Bad Idea

Trust this Department to come up with some decent training on one hand, then put everyone taking it in harm's way:
  • SAFETY ALERT....

For anyone attending the Mobile Field Force Operations class at UIC. Be advised that a bureaucratic tactician, in his or her infinite wisdom, has decided that all participants, including instructors, should be unarmed. Also, the facility is unsecured. Anyone can walking into the facility at any given time. I'm not sure why this training isn't being conducted at a secured police facility. Kinda of funny that they would have a "law enforcement sensitive" training open to the public and at the home of Bill Ayers and other radical student groups. Just remember, shit happens anywhere, even on a university campus. Just remember...Va Tech, Univ of Iowa and Univ of Texas. So, do what I did and make sure you have that back up weapon on you or accessible.

We've already heard reports of "students" filming the training and fleeing when confronted. Anyone who has attended UIC knows the campus is wide open, and as the commentator says, the past home to some very radical persons.

We're also aware that during training, accidents can happen, so securing firearms is usually a good idea. But to disarm instructors? You've just created an overly target rich environment without any chance for defense. At least the doors were locked at Near North. Even the old School Violence drills held at various high schools back in the day had armed police riding along at all stages, dressed as "out-of-play" but armed with radios and guns in case something bad happened.

Isn't this a tour of duty? We are supposed to be armed during a tour of duty. And how can anyone tell a cop that they can't carry his/her gun?

It is a state law that no firearms are allowed on campus. An off duty police officer who is a student on campus cannot be armed and is required to go to the University Police and lock up his firearm or leave it at home. That law has been on the books when I was a student there in the 70's. I suppose the campus police could waive it if they wanted to. And, I have worked with the campus police. They are pretty good and concerned. Don't brush them off so easily. Their leaders however, are former CPD hacks.

I will NEVER EVER disarm for ANY reason whatsoever!
For training purposes? Fuck that!
SCC made some valid observations about what can happen to ANYONE.
Get the mail, armed, throw out the garbage, armed, walk the dog, fucking- A I'm armed.
Even paranoids have enemies.
Think about that video of the old man getting in his car with chicken for his family, the offender , on parole for ANOTHER murder, runs up to victim and shoots victim point blank range, killing him.
I'll never let someone's stupid rule get me killed!

Do they have a SECURE gun locker for me to use with an ARMED police officer guarding all our weapons? If not, are they telling me I have to leave it in my car. Then if I do that and my car gets broken into, a gun is now in the hands of a criminal, I'm out $1,000 and the department will probably try giving me suspension time of some sort. No thanks, I'll keep my gun on my person during my tour of duty.

Re:g8 training for tier 2What kind a class is it where the instructors tell you we r f'd during G8, Ii know they speak the truth but why would a person uncharged voluntarily put the city in this situation? Why even have a class?? Leaving the neighborhoods unprotected!

Does any of the training involve firearms? If not it seems pretty stupid to not be armed. We're expected to carry on the street everyday. Aren't we going to be required to carry during the G-8 summit? If there isn't a reason to draw your weapon during the training, I don't see how it's any more dangerous than being on the street.

A lawful order was given. Unless you want to be disciplined for failure to follow a lawful order, you have little choice. Why is this even an issue?

There may well be a very good reason they want no one armed. Possibly due to the nature of the training. Perhaps there are parts of the training that are realistic enough and unexpected enough that there is fear someone might start shooting when that is not desirable.

The disarming is federal requirement for that training. It's not the idea of anyone from CPD. They do keep a couple of the instructors armed during the training.

Actually get your facts straight:

720 Illinois Compiled Statues 5/21-6 makes it a class A misdemeanor to possess or store on property “supported in whole or in part with State funds or Federal funds administered or granted through State agencies” any weapon “without prior written permission from the Chief Security Officer for such land or building.” Under this Statute, weapon is defined as including “a handgun, sawed-off shotgun, sawed-off rifle, any other firearm small enough to be concealed upon the person, semiautomatic firearm, or machine gun...any other rifle, shotgun, spring gun, other firearm, stun gun or taser as defined in paragraph (a) of Section 24-1 of this Code, knife with a blade of at least 3 inches in length, dagger, dirk, switchblade knife, stiletto, ax, hatchet, or other deadly or dangerous weapon or instrument of like character...a bludgeon, black-jack, slingshot, sand-bag, sand-club, metal knuckles, billy or other dangerous weapon of like character.” The University considers souvenirs and weapons that have been rendered permanently inoperative to fall within this law, as well as any bomb, bombshell, grenade, bottle or other container containing an explosive or noxious substance.

SCC, you sure know how to get people going! When you do any training exercise, the weapon must be secured.

When we did riot training before, had to check weapon, scenarios at academy, had to check weapon, and many more examples. There is a lock box/storage that is watched the entire time.

They are not infringing on any of your rights, they are protecting you. Because based on some of these comments, I would be a tad skeptical being in a scenario knowing one of these "grievance grievance grievance" people has a loaded weapon and will remember that during the exercise!

You are really reaching on this one, SCC.

Really reaching??? When was the last time you went to work and voluntarily removed your sidearm for the tour? These officers are in a non-secured, non-police facility! At one point you are in the gym which is completely open to the public and you have about 50 officers unarmed, including the instructors. This is a FEMA issue they even make you check your gun for TARA 2. It is an issue that the whole world would love to Monday morning quarterback is some tragedy happened and yet it is SO preventable. So this is not some reach it is an issue that needs to be addressed or at least brought into a 100% secured police facility!

Well there might have been a rifle range in the student union, I do not recall that. But, I do know the law was on the books back then and we were warned about it. And, you bother to check, the law is still on the books. You cannot bring weapons onto state supported land without the permission of the security chief. So, I do have my facts , buddy! I would think that this is up to the head of security at UIC, who happens to be a former CPD hack. And, I reqally want to see some of these tough guys refuse an order to not bring their weapon. A lot of bs tough talk.

Yes you are missing something. The 1st poster was correct when he said that Ayers taught at UIC. He lives in Hyde Park but doesn't work for the University of Chicago. But he did teach at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
