Four people were shot in a drive-by shooting in the Uptown neighborhood this evening.
The victims were shot about 6 p.m. at Sheridan Road and Wilson Avenue, said Chicago Police Department News Affairs [...].
The four victims were on the street when someone began firing from a small, red car heading east on Wilson that then turned south on Sheridan, police said.
The shooting happened almost directly underneath one of those famous POD cameras. We aren't talking at the end of the block or around the corner, we're talking about right on top of it. So there must be almost live, crystal clear footage of the entire event, right? Subjects identified? Prosecution imminent?
Well, no. The camera is down. Nonfunctional. No footage to be had. The trouble is, this isn't a recent problem. The camera has been down for quite some time. And evidently, the criminals know it because they shot a few other people within sight of this camera before:
This is at least the third shooting incident with multiple victims near Sheridan Road and Wilson Avenue since Nov. 22, when a 15- and 17-year-old boy were shot about 9:30 p.m.
About 5 p.m. on Dec. 2, a woman was shot in the thigh while she was working in a nearby store when someone opened fire at another man, also injured, in a suspected gang-related shooting.
A 20-year-old man was also shot killed nearby, on the 4700 block of Winthrop Avenue, on Dec. 4.
You'd be mistaken.
And as a side note, it's nice to see that the entire POD camera debacle is progressing along exactly as predicted here by the readers. The hiring slowdown, the uptick in retirees, and the complete lack of a citywide unit to respond to situations exactly like this....combine this with the "illusion" of police presence via the POD cameras that feed tens of thousands of hours of footage into servers that no one is watching, it is a recipe for disaster.

A weird thing they do in 023 is that they don't let you pick who you want to work with. They don't even ask you for a preference. They just stick you on a car and say this is your new beat and your new partners. So if you get along good and work good with someone, tough shit, they don't give a fuck. They'll stick you with whoever "they" want and that's taht. It's no wonder everyone is so unhappy there. You can't even work with people you want to.

It looks like the petty psychological warfare has begun in the 025th district since the bosses are short on sales tickets for the big Christmas party this year. All of a sudden on third watch, no one is allowed to work 99! They even pulled officers, from the precious late night rapids, to fill in the holes of the couple of one-man cars that worked afternoons last night. This is something they never bothered to do before, even during the busy summer months when an officer's safty is most crucial. The reasoning behind this since it's winter time and slower then shit out? So they have an excuse to f%#k over the troops that have put in slips to have Christmas Eve off. Of course, they haven't gave a shit all year if someone had to work 99 before, but all of a sudden it's a big deal. Get ready to hear these words when time due starts getting denied for the 24th:
"Sorry guys and gals, but we can't give some of you the day off. After all, we don't want any 99 units out there, all by themselves."
Translation: If you're not coming to my party, then I'll wreck your holiday plans.
It would be different and understandable if this 10-4 policy had been enforced across the board from the beginning. Starting it up now just makes it plainly obvious what the meritorious goofs are up to. Truly pathetic. And if you think that this display of sudden safety concern is a legit attempt by the brass, to care for the well being of the men and women under their command, then I got a condo to sell you in the 7th district. Only $150,000. It's right next to a 'Fireworks, Puppy Dog, Candy, and Pornography store!'

Quit your bitching! The district commander of 025 is a good man. He always backs up his officers. The Sgt. are great too. 025 is a great place to work.
These cameras are such a low quality that you cant read a plate. The intersection traffic cameras can read a pimple on a bugs ass, but the GHETTO Cam is only there to add a blue strobe to the area. Remove the camera and upgrade the blue strobe to a Disco Ball and party on...

Its funny that this has been going on in 023 for a couple years now and it is never reported in the media. I wonder why? They have no problem reporting the routine South and westside shootings. What are they trying to hide??
The Commander of 023 is completely incompetant. She doesn't have a ounce of leadership skills. She never addresses the workers and surrounds herself with complete fools.
The car from this shooting drove down the sidewalk at 50 mph trying to kill additional people luckily no one was hit.
This same crew went to 011 after this and shot two more people.

The POD camera guy on zone 4 is calling in drinkers in front of the Y on Chicago all the time.
You can blame part of this directly on McCarthy. By closing the lockups, they have LESS working policeman on the street. 023 has no lockup now. Guys do the right thing and lockup some of these gangbangers. Now after your done processing you can wait upwards of 2 to 3 hours for a transport. You have the working officers sitting in the Processing Room who could be back on the street. The wagon who does the transports is actually operating as a Beat Car as well so they are often down on jobs. How do I know? Because this happened on Friday when these jagoffs hosed down the whole street with bullets and you could have had 6 to 8 more officers back on the street.
023 was a safe haven, but now that Tactical Barbie has gone, it's shit!

My favorite camera story is when the idiots monitoring the cameras live would cut into the radio almost like they had an emergency. Just to report that they were viewing someone selling loose cigarettes. After hearing them someone asked if they should blue light it over there. What a joke.
I know of two fairly recent homicides in 006 that happened directly underneath a pod camera. One at 79th and cottage, and the other at 83rd and vincennes. Both cameras caught nothing.
Another shooting there last night. Let's see...what does this northside district have in common with the most violent south- and westside districts...hmmm...

