This is December, Right?

  • At least six people were wounded in shootings overnight, bringing the total to two dead and at least 13 wounded in gun violence in the city since Friday night.

And guess where there was yet another shooting? If you said "Uptown," give yourself a pat on the back:

  • A man in a car wounded in a shooting Sunday morning in the Uptown neighborhood is the latest in a recent string of shooting victims in that North Side community. The shooting occurred about 4:15 a.m. in the 4600 block of North Broadway, according to police News Affairs...
Can a good cold snap slow it down? Maybe, but as it's headed up to almost 50 degrees this week, we expect more of the same.

Uptown...the ghetto of the North. I wonder if Rahm and McSupe will divert Officers to 023 since crime is obviously spiking there. In the meantime, Yuppies and Hipsters are kicking themselves for buying condos in a more "diverse" neighborhood. While you're lying in your beds at night listening to the running gun battles outside, just remember...you are a much better person than I am. Night-night sweetheart.

According to a lengthy investigation by Chicago Magazine's David Bernstein and Noah Isackson, (Jan 2012 issue), the gang problems being faced in Uptown could be connected to a long pursued cooperation between former 46th Ward Alderman Helen Shiller and gang leaders frequenting her ward. Sort of a collusion of the unholy.

Other Chicago politicians and their connection to the street gangs are also exposed, as well as a map of alleged gang territories.

I was recently told that there are foot guys that are "supposedly" assigned to this uptown area in 023.

I have not seen one single one of these so called "foot guys" since i've lived here (years)!
In the last few months a few of us have been checking around wilson, from malden to clarendon. Sheridan, from lawrence to montrose. Broadway, from lawrence to montrose. Lawrence, from clarendon to malden.
Not one single time did we see a "foot guy" walking around. Not once.

I'm going to demand to know if these posts actually exists and if so why are these cops getting paychecks to hide all day.
What is their activity? What exactly do they do all day?

enough of the whining from the guy in Mass Transit already. I work special. I would be happy to come to your Unit. A lot of standing around the stations. How much of a problem do you have to be to get a Sgt hounding you? Haven't you figured it out? When you come here whining you just sound like a little girl.

A buddy of mine bought a condo in Uptown a few years ago, after moving out of a high rise at 11XX N. Dearborn. His place is right where these shootings are happening (his bldg has the Borders bookstore on the N. end of it, at a triangle type intersection).

He keeps telling me the area is "up & coming," which is the line I'm sure his realtor used on him.

To me, up & coming means, shitty right now. Call me in 20 years when that area has arrived.

In the meantime, his fiance gave him back the ring & moved out this weekend, saying, "I can't believe you made me move to a neighborhood where I hear gunshots at night."

Finally, he has three more years on his 5 yr int. only ARM before he needs to refinance. Good luck with that!!

Smoke and Mirrors!! No Uptown "foot Officers" Oh they may tell you so… But only on paper! Most "foot Officers" in 023 are working the desk, a way of circumventing the system! You see these special people are too afraid to or are connected to the Commander and are given inside spots that were eliminated, i.e community policing officers. They are now assigned as "Foot Officers" on the A&A roster but still maintain/work their never in uniform functions inside the District station. All this while the Beats and Sectors are under-strength.
So the next time you hear those gunshots and seconds count, remember... your "foot Officer" is somewhere in the 023rd District Station planing a senior citizen luncheon or showing some dumb-ass how to put a child seat in their Audi A8. Or simply not their at all? I don't recall having an Officer on the West or Southside assigned to an inside spot to instruct my baby daddy how to install a child safety seat... by appointment?

Embrace diversity folks!!! You got what you asked for, so now live with the consequences. The police are tired of being punching bags for an unappreciative public, particularly a public so far removed from reality.

As predicted, this type of shit is gaining traction and will be " full steam ahead" before you know it. Shortly thereafter is when the same assholes who vilified us will be begging for us to do something to make it all go away.

Unfortunately, we've passed the point of No Return. Proactive policing has pretty much gone the way of the dinosaur. The majority of us are content to arrive after the fact to clean up the mess and give you the meaningless piece of paper documenting your "tragedy".

You could give us 20% raises a year for the next contract, but until society unties our hands allowing us to do what is necessary, enjoy watching the police just go through the motions in the name of self preservation.

OT - An alleged Conservative Vice Lord is counselling the libs on the Uptown Update blog:

CVL said...
I used to be part of the problem in uptown during the late 90s. CVL when it was at its strongest. Back when we would be 100 deep at all times on Windsor and Hazel. Since then Gator turned FED rat and had Fred and other leadership locked up. We grew old, and realized we had futures past 20. I make a point of not going back to uptown now. nothing but trouble there. I just started looking at this blog when the stand off situation was going on last week. I Can see that you guys want to do something to change your community for the best. Here is a few of my recommendations.

