Mold Makes the News

  • The Chicago Police Department says it is investigating reports of a mold problem at the Police Academy, at 1300 W. Jackson Blvd.
  • “A grievance has been filed by the FOP several weeks back, and we’re waiting on the Illinois Department of Labor to send out a safety inspector to take a look at the conditions that are there,” said FOP spokesman Pat Camden.

Camden said it is not clear where in the building the mold located, but “it’s enough to where somebody has complained to the union in regards to it, and that’s when we filed a grievance.”

We guess this means they'll address 024's mold issue tomorrow, and 012 the day after that. Problem solved! Or maybe not.

So... Does anyone give a shit about the coppers who have gotten sick and have died/are dying from being exposed to the ghastly shit in 012, 013, 011, the old 006, the Training Division and other places?

The city has played games with our safety on the belief that Policemen are ultimately expendable and replaceable.

City Hall has skimmed and diverted Billions of dollars that were originally allocated for Police use. That is a hell of a lot of infrastructure/physical plant improvement.

Again, we point out the suppression of information regarding this.

While everybody pisses and moans about how "generous" our medical policy is.

Our medical policy probably wouldn't garner a second look if not for the habitual abusers drawing unnecessary attention.

Bust the abusers out... They fuck it up for everybody. Hell, even better still, make 'em pay it back when they're caught with their foot off the bag. That could be a start.

We know of too many coppers who were sick and coming to work half dead and not really knowing why they were feeling so bad.

We know of too many workout warriors and health nuts who were stricken with assorted ailments and dying way too young.

"How could that happen? He/She was healthy as a horse!"

Heh...

The mutts holler "Fuck the Police" on the streets.

Shortshanks, 9.5, & the alderfools have fallen over each other to demonstrate how less of a fuck they give about Policemen by skimming and diverting thousands of Police Officres worth of salary, cutting corners and giving short shrift to improving hazardous working conditions.

They again and again prove themselves incapable of doing the right things by us in that regard.

"Get sick and die already. More money for us. We're busting out every benefit you Coppers won over the last four decades just because we can."

Gee... Thanks for giving a damn.

They're above the day to day worries and concerns of Policemen and their families.

Well, if they didn't spend more time in the station working out on company time and out on the beat this wouldn't be happening.

Many people are allergic to mold or do not like to be near it. By strategically placing the mold in the station lobbies, it may help deter some of the street people from the station houses.

Health status of employees--not good.

By the time an inspector arrives at any of these places, there will be a white-wash of conditions to pass inspection, and then all will go back to the original conditions.

I can't believe the shitholes I've worked in...and still do. In 25 years nothing has changed.

Don't expect much from this.

But it IS nice to see the media relies on this 'insignificant' blog to come up with stories!

Good job SCC!!!!

In the d-unit where I work it is a cacophany of sneezing, wheezing and coughing. There are boxes of tissues on everyone's desk. Is that normal all year round? Funny, I rarely sneeze at home.

Every Unit that has an issue with mold, sewage, asbestos, etc. should contact the FOP and file a safety complainant.

Additionally, file a complaint with:
OSHA Regional Office Region #5
230 S. Dearborn
312-353-2220
Emergengy # 1-800-321 OSHA

and with:
Illinois Department of Labor
Chicago Office
160 N. LaSalle Street
Suite C-1300
Chicago, IL 60601
Phone: 312-793-2800
Fax: 312-793-5257

Start filing complaints, document the problem(s)(video/camera) and then stop complaining on this blog!

If you fail to take action, the fault is yours when nothing is done about it.

The technological wonder aka the 911 Center will have the same problem, which is festering as we speak.

The roof leaks, and during heavy rains they close off one of the stairwells due to the pools of water on the stairs & landings. After they empty the buckets of water, mop up the mess, and let it dry, you can use the stairwell again, IF you can stand the stench of what is most likely mold growing behind the walls.

This city is a fucking joke!! They won't fix this problem, but'll spend millions for a fucking nature sanctuary.

