Tourist Shot

What WBBM Newsradio called a "drive-along" shooting:
  • A vehicle was hit by gunfire on North Lake Shore Drive early this morning, wounding one of the people inside, police said.

The vehicle was traveling south at 150 N. Lake Shore Dr. at 3:40 a.m. when the three occupants heard shots, said Police News Affairs [....]

Police found bullet holes in the vehicle -- which was a rental -- and windows shattered. The shots apparently came from a dark-colored SUV....

[....]A 42-year-old Oklahoma man in the vehicle was wounded in the buttocks, Kubiak said. He was taken to Rush University Medical Center, where he was treated and released. It was not clear if he was the driver or a passenger.
The Tribune immediately closed all comments on this article, citing "heat" as the reason.

Rahm is saying he is providing every tourist a souvenir, in this case a bullet. How thoughtful. Never leave a crisis go to waste.

What ever happened to fair and impartial journalism ? The "Fib-une" needs to quit wasting dead trees and close the doors.

I think what's ridiculous is the Tribune closing the comment board for violations of their comments rules. What are they afraid of? Equally silly is that you need to "sign up" before posting. I went to the Sun-Times and I need to "sign up". Thank-you SSC for not making me "sign up". lol

Pretty much every story that is about crime in the downtown area has it's comments disabled and the following at the bottom:

"The board for this story has been closed because of excessive violations of the Tribune's comment policies. Details of those policies are described below."

They aren't even allowing comments from the beginning. How is anyone violating policies?

Seems to me the Oklahoma news outlets will have a field day with this story and the whole state will probably decide Chicago is not a viable tourist destination.

Hogtie your police and this is what happens. Open thuggery with no fear of law enforcement is now normal in Chicago.

Those were not bullets. They were pieces of residue from a solar flare that concentrate on the microclimate along the lake and are most intense near North Avenue and Oak Street beaches.

If you believe you see roving packs of thugs and gang bangers, don't be concerned. It's merely a mirage. Just keep thinking nice thoughts and all will be well. You must hydrate with bottled water you pay and extra dime for.

We have a great leader to guide us after the last great leader. All hail Rahm! Let the papers sing his praises!

A man from Oklahoma, employed family man, was arrested last week for trying to board a plane with a handgun at Ohare, he said it was his first time in Chicago and "wasn't sure how safe it was".
The Trib posted the mughot of a guy arrested at Ohare Airport, all he was doing was trying to protect his family while visiting Chicago, only to be too lazy to declare is weapon in his checked baggage.
He was due in felony court this week.
Now, how ironic some 'tourist' from OK gets shot up here, right in the heart of scenic Lake Shore Drive.
But then again, I don't know the particulars on this 'tourist' who was shot at 3-4 in the morning....no good could come from being out that late in the dark. Usually drive-bys are reserved for certain somebodies, returning to do their certain somethings, that certain so and so's don't like.
So I ask, who was the guy who was shot?
Anyone know about the 'tourist' ???

A tourist from North of the Border here.

What a great blog. I almost forgot what the truth sounded like.

I was in Chicago on a vacation last year but didn't find this blog until after we returned home.

While there on the Mag Mile I commented to my wife, ‘where are the police?’ I am not kidding when I say I saw 4 police cars in 2 days downtown. 'There's one. Oh it's just a cab.'

In New York they were everywhere. Granted, they were not giving much more than a passing interest to what was happening on the street, but they were visible nonetheless. As a middle school teacher I know visibility cuts down on 75% of 'incidents'. When the cats away the mice will play.

People are mentioning the tourist publications getting hold of the Wilding phenomenon. Maybe that will get the higher ups to notice when the tourist/conference dollars take a hit.

Loved the city but will certainly think twice before going again.

Sorry to ramble, but one more point. After reading the comments here I am truly convinced that 10 of the top posters here could clean up the Police force and the city in months time. Give them carte blanche to take out the 'trash' and the city would be reborn.

But it has always been this way. The common man does his job and takes his orders from a bunch of upwardly mobile sociopaths who care little about anyone else but their own power. The common good? What is that?

PS Anyone watch The Wire on HBO? From what I read here about city politics, The Rev's, the police and stats, it sure seems accurate.

Haven't read the case report. I am afraid to pull it up for fear of retribution. So, as a Chicago Police Officer, I have to remain in the dark as to the specifics of this case.

....but it does sound suspicious.

Can someone tell me that the person shot at was a totally innocent bystander?

As for the Fibune closing the comments after the latest robbery: They had to. The comments are getting too honest. Because the public is completely fed up with this BS.

Third World America 2011: Forget "Fast Tracking To Anarchy" We've Arrived

This year, all hell has broken loose in downtown Chicago. Years of under-hiring have resulted in a police force that is unprepared for wildings and gang violence. Moreover, concealed carry in Chicago is illegal, unless one follows the Constitution.

Tourists and residents have been attacked by mobs of youths on buses, on beaches, on bicycle paths, near the shops of the Magnificent Mile, and outside their homes. Mobs of shoplifters plagued "Mug Mile" stores. The irony is that these disenfranchised youths are turning to crime -- and if justice is done, prison sentences --a gainst innocent targets. Their focus is misdirected. Participating in a peaceful five million man march -- a true show of force and power -- against elected culprits in Washington would get them better results for lasting change.

Sounds a bit off to me. Being from Oklahoma doesn't necessarily make him a tourist.

If this was a law-abiding Joe in town from Muskogee, minding his own business, this would be a bigger story

It was likely someone for whom this sort of trouble is not unusual or unprecedented.

Here in Portland Oregon the same type of thing has been happening for the past few years. Gang violence and shootings have been flaring up (although nothing like Chicago) - the local paper suppresses the suspect information. And we all know why. People complain on the news blogs - paper shuts down comments. People everywhere are waking up to what's going on and the media is trying to keep it quiet.

Bullshit. A bullet will go through a door and into your ass. Don't use them for cover. Engine block or wheel are only cover on a car. Look up DEA test results.

You better study harder for detective my friend.

Spare me the disbanding of MSF and TRU is the reason why the homicides are up. Those officers were all assigned to the same districts where they were deployed anyway. The only conclusion you could come to is that the said officers are dogging it because they are pissed off. Who gives a fuck what the homicide total of the city is anyway? Very few "innocents" are murdered and usually it is a crime of passion/domestic related so it wouldn't matter if you had 26,000 police on the streets you would stil get those homicides. I felt safer in this city in the early 90's when there were almost twice the homicides, but probably not as many shootings. Protect the front lines so decent people don't leave. Do what you can in the ghetto, but most importantly go home alive.