A. Do what Andersonville did. 15 years ago, the Latin Kings dominated Clark street. A young black male wouldn't be caught dead on Clark. Clark was the north side's 26th street. 1 king would turn to 50 in a matter of seconds. Now though It's like lincoln park over there. no gang bangers, or at least nothing like it was.

B. Encourage local businesses to hire ex-felons that live in the community. 99% of gang bangers will get a felony when they turn 18 and never look for a job again, thinking no one wants to hire them. If an uptown business hires a felon and puts him in a position where he interacts with people, he will start to care a little about those people. If you went to subway and saw a troublemaker behind the counter. If you left a positive impression on him, maybe new his name, it would go a long way. you may even be comfortable enough to say hi to him by name outside of the job.

C. stop complaining, stay positive and progress forward. Harping on gun control is useless. criminals will find ways to get guns. more control will just cause them to cost more on the street. Which is nothing when in the hood. a gun represents power and endless opportunities. They will buy a gun first, car, rent, everything after the gun. How do they get the money? They will sell fake crack to hypes to raise $120 to buy an eight ball and go from there. your not going to stop the drug dealing, your not going to stop the gun purchasing. you might be able to shut down the sec. 8 gang buildings. But you can teach the "follower" thugs to care about the community and their future. The "leader" thugs you cant do anything about. that is resolved with good police work or them killing each other off.

Caution: vigilante police is not the way to go. 15 years ago, dick boys used to plant crack on people, exchange guns for freedom, and do everything some of you hope they would do. This just leads to an Us vs. them mentality and only ads to the problems. You can see the results in uptown it hasnt worked. vigilante police end up being greedy, robbing dealers and reselling the drugs and even becoming part of the problem. Feel free to Visit the 4 Corner Hustlers open drug market at 290 and Independence (BP gas station) and thank god that isnt uptown

Chances are the post does not exist. And if you as a citizen try finding out they won't tell you. If you live in 023 then you have reason to worry. The north side has lost a lot of officers due to retirement. When they leave they are not replaced. Most of the manpower is in the south and west sides of Chicago. Guess where the gangs, thugs, thieves, prostitutes, drug dealers, pedophiles, burglars and other assorted types are going to come to? Where there are less cops so they won't be bothered with.

Helen Shiller did some real damaged to this (Uptown) neighborhood. The new alderman is as dumb as a box of rocks. The 023rd District is way understaffed (as are all other Districts in the city). This are has one of the highest concentrations of people enrolled in social services. The are has also become a "transient hot spot", thanks to the red line.

The citizens (the ones that live there), need to wake up and demand services from their political leaders. Hold your politicians accountable. Do not BLAME the police officers, we are trying to do the best we can do, with the limited resources that we have. Uptown is only a small section of the 023rd District. The police also have to deal with Wrigleyville, Boystown, East Lake View, Lincoln Park, The lake front, etc.. Goegraphically, this is a small area, however, it has one of the highest population density in the city. In the summer you have to deal with the Cubs games (30,000 to 45,000) people flooding the area (park, bars, restaurants). On most weekends, you get between 6,000 to 10,000 young people patronizing the resstaurants, bars, shopping, and entertainment. Also, this area has tons of high rises, and many senior buildings. This area also has easy access via Lake Shore dr. and the Red/Brown transit lines. The easy access has brough many criminals to the area, looking for "easy" victims. It is time for the CITIZENS to be alert, and work with the police to bring the crime down.

....after how many decades of overall "gentrification?"

Looks like real estate speculation isn't going to save the city. (Boy, that's the understatement of the year.)

"Yuppies and Hipsters are kicking themselves for buying condos in a more 'diverse' neighborhood."

--12/12/2011 12:16:00 AM

"Diverse" -- people with jobs and skills living right on top of people with neither, in a no-prospects, deindustrialized environment, that has led to a worldwide great depression.

The housing juggernaut has ground to a stop -- and it was taking us to an impossible goal anyway. There has never been any such thing as a "service economy."

The 023 foot post is the biggest joke on the CPD. A HUGE waste of manpower and everyone knows they never did a damm thing but sleep and watch TV. It is a slap in the face to all the other coppers in 023. These guys laugh about their ghost spot. Hell, one guy has been on the medical for nearly a year now. No need for fake foot posts when 023 is the lowest staffed district in the city.

You need to ask your alderman why 023 has the lowest number of patrolmen in the city. 007 district has more than double that of 023. 023 has been decimated manpower wise. 023 has the most violence in A/3 but city hall is only worried about stats from the non-taxpaying area's of chicago. This is fact and a real problem.

Good friends of mine had their condo used by the SWAT team during the barricade situation last week.

Between that, the shootings, and the general scariness of Uptown, they broke their lease in two days and are moving to Belmont and Lincoln, where the only threat is drunken white yuppies pissing on lawns at 2AM.

She had nothing but good things to say about the SWAT team snipers who used their apartment.

But yeah, Uptown is the third rung of hell...or an episode of "The Walking Dead".
