CHICAGO—Police here are girding for another weekend of "flash mob" attacks after arresting 29 people in connection with a recent rash of assaults and robberies in and around the city's tony shopping and dining district.
Twelve crimes involving large groups of young men were reported last weekend, in addition to others earlier this spring. The incidents are some of the first major problems confronting newly appointed Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy.
The attacks have received wide attention in Chicago because they have occurred around the city's affluent north side, including near the "Magnificent Mile," a Michigan Avenue strip popular with tourists.
Word from City Hall is Rahm just shit a brick. But good news! The weather looks to cooperate for the next few days. Maybe Chicago will catch a break - the next heat wave doesn't hit until Tuesday.

From what i saw everything went great and the po's are going to be fine.
A few great union questions though:

Frank D did a great job in running through everything with the officers. Funny part of the whole night was that the campaign promise of all field reps do is ordered pizza is still up and running. Got to laugh when remembering Gorman saying thats all they do and do not protect you in shootings yet he was not there to protect the pi and they are still ordering pizza. No compkaints here though because the pizza was good and then night turned out good for the police

Remember the movie Jaws when Mayor Vaughn scolded anyone who dared alert the public of the shark predator for fear of disrupting business and profits. I immediately thought of that when I saw our Mayor admonish the media over their coverage of these brutal attacks.

Did anyone see the Billy Corgan assault/theft story on the Trib? Wonderful details on the clothing worn by the assailants - but that was it. Truly helpful if these folks never change their clothes. When people say this thug activity is just the "tip of the iceberg", I think they're exactly right. Can any of you imagine the anarchy and looting if the city were to experience a natural disaster, terrorist attack or citywide blackout? Although I think the Japanese civility thing with their citizens forming neat, orderly lines for food and supplies is overblown, I'll take even a small fraction of that behavior over what I think would really happen here.

So now they will get chased out of downtown; so what is their next step.
They may go out into neighborhoods served by CTA lines which make for good escapes. Districts like 016, 014 and 008 and even close in suburbs could see flashmob violence on their main shopping streets. People will call the police quickly but will there be enough blueshirts to respond.
I'd love to see them make an attack victims on a couple of streets I know where some bars would empty out and using anything at hand the patrons would subdue the mob and no one would see nothing.

I've been harping on this issue for years. Thanks, I'm glad I'm not the only one. Why is it such a big secret?
I hope other po's will do the same and ask FOP to make this a 2012 Contract issue to post scores and ranking of Detective promotional exams. Cpt, Lt & Sgt unions will also have to comply.

My daughter teaches English in Japan. She told me how amazed she was that there was no looting, no groups of people breaking into stores, etc.... and people stayed in a single line for 8 to 14 hours to obtain basic supplies like water, medicine, food, etc...

It all has to do with the bottom line of profits and the survival of the power structure.
