the trade show's decision is not necessarily an indication the McCormick Place reforms passed by the General Assembly last year have to be reworked, but more that a federal court case over that piece of legislation has to be settled so that trade shows have certainty about what their costs will be if they come to Chicago.
McCormick Place, like the airports, is an "economic engine." And if the engine isn't running on all cylinders, neither is the city or anything else for that matter. McCormick Place is one cylinder. Air travel is another. Tourism is a third. All three of those are in serious trouble and who knows how many others haven't been maintained or tuned up in years.

This is also an article to read:
  • Motorola Solutions will add 400 jobs in Chicago by end of 2012, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced today.

The jobs will be new positions in service, sales support and other areas, Motorola President and CEO Greg Brown said at a downtown news conference with the mayor.

[...] Motorola received no tax incentives as part of the deal, Emanuel said.

Spokesman Nicholas Sweers said the company has not yet determined how many of the 400 positions will be new and how many will involve relocating workers from elsewhere. But he said the relocated workers will come "primarily from outside the greater Chicago area."
"No tax incentives from Chicago" they mean because we're pretty sure they got a few dozen millions from Quinn a little while ago.

So an unknown portion of workers will be "relocated" from other parts of the country, meaning it isn't truly 400 jobs unless you're using the new "Rahm-math" method of accounting. And the jobs are in the "service, sales support and other areas," which means they can be outsourced in a matter of minutes once the cost of doing business here exceeds the amount of cash that can be gotten from taxpayers.

Corporations have Zillions of dollars put away from less employees doing the work of all those laid off. No benefits to worry about. And we now have government "paying" them to stay in their area. Sounds like extortion to me. Wonder how many politicians get jobs for their kids and relatives with these deals.

The city rapes these shows with the tremendous cost expense to rent space and then they charge the shit out of them for power and water run to the boothes. If they want soft drinks a case is about $200.00. But they always blame labor.

For ALL the money Motorola is going to get from Illinois for some tax incentives, they can get some token employees in Chicago to make it look like they are doing something for the state.

What about money to all the other corporations? Instead of giving away 100s of Millions of dollars to a few corporations why not just not institute the tax in the first place?

And to ALL the union protestors who walked around the Corporate Conference at the Chicago Hyatt yesterday to protest Corporate leaders for not creating jobs in Illinois but getting $100 of millions -

WAKE UP - the guy you elected --> Quinn, cut that deal to appease some corporations not to leave the sorry state.

Whatever tax revenues this corporate tax should have generated - he has thrown it all out as "incentives" for a few companies to stay. Why not create a "tax-free" climate?? We would have already saved the $300-$500 MILLION that Quinn gave away.

Quinn should be recalled.

The trade unions have had it good for many years . The tradesman do not even need an A card to work at McCormick Place, just an A permit and they can make top dollar, an amount set by the union for those working in private industry and subject to layoffs. The unions will be the death of McCormick Place and trade shows in this town. These are all clout jobs.

Slightly off topic:
We are budgeted for 13,500 officers yet we haven't had that kind of manpower in many years. Where has that budgeted money gone year after year?
How about transparency Rahm? Where has all that money gone and where does it continue to go?
We need journalists and the public to demand an answer to this question. After all the politicians are pissing on our heads and telling us it's raining.

With those 400 new jobs, come 400 citizens. Will the City have enough police to protect them?
Motorola, after getting JellyQuinn's tax blessing to remain in suburban ILLinois, also dropped millions of dollars for a new corporate center in Malaysia. They couldn't possibly built here.
The CME also stated they're thinking about bailing, & RahmShanks is doubting, they're concern about ILLinois is that lawmakers haven't got their act together to fix the pension problems here, instead overtax business and residents.
The mayor seems as concerned as The Messiah.
The Teachers won't be getting their contract 4% raise, don't count on any favors for our contract. How's that for concern.
Any wisdom coming from Daley & Son Inc. LLC, the entrepreneurial wizards of Michigan Avenue?

"Motorola Solutions will add 400 jobs in Chicago by end of 2012..."

They're re-invented themselves by adding the word "Solutions" to their name! How many millions of dollars will that cost in new artwork, letterheads, signs, etc.?

I actually saw a shoe store calling itself "Footwear Solutions."

"The jobs will be new positions in service, sales support and other areas..."

...none of which produce anything.

And now him and his boy jean claude voted not to give teachers the raises agreed to in their contract because they can't afford them and they were agreed to under a different administration....does this mean he can ignore the contracts of police, fire and everyone else in the city cause they were agreed to by another administration???? He dared them to strike but knows Quinns bill yesterday make it harder for them to strike and easier to fire....typical chicago....beat the working man into submission...i don t see him jean claude or gerry giving back part of $200,000 plus salaries to help the public....

"Hey, my wife has been unemployed for the past two years. When are these jag-off politicians going to create some real jobs...."

They'll never admit that real jobs aren't created by power-trippers like themselves running around handing out favors, otherwise known as crony capitalism. What an honest politician would do is back off, treat all businesses equally, let up on the tax rates, let the free market work its magic and then the jobs would start being added and more taxes would come rolling in.

But that might make it look like we don't need them so much.
