The Full Story
- A custodian for a West Side police station allegedly stole a Chicago Police officer’s iPhone while he was in roll call preparing for his midnight shift late Thursday night, police said. Epifania Bahena, 35, of the 8900 block of South Exchange Avenue, was charged with misdemeanor theft...
Interesting how a story over a cell phone makes the papers, but a scandal involving the Evidence and Recovered Property Section, that has the potential to derail hundreds, maybe thousands of criminal cases, even if it's just motions to produce evidence in a courtroom, produces nary a whisper in the media.
As a comparison, look at this missing three kilos from the suburbs:
- Before three kilos of heroin were swiped from a Will County sheriff’s outdoor evidence storage container in October, someone parked a “food delivery truck” so it blocked a lone surveillance camera’s view of the container, a prosecutor said in court today.
The truck was parked there from the early evening until the next morning, assistant state’s attorney Michael Knick told a judge this morning, not specifying the date. Investigators who reviewed about 168 hours of surveillance video believe the drugs were stolen during that time, he said. The theft was discovered on Oct. 14.
The heroin is tied to a drug case against Jose Zamago-Pena, accused of transporting drugs for a Mexican cartel using a semi with California plates.
That's a big deal in Will County. But in Cook County? Not so much.

Amazing!
Absolutely amazing, how corrupt and inept the Chicago media is when CLOUT is involved.
If this was an UNCLOUTED PO his name, picture and everything else would be a half page article. He would be tried and ridiculed in the print and air media for weeks. The comments would be wide open for the "HATE THE POLICE" comments. The Mayor and Supt. would be in an uproar on the air, demanding heads and letting the public know, that they will get to the bottom of any police corruption.
Where is the crime sleuth Frank Main hiding out?
What's wrong Frank? Aren't you allowed to report on the news anymore? Did your editors tell you to stay off of any CLOUTED cases?
Funny how selective the Cook County States Attorneys Office and Anita Alvarez are in calling press conferences upon the arrest of lowly PO's.
Maybe Ol Tommy Toupee Dart solved this caper and hasn't called a press conference yet.
Superintendent Garry McCarthy had better conduct a thorough forensic audit of ERPS. There are extremely serious consequences from all this unabated theft from ERPS.
The Feds should be called in to handle this investigation and stop the IAD coverup.
No criminal charges in the ERPS mess. Lots stuff stolen, but only items without a name attached. No excuses for the thieves but they only took stuff headed to auction or disposal, not one court case will be effected. That is why he/they were so bold. They assumed the "no victim, no crime" attitude.
I believe that the good Lt violated USC when he sold these items in an online format and used the USPS and electronic means to transfer USC.
And they wonder why the corruption continues on the CPD?
When your bosses commit crimes and go unpunished it leads the subordinates to do likewise.
Time to clean house at ERPS and start with all fresh, security screened personnel.
The attorneys are just licking their chops at this epic mess.
I guess the exempt three ring circus that has been evaluating ERPS is in a conundrum.
Why even inventory property or evidence now?
Maybe J-Fed forgot to access security at ERPS...LMAO
Funny how this shit never happens in DuPage County.
Memo
Get the broom out and sweep this nightmare under the rug Garry.
Rahm
At least we know that the cameras work at ERPS now.
It must have been fun going to work at your own personal shopping mall everyday and not having to pay for anything. Fun, while it lasted that is.
The coverup is always much worse than the TRUTH.
sorry sports fans.. this is the sanctuary city and the edict is that we do not hold illegal immigrants. we set them free because we can't afford to compete with the drug cartels.
So instead we reward the illegals via the Illinois Dream Act with free money for college
Hey, if you don't like it just try and call mayor's "Office of New Americans"
Victor will retire and all will be forgotten. It's the Chicago Way!
How much did the Mexican Drug Cartel pay off to get the evidence to disappear?
FACT: the stuff the c/o was taking came from the dumpster. Some "stand up" p/o made the anonymous complaint. C/O now stripped but will not be charged. Going to retire just as planned.
So congratulations to the copper there who now fucked up this guys retirement. Hope your real proud of yourself.
The true story??? The Capt. On 3rd watch in 023 has to go!

If this is the true version, I hope we all learn a lesson. Next time let the story play out before we start ranting. While what he did was technically wrong - in reality all he did was garbage pick - and we spent two days spilling our dirty secrets to the world.
Viva La Illegals thanks God it was just a phone
Don't blame the p/o...blame the idiot who stole the stuff. you are an ass for blaming the p/o
To 5:27am...... R u fucking kidding me... Ruin this pos retirement.... He should not be allowed to collect a pension, I don't care if the item were headed to dumpster, we took a fucking oath and if there are two sets if rules (which there r for clouted n non-clouted, blk n wht) then that's why this dept is shit now.... Fucking idiots on this job!!

