Here's $5 Million

Spend it wisely. In fact, spend it on people who already make over $100,000 a year!
  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday will establish a $5 million fund to provide merit pay to Chicago Public School principals.

Emanuel said he has “put together” a $5 million fund to reward the best-performing principals, with details to follow at an afternoon news conference.

But the mayor campaigned on a promise to deliver merit pay for principals and he’s about to check it off his list of accomplishments during his first 100 days in office.

Nothing for the actual people who make the principals look good - those people aren't even able to collect a negotiated raise. And since it's money that was donated by private citizens, Rahm is claiming another "check mark" on his campaign promises.
  • The $5 million over five years is coming from four wealthy Chicago families. Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner and his wife, Diana, are contributing $2 million. Three other families are each giving $1 million: Groupon co-founder and executive chairman Eric Lefkofsky and his wife, Liz; Penny Pritzker and her husband, Chicago Park Board president Bryan Traubert and Paul and Mary Finnegan.
Our first thought is that these folks are buying access to Rahm's political future by enabling him to fulfill a campaign promise without raiding the empty city coffers.

Bonuses for government work is a bad idea, no matter where the money comes from.

Wow, yes a good principal can make a difference, but hard to quantify.

The money should be going to the new teachers to keep the good ones from fleeing the cesspool of the CPS.

But, as mentioned, why are private donations being used to reward public employees?

This will solve nothing, only encourage cheating. Don't they open the papers and read about the Atlanta case and other urban cities where the teachers and principals are cheating and changing the tests papers of students to bring up the tests scores. The scandal just occured a few weeks ago. I cant believe they learned nothing from this, but basically are saying if the tests scores are up, you get a big bonus. What would you do?

USA TODAY last March examined standardized test scores at District of Columbia schools and found 103 public schools with high erasure rates on penciled-in answer sheets. An investigation is underway.

USA TODAY also found evidence of test tampering in six states besides Georgia and Maryland, including California, Florida and Ohio.

LETS ADD CHICAGO to the list

8/16/2011 01:34:00 AM

The wreckage is still burning. A 413-page report by special investigators for the Georgia governor’s office that was released to the public on July 5 recounted in stunning detail how elementary- and middle-school teachers and administrators throughout the Atlanta public school system manipulated students’ answers on the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test, Georgia’s method of gauging student achievement and complying with the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

The most egregious cheating included principals overseeing social gatherings in which answers were erased and corrected. At Toomer, in the residential Kirkwood neighborhood east of downtown, the report claimed that some teachers either told students the answers or suggested them with voice inflection during testing.

Do you think giving cash bonus to principals would encourage this in Chicago

8/16/2011 01:37:00 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sure, the principals will just pressure their teachers to cheat on the tests so that the uneducated kids look good. That is exactly what happened in 2009 when the U.S. Department of Education was throwing bonus money around from the Obama stimulus funds.

I am sure the local press will be happy to herald the improved test scores without ever wondering how they were accomplished.

We’ve seen this kind’a bullshit before haven’t we. I think a better motivation would be to fire the bastards if their students don’t learn.

Oh no, we can’t have that can we !

OFF TOPIC:

Rahm is looking at settling all the remaining Flint Taylor lawsuits with regards to the Burge years to get Daley off the hook with the impending depositions.

Flint Taylor remarked in essence that the city should settle because its been proven that Burge & Crew tortured black suspects.

TRUTH: The only thing proven, was that if the FEDS want to nail you to a cross, they charge you with Lying to them. Burge said he didn't torture, FEDS said he did based on the testimony of a bunch of career criminal's that were coached by Northwestern law students.

All bullshit!

Penny Pritzker was both CEO of a failed bank with questionable Pritzker family involvement (and removal of assets prior to failure similar to Broadway Bank) and actively participated/colluded in the inheritance defrauding of two underage Pritzker heirs. Both instances covered by local media, and yet Ms Pritzker continues to be regarded as a viable political figure (CPS board member, chairman of Obama finance committee, etc) despite these two signficant ethical transgressions.

