CFD Scandal
Fool the city once, shame on them. Fool them twice after being warned not to do it again, well, you can't fix stupid:
- Four firefighters will be dismissed and placed on the city’s do-not-hire list for padding their mileage reports, Chicago Fire Department Commissioner Robert Hoff said today.
- Hoff decided to give 43 of the other firefighters, who had “otherwise clean disciplinary records,” unpaid suspensions ranging from 30 to 60 days. A 30-day suspension equates to an average out-of-pocket loss of approximately $6,000.
Six other firefighters who were investigated chose to retire. One person is on vacation through the end of the month, which is when their disciplinary action will be decided.
The city’s legal department will look at the cases to figure out whether the city can recoup the money.
The four firefighters who were let go previously were fired in 2008 for accepting or facilitating cash payments in exchange for making weekend pump inspections at high-rises. The inspectors got their jobs back after their cases went through arbitration, but were told if they had another infraction they would be terminated,...
Another bit of ammo for Rahm to use once their contract comes up.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been mentioned in the comments. CFD Headquarters is moving from the IIT Tower building to 3510 S. Michigan. Fire Department brass finalized the deal with the Supt. this week. CPD HQ will be renamed "Chicago Public Safety Headquarters."

Great move! Now if you really want to save the city some money, move City Hall to some abandoned building in Englewood and make the current City Hall a homeless shelter.

Is that 30-60 work days or beginning to end of the suspension? If it's work days they'll be off for a year or two. If it's total time off they'll only be gone for a tour if they hook it up with one of their 3 furloughs.
Be a fire man and you get paid to sleep and eat. Be a police man and you'll get fire for sleeping and get an unpaid 30 minute lunch. Total bullshit.
Fireman steals he gets fired or suspended. Policeman steals he goes to jail. Even the States Attornies office loves firemen.

Rahm should send dinner gift cards to the retired officer who made this suggestion! Reward those offering ideas to reduce the budget!
It makes sense , save money for our next pay raise .
When you have 115 people in a department and 54 of them are stealing from you it is not a good thing. It seems like a huge supervision issue as much as anything else and the FD brass ought to be really pissed at the people who are supposed to be supervising these clowns.

Sure they can give a slap on the wrist to the sacred cow CFD. If Cpd were involved they would be at the States atty, the Feebs, Interpol, etc,, trying to get criminal charges. Oh darn , it costs too much to fire them. They certainly find the money to try and fire the current 40 officers at the Police Board. I cant beleive the media isnt biting on this crap.

What a deal. These firefighters not only had a cushy job with straignt days, they embezzeled over 100 grand in 2009 alone, not counting the extra money made on the weekends by " inspecting" building hydrants. Is it clout? is the expense of firing these thieves and suing them for the money too much? Or is it something else? Rumor has it that the commanders of the unit are officials or former officials of the Afro-American Firefighters union and that the unit is overwhelmingly black and firing them would prove to be embrassing and politically risky. Esepcially in the light of the city now having to pay and hire over 100 blacks involved in a lawsuit against the city and fire department. I really wonder if the rumor is true?
The city is "auditing" all city employees who use personal vehicles and recieve "mileage". Lots of shit going to hit the fan. They all carry city issued gps equipped nextels. It's going to be like shooting fish in a barrel. Like the fire inspectors ,they KNEW this and STILL falsified readily verifiable records. Also if any of the money is tied to federal funding, the I.G. can really twist the screw. Stupid is as stupid does.
Gimme back MY Tax-Dollars. It's NOT the City's Money they stole. It's ours, the Taxpayers.

I'm a retired Fireman and I totally agree.
Calling these mopes firefighters is a slap in the face to any CFD member that works in a busy firehouse. Watch for the former deputy commissioner of the FPB, Mr Nick Russell, to pull out the race card any day now. When good old Nick was head of the african american firefighters league the only blacks he took care of were himself and his play captain Annette. Now that Annette is on Rahms public safty team I'm sure she and the revruns convinced Rahm that firing all these democrats wouldn't look good come next election.

according to multiple firefighter neighbors-they are ALL minorities.
This is gonna be very good for lawyers to use at the Police Board . So my client has been accused of this yet if he was a fireman he wouldnt be subject to termination. How screwed up is that ! Are you reading: needam,roddy, herbert,thompson,fahy,etc...????
Divide and conquer. Once he gets you calling each other assholes and jagoffs, he owns you. Only the guy that said "I want to know who there clout was" is a jagoff and an asshole. We want to know who your grammar school spelling teacher was. That's why it pays to send your kids to catholic school. Those nuns will beat that proper grammar in and you'll never be humiliated by an assinine Facebook page composed by one of your children.