Doesn’t matter if the camera was working or not. The video quality is a joke. Worked a homicide that occurred right under a POD camera. The camera was working, but not rotating. You couldn’t identify the offender or even the make and model of the offender’s vehicle because the quality is so poor. Red light cameras, on the other hand, are much better quality.
As a 20+ year guy, working on the westside but living far north, I've always thought of finishing up in 023, or maybe 020. But constantly hearing about the douchebag bosses in 020, and seeing what's happening to 023, I may as well stay on the westside. At least 011 has pretty good supervisors, for the most part. Devil I know vs the devil I don't know, I guess. I truly sympathize with you guys in 023. Used to be such a great place to work. Hang in there, brothers.

That is the lowest in the City. The 23rd district has THE WORST CAPTAIN in the City working 3rd watch. That combination has been the recipe for this latedt disaster there.

Not sure if you guys know this, but there is a unit dedicated to managing and maintaining the pods 24/7, but with the campaign promise to put 1000 police on the street, they reduced it to only the crew that was on days, thereby leaving a crazy short staff to repair and maintain the pods that are obviously in need of constant maintenance. Initially I couldn't understand why there were police in a position like this but there does need to be a chain of evidence that obviously a civilian can not maintain.

Most of those cameras don't work. I remember when the gangbangers tagged the whole side of a grocery store at Lorel and Belden right in front of the camera and no one saw them. They were painting for about 15 minutes.

Sorry, but you are wrong. There is a secret crew of POD techs working at the academy. The room is labled the POD room and they have all the equipment to install and fix the cameras. They even have two trucks at their disposal. Next time you visit the academy look for the POD room on the first floor.

This is a very common occurrence in chicago. The cameras never work. The media should check out the stats and I mean the real stats. Who is the clout connection that is making money on the non-working cameras? Back in January a multiple shooting occurred at Wilson and Magnolia right under the camera. One man died from the gun shot wounds on scene. The police camera missed the whole thing and the only video came from a pantry. The only reason the shooter was caught was because a 023 UC witnessed it and chased the shooter down. Us detectives never expect anything from the cameras.

Everyone knew about he dirty activities, but it's nice to see it come to light. And people wonder why chicago is the most corrupt city in America.

@744pm,,,,,,,90 % of the crews were taken off their detail and put back in district,,,,that POD room is either empty or one or two guys do now what about 20 guys on 24/7 crews used to do.
What do you expect 3rd watch 023? made to work with PO's that you dont trust, PO's that cant complete jobs without assistance,PO's too afraid to do certain jobs,PO's coming to work thinking its a social event, denied time due,tons of silly missions, the list goes on and on. Nothing will be done until things change,shootings, robberies,assaults, who cares?

That is a tough area. When I was doing insurance work up there one time I chased off a couple of ten year olds throwing rocks at some old man when the Burger King was there. Another time some old woman came up to the passenger side window asking for money. I gave $5 of my $8 figuring I could eat McDonalds for lunch on $3 and you would have thought I gave her $100 she was so grateful. A tough neighborhood indeed but I always see plenty of you coppers there. Get some heads and lock them up.
Drink some Koolaid; come on - it's okay. You and your family are safe. We have ample police in the city and POD camera's that protect you.
The beat officer should be involved not only in the placement of these cameras but also in the way the cameras are positioned and rotated. The technicians do all that with disregard to what counts the most. Unless it is specific enough on the initial order prior to installment.
It is the responsibility of the district to check these cameras on a daily basis; order service, request tree trimming, relocation, etc...

You can blame part of this directly on McCarthy. By closing the lockups, they have LESS working policeman on the street. 023 has no lockup now. Guys do the right thing and lockup some of these gangbangers. Now after your done processing you can wait upwards of 2 to 3 hours for a transport. You have the working officers sitting in the Processing Room who could be back on the street. The wagon who does the transports is actually operating as a Beat Car as well so they are often down on jobs. How do I know? Because this happened on Friday when these jagoffs hosed down the whole street with bullets and you could have had 6 to 8 more officers back on the street.
2 to 3 hours for a transport? Hey asshat, you got the jagoff to the station just fine, why not take him or her to whatever lockup that handles your district. You have a cage car or are you a hair gel with a one way tact ride.

This was predictable.
I have seen them going by with about an 18 foot long steel bicycle rack dangling on top of their load -- too big to be from anywhere but a school or church or other institution -- and no one stops them in the backlog/Sanctuary City. They also steal wire-mesh city trash containers. They will stop for one lousy old tomato basket, three cents' worth of rusty wire. Every old TV is smashed up, broken glass left all over for a quarter's worth of copper. They are absolutely frantic.
There has been an unbelievable change in the last ten years, and it's accelerating. The alleys are now vacuumed clean of scrap metal from Niles all the way south to the S&S Canal as it is. As more and more of these people come in, it is equally predictable they are going to go after the manhole covers next and we will start getting people killed.
This happened in "Beijing" during the Olympics there -- with the huge crowds, something like thirty people were killed falling into open manholes. This did not come to light in our news until some American woman -- there to teach English -- fell and died.
I also heard a news story that they are coming up on residential porches and unscrewing/prying off brass doorknobs, lock plates, handles, etc.
This is OK. No human being ees illegal!

Camera....got to love this bs and not just for the inability of the device but the lazy ass cops it employees. I've had a few crime happen within visual of a blue box or red-light camera. An elderly woman beaten by a punk in the middle of the intersection - red camera. A robbery on a cta bus stop both red light camera & cta camera. A drug deal, a strong arm robbery, a burglary all near blue light camer.
Never obtained footage for any of them. Call CPIC for copy and they sound like your average lazy ass desk cop. We don't do that, why do you need it, maybe you should call back latter. You are all but guaranteed the standard won't need to get off my ass answer that the camera's down, unavailable at this time or was being adjusted.