Chicago tolerates corruption, and its political establishment and "high society" too. Pritzker family history is documented in Gus Russo's "Supermob" book - an excellent read addresses Chicago's political-business-mob network.

Too much self-interested Pritzker family control over Chicago business and politics for too many decades.

That is what the mayor wants to do now that his mentor da Mayor Daley lost his court case to stay out of this manufactured mess. How nice of Rahm to "get this thing behind us". Does this also mean that Daley will be off the hook now with all the lawsuits settled by the city? My best guess is YES. Seems odd Rahm would decide to settle all these bogus cases right after Daley may be held accountable for his own actions. By the way attorney Flint "I get 40% of all this bribe money from these sorry mutts" Taylor also wants an apology from the mayor and city for his "torture" victims.

What do you want to bet that charter school principals will be collecting the cash? Daley loved em, and looks like Rahm does too. Of course charter schools look successful on a quick glance -- they can kick out the assholes and they have parents who care, at least a little but, about their kids' education. But their test scores are essentially no different than any other school, save the magnets. Charter schools are staffed by just-out-of-college save-the-worlders who leave for the suburbs once they have kids of their own. Or they go work for the Board of Ed, congratulating each other about their excellent ideas and fantastic meetings while at the regular schools, the 12 year-olds are having kids, students are repeating classes 3 and even 4 times on taxpayers' dime because they won't do homework, angry parents threaten teachers regularly during conferences -- when they show up, and many seniors can't read at a 5th grade level.

Heat wave threatens elderly in remote towns

By SEAN MURPHY - Associated Press | AP – Mon, Aug 1, 2011

"It's been over 100 for more than 30 days in a row in many parts of Oklahoma. In the town of Altus, the average high in June — when the weather is normally mild — was 105. In the many dozens of rural communities like Mulhall, where there are no longer any stores or other services, the elderly must drive other places for almost everything, and that has become daunting this summer.

"We go into plenty of areas where there's not even a service station, no drug store, no grocery stores," said Marlene Snow, who delivers meals to elderly residents as the project director of the Logan County Areawide Aging Agency. "Most of them don't want to go out. They don't have the energy."

"Spend it wisely. In fact, spend it on people who already make over $100,000 a year!"

The phrases "good works" and "worthy causes" certainly have been redefined here.

As the old Appalachian fellow bleakly observed, "Them as has, gits."

Truer words were never spoken. Many people involved in "charities" have this stink about them anyway. I am aware of one situation in which --

A. A poor man harvested food which would otherwise have been left to rot, with the simple, earnest intention that a friend would save a little money, and would enjoy the food over the fall and winter.

B. The Mistress Of The House immediately confiscated (Yes! That is the very word. Imagine it!) the food, loaded it all into her station wagon, and drove it straightaway to the very next meeting of her Club, where it was ostentatiously distributed to affluent people who had no need of it.

C. Thus were the ladies of the Club impressed for a brief, shining moment. -- the ones who were not laughing up their sleeves, that is.

D. It is probably needless to say that "Thus was the Mistress indelibly branded with the words 'Grasping, Artificial Scum' across her forehead."

I like to think that there is a special place in Hell for people like this -- perhaps the same bank of Satanic ovens at which the Daleys will eternally labor, raking out white-hot coke with a fifteen-foot-long steel hook and retching up the fumes and tar.

Have a nice life.

P.S. I am still laughing about the "Groupon" guy and his overnight millions. Is that like a "proton" or "neutron," some conglomeration of particles belonging to other people that is magically arranged in midair just long enough for money to fall out?

All as insubstantial as the work of the juggler with the six plates spinning and a ball balanced on his nose...

"$159,000" condos now at $66,000 and still no takers...

I am terrified. This economy has a LONG way left to fall.

the proper terminology is Non-Merit, when referring to Crookago hiring and promotion, etc. Non-Merit = Patronage, which is what it really is, not promotion based on exceptional past performance, etc.

"The $5 million over five years is coming from four wealthy Chicago families. Venture capitalist Bruce Rauner and his wife, Diana, are contributing $2 million. Three other families are each giving $1 million: Groupon co-founder and executive chairman Eric Lefkofsky and his wife, Liz; Penny Pritzker and her husband, Chicago Park Board president Bryan Traubert and Paul and Mary Finnegan."