Well if we are worried about mold please check the 024. The floor by the processing rooms have this white/greenish mold growing and the cleaning people don't do anything about it. Plus, the roof needs to be repaired, but don't worry a tree that fell down was cleaned up the next day.

I would like to thank the city for looking out for the officer that protect the citizens.

3 Words, CLASS ACTIION LAWSUIT!!!!!!. If we don't hold the cities feet to the fire, they will continue to walk all over us. If you work in any of these affected Districts, NOW is the time to band together. This should be lead by the Union thru the unit Reps. If the Union won't do it, maybe a Private Atty interested d in a huge payday would be interested. This not only crosses Civil issues but the misappropriation of funds, and neglect should be criminal.

The City Hall/County Building is older than any police station now.

Let's find some mold in that palace of truth, justice and the American way and see what happens.

Here is Something That WILL Make the News!

KIDS SCIENCE FAIR PROJECT GROWS MOLD FROM PUBLIC BUILDINGS.

If your kid is interested in this sort of thing have him do it, especially if he or she is bright and articulate and would make a good interview on TV.

This isn't just a city government problem. I work for the Federal Gov, we work in a private building that has mold growing in it. Complaint was filed and a Government agency person came out with equipment and was testing the area. When we showed the tester an area of concern he was stopped/told not to test the area because it was a "common area", although the common area was on the floor the government was renting! We also had mold growing in petrie dishes, tester did not even take them. When the "public" has come in to the office several had made comments about the mold smell. Hope you have better results than we did.

Meanwhile our tax dollars are hard at work.

Just a short time ago Governor Quinn took an entourage of State lawmakers to Israel so they could sign a sister lake agreement.

Remember that?

http://www.jpost.com/International/Article.aspx?id=230831

Woo-hoo eh?

Just look at the money and jobs flowing into Illinois from that deal eh. Exports are booming too right?

Yeah where? I don't see them either.

I see a State Unemployment rate that is up in Aug. and just shy of 10% now.

What's ironic about that trip was that it was sold as being necessary to sign the deals there in person.

Meanwhile as Quinn was in Israel though, he then leverages a remote technology that is known as an "auto pen" to remotely sign and approve a new Illinois law on Bath Salts...yes remotely while he's in Israel!!

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/2011-07-24/news/ct-met-bath-salts-illegal-20110724_1_bath-salts-synthetic-drugs-synthetic-marijuana

Kind of backwards?

Where are the tech-savvy politicians that know how to use technology for the taxpayers advantage instead of personal gain?

You can argue whether the trip was paid for by anonymous donor(s) and I don't know if that's true or not...in fact I find that even more troubling -- in this circle-jerk world of tax breaks for jobs and corporate lobbyist campaign contributions.

You don't get something for nothing.

Anyways... The lawmakers no sooner came back from that trip and then went on break for five weeks .

Now, after a week of two of work Quinn is off to China on another trade mission for another 8 days along with another entourage of 30 people!! What the hell is that?

They tell us the State is broke. Yet they're burning up the jet fuel on transoceanic flights like it's a ride on the Green Line.

I mean...okay...let's say that it was all necessary. You want to tell me that we couldn't push off the signing of a sister lake agreement a few weeks so that all this could be done on a one shot trip deal?

I don't know why these deals can't be done remotely...with the same auto pen technology and a video conference if you need to look someone in the eye.

It's not like we don't have cameras or know how to use them right? They're all over the city!!

No sooner then the lawmakers and the Governor return from this China trip it will be time to shut down for the holidays and then it will be off for campaign fund raising tours for the next 12 months. Oh and not to mention all the G8/NATO summit distraction b.s. we have to look forward to.

So it's not only the money being spent on travel and accommodations. It's the wasted time, the wasted manpower and opportunity to get things done that are important to the taxpayers.

Don't expect anything to get done until 2013 or later. We'll have to drag out any major changes so that we can use the crises for election fodder.

The substandard construction that went for premium prices to payoff the thieves is catching up with the city.

Many other city owned buildings are in the same kind of trouble. It is not just police facilities.

Many of the buildings cannot really be fixed. They would have to be torn down and rebuilt. Where is the money for that?

Not a trivial problem.
