HR had all of their staff leave early so they could have maintenance clean. Everyone else on the 2nd floor (the same floor as Hr) were apparently out of luck. They better hope no one gets infected as a result of their incompetence.

MRSA, or Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus, is a BACTERIA,(not a virus)that is resistant to all antibiotics. It came into being from overuse and improper use of antibiotics. MRSA infections of the skin cause large painful boils that are very difficult to treat. You CAN die from MRSA of the skin in the same way you CAN die from a dog bite, possible but not probable. Often, gym equipment and gym showers are the sources of infection in men, or so it is thought.

The "flesh eating bacteria" (not a virus, darling) is misnamed because it is really not just one bacteria and it actually a disease that can be caused by many different bacteria (MRSA among them) called necrotizing fasciitis. You know you have this disease when your skin and fat turns black and falls off and then you die.

He probably got it from the gym and gym showers! Fucking nasty! To make things worse, with the exception of just a couple of newly constructed police stations, HQ and other buildings have absolutely no ventilation. Not one fucking window that can be open or left open for fresh air and ventilation! So, fucking germs and mold and other creepy shitincubates like no other! But no worries, we're just the police. We have to suck it up, stay healthy, and never use the Medical.

MRSA is spread by contact. So you could get MRSA by touching another person who has it on the skin

Factors that have been associated with the spread of MRSA skin infections include: close skin-to-skin contact, openings in the skin such as cuts or abrasions, contaminated items and surfaces, crowded living conditions, and poor hygiene. People may be more at risk in locations where these factors are common, including: athletic facilities, dormitories, military barracks, households, correctional facilities, and daycare centers

Casual contact -- such as kissing, hugging, and touching--is usually okay. Avoid touching catheters or wound sites

gee--anyone think there is probably way more MRSA in stations, lockups, squad cars--and way more potential contact from cuffing and transporting---can we all close early too??? Seriously was the allegedly infected member oozing over their co-workers open cuts, desks and telephones??

keep your infected wound covered and take your antibiotics- and have a quick recovery

EGAD!

Is there anyone left who would even pretend to give a shit about the well being of Policemen?

Why is it that so much is being suppressed about the things that negatively impact our health and well being?

If this involved a regular citizen, there would be alerts and warnings out the wazoo.

Our work spaces/work environments are quite possibly killing more Coppers than anything and the city & department is fully aware.

"Keep it quiet, we don't want those out of control Coppers to find out we've been murdering them for years..."

Do they fear that much the loss of the veneer of their "control" over CPD that they're willing to burn Policemen like candles?

Yet they want to harp on ethics and accountability...

These are some unconscionable muthafuckahs...

God Bless & full recovery to the affected Sergeant...

File the appropriate complaints and actively consult with counsel with expertise in this field. Games are being played with the health of Policemen for the sake of politics and spite.

Capt Ryan on midnights in 019 is the biggest morale buster on the CPD. Adults are treated like babies and not allowed to work with a regular partner or have a set start time. Gee, maybe that has something to do with why nobody does anything, because they have no consistancy with a partner. Great management skills, northside handjob!

I had it a little over a year ago. MRSA is extremely painfull!!! I have never felt such horrible pain in my life and I'm not exagerrating. Spent 3 days in the hospital. But, I got MRSA b/c I had an open wound from a blister on my foot and at the time has a weakened immune system. So, it was easy to catch. No need to panic.

I had MRSA, the doc prescribed bactriban ointment. applied it in the nostrils with a q-tip for period of five days if I remember correctly. I had to put neosporine and iodine on the boils and covered them with bandages. They went away within days. The doc said if it gets worse get to the hospital, for round of IV antibiotics. it's everywhere though. All the dirtbags we deal with, and the nasty budding we are in, it isnt surprising cops get it.

Please allow me to clarify this thread. The Sergeant did not have MRSA. The mistake he made was that his girlfriend told his boss of the initial diagnosis of a ER doctor when he went on the Medical. It was an infected cut sustained while working in his garage at home. Never went to the gym. With no CONFIRMED diagnosis, HR jumped the gun by holding a staff meeting, informing personnel of his identity without gathering the facts and in doing so, violated his rights (Hello, HIPA?) . Never taken out via Ambulance on Thursday. There was a squad car T/C in the HQ lot, hence the Ambulance. This will probably lead to some legal action being taken.I know the Sergeant quite well, he would have never placed his co-workers in harm. This incident has been an embarrasment to his reputation and to his family members on the job.

I had mrsa last year and wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. The small spot turned into a huge boil that opened up and oozed for weeks. Eventually, they had to cut a section of my skin out. I couldn't sit down for long periods of time and I was worried when I went to yoga class. I haven't had it since but the dr said if you get it once, you will get it again. Now, I wash my work pants every day and don't wear them two days in a row. I'm almost positive I got it from the seat in the squad car. Be careful folks.

=======================

Let me preface this by stating that I work in healthcare IT and we are constantly working the manglement to make certain that employees are up-to-date on the most recent HIPPA and HITECH [healthcare data security rules.]

Just as in law enforcement, IGNORANCE IS NEITHER A VALID DEFENSE OR AN EXCUSE!

If someone has first hand knowledge of this a HIPPA VIOLATION must be initiated.

This can be done, online, at:

http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/complaints/index.html

They WILL follow up on the complaint. Be prepared to have specific details: NAMES, DATES, and a full description of the incident.

HIPPA covers everything medical. Under the new HIPPA laws, it is illegal for anyone to discuss any part of any other person's medical situation with anyone at all - PERIOD.

TWO EXAMPLES:

1. If someone is out of work, HR may state they are "out sick" but may not give any details. Again, there are NO EXCEPTIONS.

2. If the girlfriend of the person involved was informed so that she could inform HR he would be out and away from work, neither she, nor HR is allowed to communicate the specifics to anyone else.

GOVERNMENT IS NOT EXEMPT FROM HIPPA. File a complaint at: http://www.hhs.gov/ocr/privacy/hipaa/complaints/index.html

MRSA is NOT resistant to all antibiotics. It is a treatable infection. It has been in hospitals and nursing homes for ages, and in the community for quite some time, too. if you were to culture various surfaces around the city, you'd find it everywhere (and given the number of cops married to nurses, most of you have it in your homes and are probably colonized with it). This is hardly earth-shattering news, people. Don't let the media make you think otherwise.

10/09/2011 01:41:00 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

A lot of misinformation is listed here. MRSA is endemic in the neighborhoods and it is split generally into 2 types. The neighborhood acquired type is USUALLY able to be treated with cheap antibiotics (doxycycline or Bactrim). Most common error in diagnosis is thinking a MRSA infection is a spider bite.

Hospital acquired or multiple drug resistant MRSA, is the one that is more difficult to treat. That is the one usually requiring prolonged treatment or treatment with powerful and/or expensive IV antibiotics.

Bactroban is used in the nose for those who are CARRIERS, who are colonized or have difficulty getting rid of a MRSA infection elsewhere on the body. You can be colonized and not be in danger if you are otherwise healthy.

MRSA is a staph bacteria, not a virus. IT is passed by contact and can be limited by good handwashing. If you visit a hospital, make sure you wash you hands and dont be afraid to ask a hospital person to do the same.

Your worse than a fucking moron, because your a moron that disseminates false information about a very dangerous bacteria. MRSA is a big deal, if it doesn't kill you you, it can seriously impact the quality of your life. At this point there is only ONE anti-biotic that can treat it. When it becomes resistant to that, we're fucked.
