Cop Killer Dies in Prison

  • A former Chicago man whose planned parole sparked outrage 43 years after he killed two police officers in a Northlake bank robbery has died behind bars.

In a brief notice sent Wednesday, the Federal Bureau of Prisons stated that Henry Michael Gargano, 79, died Oct. 13 in a North Carolina federal medical correctional center. Afflicted with emphysema and stricken by two heart attacks, Gargano had been at the facility since last autumn.

The son of a university police officer, Gargano and two men killed Northlake police officers John Nagle and Anthony Perri while robbing the Northlake Bank on Oct. 27,1967. Four days later, authorities arrested him and accomplice Clifton O. Daniels in a cottage near LaPorte, Ind. The third robber, Ronald Del Raine, was wounded and apprehended during the bank robbery

The three men were each sentenced to 199 years in prison, where Daniels died. Del Raine is the lone survivor.
Two down, one to go, and the family is willing to travel to make sure the last one dies in prison as intended by the courts:
  • "That's a bit of a reality check," Nagle said. "We may have to go through the whole process again. But, if it comes down to another hearing, we'd all be willing to put up with it."
Hopefully, they won't have to.

Now, these are the ones -- not homeless people in a shattered, hollowed-out postindustrial economy that has nothing left but speculators poking in the corners for an overlooked nickel -- of whom it can properly be said that they "chose to live outside society."

This was not the guy who handed the teller a note. I remember that they had a Browning Automatic Rifle in the mix.

They chose to play the hardest game there is -- and everyone lost.

Below is from cut on Indian Head Park, murder/burglary: Look what happens when people who assault cops are allowed to roam free.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart said there are still a lot of leads to follow up on. "This isn't ending," Dart said. "This will be an ongoing process."

Wilson has six previous convictions, Dart said, including aggravated vehicular hijacking, aggravated battery of a peace officer with a firearm, selling a stolen vehicle and controlled substance charges. He is on parole from the Pontiac Correctional Facility where he served 11 years for robbery of a school or place of worship, Dart said.

Interesting information. My father was the vice president of the Northlake Bank. I remember him telling me about this day. In fact, my dad was the one who hit the silent alarm to the police station.

Yea, Yea...I remember this! I lived in Northlake in 1967, lived near grand and Wolf, by Westdale School. I went to Mannheim Jr. High with Ann Marie Perri and had her in a few classes, she sat in front of me in History Class.
I remember it was a Friday, the day of the bank robbery, and Ann was walking ahead of me with her group of friends and I with my group of friends behind them, all of us on our way to Miss Bryan's history class...this would be early afternoon.
When we all pass by the corridor of the main offices an older man in work clothes intercepted Ann's group, put his arm around her shoulder and walked her to the main office. (I think it was her Uncle)We did not see Ann the rest of the day.

By the time we got home from school the robbery was all over the news, and the information of the useless violence that had taken Ann's father. Upon realizing what i witnessed, that Ann would soon receive the news of her fathers death when that man took her from her friends that day...I was sad for Ann, Very Sad.

We did not see her for about a week, and when she returned everyone was so kind to her...I think it helped with her morning...At least I'd like to think so... that we helped in some way.

Very sad...and everyone, the Adults..were on edge when the robbers were still free over the weekend. My dad actually had his shotgun by his bed that weekend, my ma told me later in life. Had them robber have shown their face in Northlake after that thing, the citizen would have blown the away, just like the old west.
We did have many WW2 vets as citizens there back in the day...and growing up around them, I'd of put my money on em over the career criminal psychopaths that took Ann's fathers life.