Last time I checked JEWELRY was never stored in the dumpster.
It is time for the FOP to sue the City over this "sanctuary city" BS.
The City and County have no right to ignore Federal laws and it is time they are called on it!
"Ah, the lure of the iPhones' ringtone, it's not always what it apppears, but who amongst us can resist".
Will County has problems?
Somebody (Rahm) placed a " Fool Delivery" truck in front of 35th & Michigan CPD HQ and made off with a real Superintendent, leaving behind another Jpud.
But as it goes, anything from a roach coach would be a better fit than someone from the current or past Mayors Office List of Clouted maroons.
Can't do an investigation unless approved by City Hall and States Atty Office, so it must be a doozy.
No Pride - No Integrity, nothing personal, just politics as usual.
To beat 1622...
"The stuff the c/o was taking came from the dumpster".Are you saying that one man's junk is another man's treasure???? The point is, he was taking it... I think there is a procedure for disposing of unclaimed property that is no longer needed as evidence... They call it an auction... As c/o he must have been aware of that slight inconvience, don't you think???
How sad that the c/o of a unit of this once proud department has reduced himself to the level of a dumpster diver...
Just how DID this anonymous PO fuck up this guy's retirement if he is retiring as planned??? Do his plans involve driving through alleys collecting stuff???? If so maybe he can get himself a decent pickup truck from the pound before it is crushed...They must have a few in running condition...
Maybe the location of his retirement party can be moved to one of the few remaining phone booths... They only need room for you and him, unless, of course, you are him...

Even if all of the above posted is true, this guy was still fucking STUPID. I'm sure this dumbass wasn't physically stumbling around in a dumpster like a pissbum. He should've been aware of what it would look like for a supervisor at ERPS to bring property (regardless of its disposition) home. Once again, I'm ashamed to be apart of this fucking JOKE of a department. Oh, and fuck you for defending this idiot.
It's call diversion. While you get your panties in a bunch over a cellphone theft. The ERPS scandal if it's true, is left out of the limelight. Btw, in 22years I've had shit stolen out of my locker by none other than our fellow brethen in Blue.
Her story changed again when she stopped by the Harrison District station Friday afternoon. She said she wanted to talk about the “misunderstanding’’ involving a phone she had found outside near a car, said Lt. Andrews.
Why the fuck do we ALLOW the Inept morons that run this city to Hire Illegals to work in City Facilities?
Why don't we all grow a backbone and report it to ICE?

Probably refused to Blow Tunney or the DC.
I have an iPhone and want to know what phone finder he used
She keeps changing her story until she can come up with one that will prevent her from being kicked out of the great Sanctuary City (like that actually would occur).
Deport the bitch and take Wienie Wanker Steinberg with you.

We had a guy working in 014 as a custodian for a few months. One day he's gone. We find out that they finally did a background check on him and had to fire him. During that time we had a few police helmets and gas mask stolen.
"Interesting how a story over a cell phone makes the papers, but a scandal involving the Evidence and Recovered Property Section, that has the potential to derail hundreds, maybe thousands of criminal cases, even if it's just motions to produce evidence in a courtroom, produces nary a whisper in the media."
The media is saving this story for the "right" time. They'll bring it out when things get slow, or if more dominoes in this tale begin to fall, and a lot of people get caught up in this scandal.
"Superintendent Garry McCarthy had better conduct a thorough forensic audit of ERPS."
McCarthy won't be allowed to conduct a forensic audit of toilet paper used at 35th Street without Rahm's consent.
Don't kid yourself into believing this anus is actually running the department. He's just another fall guy.
"And they wonder why the corruption continues on the CPD?
When your bosses commit crimes and go unpunished it leads the subordinates to do likewise."
It's Chicago's Culture of Criminality, Richard M. Daley's legacy.
'If the guy at the top can get his, I'm gonna get mine!'
"Time to clean house at ERPS and start with all fresh, security screened personnel."
All P.O.s have a background check. What are you talking about, an SBI?
"Why even inventory property or evidence now?"
It's less trouble if you don't. Less work for you. Less work for me.
"Funny how this shit never happens in DuPage County."
It just doesn't make the papers.
"Why don't we all grow a backbone and report it to ICE?"
Because there's a City Ordinance that prohibits it.
Of course there are ways around that ordinance...

iCloud has a finder feature...just make sure you also have a password on your iPhone or someone can turn off the locator.

A city ordinance does not out weigh Federal Law (even in a Home Rule State) in regards to reporting businesses for employing illegals.
And I said REPORT them...not do something that can get you stripped or sent to call back.
We see them everywhere: Latino/European/Canadian/whatever country they are from...

Ok D-Vault, stop it!!! Wrong is wrong. Jewelry has never been placed in the dumpster!!!
How the hell is it "technically wrong"? WTF is that bull$hit!
You throw out trash and legally relinquish ownership by law and our court system has made that clear in numerous cases.
Funny, I have never seen expensive jewelry thrown in the garbage by anyone. Honestly, this is the best coverup you can come up with???
Items slated for auction bring in much needed revenue to keep our taxes lower. Depriving the City of Chicago of said revenue is theft. It would be FELONY THEFT at that.

Care to elaborate for us non-geeks?
you see folks, clout and corruption are not just products of Crook County and Shitago. Anyone else catch the last line of the story here, the SHERIFF says his DAUGHTER, the ERPS custodian, was not involved. We can all sleep better now that thats cleared up.