Look at the vast power being wielded by the unelected -- who can simply buy their way in the door.

INFLUENCE PEDDLING.

...and you thought Daley was bad.

What a whore this Emanuel is.

FOR SALE.

SCC the next time I get pulled over for a traffic violation can I make a private incentive reward to that officer for being observant of my errant driving skills? Seems there is a precedent with private citizens offering incentives to other public employees. BTW could the command staff ask the new Sup. what would be an appropriate reward? How often can the public shower officers with cash?

The young officers in 025 3rd watch are getting antsy. It looks like Captian ****ASS will dump most of them to 1st watch. Most of them don't have enough time to make the bid but work hard and bring in good numbers. This is the thanks they get?

Looks like Daley will pull another fast one to stay away from the bogus Burge torture cases. Rahm is nickle and diming city employees and laying scores off becasue the city is in such bad financial shape. Things sure do look bleak according to the mayor. Now he comes along and wants to "settle" all the Burge lawsuits to "get this chapter behind us". Sure mayor. What you are really doing is getting Daley off the hook so he won't be deposed to find out why he was sleeping at the switch as Crook County States Attorney. Daley has never wanted to know what was going on anywhere he worked. Now Rahm will spend countless millions to low life extortionist attorney Flint Taylor just to have him crawl back under his rock and keep quiet. The taxpayers will again pay the bill for Daley. And I bet he keeps his bodyguards and cars. Bet on it!

"Do most people even realize that there is a huge movement among the wealthiest Americans to convert public schools into private schools via "charter schools". The Walton family (Sam Walton of Wal Mart) got started and other very wealthy Americans have joined this "cause". They want to convert public schools to charter schools and then slowly convert them to private schools."

--8/16/2011 07:35:00 AM

This can be seen right here in Chicago; it is also a tremendous power grab by the "Hispanic" "liberation theology" (i.e., Communist) invaders. I have photos of the Che Guevara flag being carried in street rallies at the charter school/church combo by Grand/Austin, 025.

They also somehow acquired a huge former bakery on West 47th and converted it from this former productive use into a "charter school," probably with tax money somehow.

Hell, some public schools here fly Mexican flags...

I don't get why all the blame for horrible schools goes to the teachers and principals - why not look where most of all blame belongs - in the home and parenting (or lack thereof).

You sir, have hit the nail on the head. You could send all these ghetto rats to the Latin School with Rahm's kids, and you'd get the same result as if you sent them to a school on the west side.

No parenting/lack of structure/bust-out baby-mamas and missing fathers are the problem.

You could throw a trillion dollars at the schools, but until these kids get some decent parents, forget it--vicious circle.

The same can be said for the CPD. They received a raise despite a lack of quality of service. 19P ain't that hard. Try teaching 30 public school studnets 8 hours a day without any help or support. Your turn is next. Rahm will attack every union in this city. So pucker up baby!

8/16/2011 12:57:00 PM

We already had our turn fuckhead. When was the last time the teachers union got a 1% raise? That's what I thought. CPD has been reducing crime with less resources for years while CPS fails at every level.

On the face of it, the Pritzkers and friends just bought five milion dollars worth of jiggered test scores.

'Course the principal want him a new car. Quickest, easiest way to get it is (fill in blank).

Idiots.

This is Chicago.

Do they actually "leave canned goods out for the mailman to collect for the Big Food Drive" too?

No, no. It can't be naivete'.

I am a principal in the city. I do not want any of that money; I would just like to see a raise. We have not received one in the last 3 years and just said we all need to do our part in making the budget balance. Most teachers make more hourly than administrators in the city do. We do this job because we love the kids!!

You want to save CPS some money? How about getting rid of some of these asshole principals that are crazy as a shithouse rat. One in particular reigns at a high school near 25. Then get rid of these jerkoffs that retire from CPS and come back as "consultants" or whatever they call themselves these days. My idea is that if you are retired, that's it. You come back for any reason at all the pension ends, you go back on the books, at starting salary and in the classroom. But that's my opinion.
