Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Tuesday defended his decision to cut in half — but still retain — the police bodyguard detail that accompanied former Mayor Richard M. Daley and his wife, Maggie, into retirement.
Emanuel noted that he’s cutting the detail from six active officers to three and that two of those officers would be on call to take Maggie Daley to and from the hospital and to doctors visits.
Maggie Daley has suffered a series of recent setbacks in her nearly 10-year battle against metastatic breast cancer.
“While we are a city of big shoulders, we’re also a city of big hearts,” Emanuel told reporters at an unrelated news conference.
We had to take Grandma to the doctor the other day. We hired a Medi-car to do it. She worked for the city for many years, was actually on the payroll. Raised 5 kids, buried a husband, beat cancer once already. Where's her car and driver?

NO! And she should. She was a good Mayor who tried to do the right thing.
It was a red herring all along. He asked for 6 when he really wanted 2 or three. That way when it was cut down people would say "oh that's more reasonable" when reality is it's still not reasonable to give an ex mayor protection and especially not reasonable for his wife.
She no more special then any other city worker who has cancer. In fact she was never a city worker. She was on some boards she had no qualifications to be on. She had a wing named after her a hospital and her daughter got a clout job that she wasn't qualified for either so that's her reward. Why is she the only wife of an ex mayor who gets police escorts to the hospital.
Rahm says " we are also the city that has a heart" I bet there's plenty of teachers who disagree.
I feel very sorry for Mrs. Daley's health problems, but wouldn't an ambulance be a better choice of transport to a hospital? The truth is anyone that called the police for a ride to the hospital would get one, they don't need to be assigned by the mayor to do the job we signed on for--in case you haven't noticed Mayor--we help "all citizens," on a daily basis.

Thank you everyone for not making me feel like an insensitive asshole. As soon as I heard Rahm's story about taking Maggie to the Doc's - a almost choked on my morning coffee. My first thought was "is she the first spouse of a city worker (or anyone) to have cancer?" Why is she getting special treatment. How many of our husbands, wives, children have been extremely and we've not been given the opportunity to have them taken by district coppers for treatment and not have to use our time to do it? Don't get me wrong, I've always liked Mrs. Daley and I'm very sorry for everything she is going through. But this is nonsense.
Why does the city owe her anything? She along with the littleman chose the life of service to the city, and I believe they have done well for themselves. I have a parent that worked for the city for over 30 years, and I am quite sure He gave more of his heart to this city than Ms. Maggie, and for far less compensation. it is time to end this. This poster is right. Some Pat Ryan of AON charity paid Maggie Daley a big fat six figure salary for years. All those trips she took to Paris gotta be paid for somehow.

OK, media we know you read this blog, so can someone start letting out how under staffed this city is to host the G8 Nato Summit? Is this Obama's last great gift to the tax paying citizens of chicago, a destroyed city? Well, my brother was a retired PO and he developed diabetis. HIs choice was go to a nursing home because insurance would not pay for an ambulance to take him 3x a week to dialysis. And he didn't have any police officers assigned to carry him to the doctor's office. He chose to go home and died a day and one half later. His choice.
Mrs. Daley has the same choice's because she isn't suppose to have police officers carry her anywhere. Not only shouldn't she have it, she doesn't appreciate it! Royalty mentality. Hire an ambulance service, go to a nursing home....or stay home and suffer the same choices we are given!

I also feel bad for her medical issues, what she has gone through I would not wish on anyone. That said, doesn't she have kids? A husband? Isn't that their job? To be there to hold her hand? Does shanks and the family go along for the ride? When my pal was going through his treatments for lymphoma, I drove him and his wife downtown for the sessions. It would have been nice to have lights and sirens on hand. But then we are just a couple of coppers, nothing special.

Sorry, but don't make this out like we don't feel sorry for her medical issues. We've all had relatives and friends who have suffered from terrible diseases. If you haven't, you are lucky. This has to do with a system of entitlement that is reserved for those in power. The Daley family is rolling in dough. They could hire a limo, or a private ambulance, or god forbid, buy a car and take her to the treatments. Just like I have done, you will do and so will everyone who is confronted with these issues. If we are such a great city, then why not offer a ride to anyone who wants one. let's not forget the folks making bond at the stations, lets thank them for being arrested and offer the olive branch and take them home, but first ask them if they need anything to eat or something from the store, are we being led by a F_____G nut case, take these rich ass former people to the doctors with taxpayers money.
How many kids do the Daley's have? 3 or 4? When my folks were alive all of us kids took them everywhere they had to be No one outside our family was ever obligated or asked to do that for them. All the past maoyors never got this kind of service. I know Daley doesn't have a drivers license so he could certainly pay a cab fare and write if off on his business espenses. What a cheap arrogant punk.

When my father in law was dying of cancer, my wife and I took turns taking time off of work to drive him to the V.A. for chemo, my neighbor would watch out and help us carry his wheelchair up the steps. All this and raising three kids. FUCK YOU DALEY AND RAHM. Now I know how the French felt when they heard "let them eat cake". Sic Semper Tyranis motherfuckers.

Well, I have lost friends and family members to this disease and I truly feel for her and her family regarding the disease, but as a taxpayer I don't think I owe it to her to provide free POLICE and LIMO service to and from doctor visits... WTF? They make 4X the money I make, they can afford their own transportation, just like I have to do if I need to get to the doctor... it is outrageous to provide this service .. If Rahm wants to provide and pay out of his own pocket a civilian driver and a car, I don't care, but police officers? taxi shuttle to hospital? I think not.
Hey Rham, how about cutting the number of Alderman in half and save the city millions of wasted tax dollars. And for you Rham, take a pay cut, after all your a millionaire...

So I'm reading about this brouhaha that Senator Jackson is having with a potential political challenger Halvorson set to possibly run against him ...and what surfaces is that fact that J.J Jr. moved his kids to D.C. to go to school there.
Now Jr has a wife and she is a Chicago aldermen....right?
Now if Jr is always in D.C. and he moved his kids to D.C. to go to school in D.C. as otherwise he would hardly be able to ever see them as he states...well isn't Ms Jackson, the Chicago aldermen, there in D.C. too?
Last time I checked the school year is 40 weeks long and if one stays in a State for an entire school year that would be over 50% of the time making you a resident of that State..
So where do you pay your taxes?
...and If she also is spending over 50% of her time in D.C. it just goes to show how bloated the city is with aldermen.
How can one argue that if you cut the number of alderman in the city the people in your ward would not get proper representation when the alderman isn't there 50% of the time?
Now... I don't know if this is the case here however if the alderman is gone 50% of the time I'm sure the city can do just fine with 49 aldermen. We may be halfway there already
Oh and so much for residency requirements and the trickle down economics of the aldermens paycheck flowing back down into the community that they serve.

Example 1. If it was your RDO and an election day, you only got paid for 8 hours. I worked 20 hours at a poll and got fucked out of 12 hours OT by Hoghead Daley.
Example 2. If you were a detective you had no protection from being dumped. The areas would be called by 11th State and told give them x number of names to be launched. It was done without cause and happened on a regular basis. I hope all the Daleys go to hell.

If you could get inside Daley's pea-sized brain you'd find out what he thinks of the criticism for having the gracious Maggie hauled to the hospital in the city's dime. He probably thinks that the hospital should come to them.
Just try and get away with using a company car to take your wife/husband to a doctors appointment while you are on duty.
Just because he was mayor for over 20 years does not mean he is ENTITLED to this or any special treatment. Hell, he acts like he sacrificed for all that time.
