Share the Pain

Here's a brilliant idea - defer or give up your pay raises:
  • A pair of Chicago aldermen on Tuesday called on city library workers to give up pay raises so branch libraries can stay open six days a week.

The proposal came in a letter from Ald. Edward Burke, 14th, longtime chairman of the Finance Committee, and Ald. Brendan Reilly, 42nd, vice chairman of the Budget Committee.

“We think the public would be surprised to know — as we were — that all city AFSCME employees are receiving a 3.5 percent pay increase in 2012,” Burke and Reilly wrote in a letter to American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31 Executive Director Henry Bayer. Noting the tough economic times, the aldermen calculated the cost of the raises at $1.6 million.

And what exactly was that raise the aldercreatures voted themselves a little while back? 6%? And the raise for their staff? 5%? Evidently, shared sacrifice is a wonderful thing, as long as the aldercreatures aren't the ones bleeding.

Low Blow, SCC, that was a Low Blow! It was a "Cost of Living Adjustment" because "RAISE" sounded soo... pretentious.

It was the same year that the arbitrator gave us a 0% raise.
Fuck the City Council, and Fuck the Arbitrator.

Surprised??

This from two of the very same aldermen who VOTED FOR THE RAISE! The raise needed City Council approval, now these two thieves are "surprised" to learn that they voted for the raise!

To say nothing, of course, about the automatic 6% yearly aldermanic raise.

Yeah, sure, I'll share the pain... as soon as every last motherfucker walking around with a LINK card and/or any other type of TAXPAYER-SUBSIDIZED entitlement(s) has a minimum 20-25% reduction in these unearned and unappreciated benefits levied.

Section 8 vouchers can also be reduced at the same time our lovely state institutes policy capping the amount of live births covered for uninsured, unemployed and unwed people, and ending ANY type of care for illegal (oops...'undocumented') aliens on U.S. soil altogether. It's a Goddamned shame our military personnel are coming home from serving an ungrateful country and can't get adequate medical treatment for legitimate ailments while border jumpers and convicted felons are catered to and afforded smorgasbords of treatment options.

Maybe...MAYBE... we can talk about reinstating some of these "benefits" once the aforementioned drains on society know what it's like to shell-out the copay on a prescription and meet their yearly insurance deductible (presuming they're all caught-up on getting proper with that whole citizenship inconvenience thing). Gainful employment would also be a condition of continuing assistance.

Otherwise, Aldermen Burke and Reilly - and any of their ilk even briefly entertaining such as asinine proposal - can suck my left nut.

I am so disgusted. We live in the third largest city in the US and we have to close libraries. I was at the library on Tuesday and their was about 500 books to be shelved. The employees looked frazzled after day one. They have also dropped the number of books you can put on hold and good luck waiting for a book on hold.I waited three months.I hope we dont have bad weather on a Monday they usually use the libraries for cooling/heat shelters. The library is one of the few city services I use. What a joke

Most people do not have expense accounts and pay for their cell phones and vehicles out of their own pay. Not our leaders!! Although in their defense on this issue, Daley did give very generous packages to labor during his term to buy labor peace until after the olympics. These contracts are very expensive.

We have been informed by the Chicago Public Library that the Best of the Best event will not be held this year. Due to citywide staff reductions, branch libraries are only providing core services of reference and circulation; programming has been suspended indefinitely. The Children and Young Adult Services staff will be publishing a Best of the Best list and we will share that with you as soon as it is made available.
We have been fortunate to partner with CPL for the “Best of the Best” event in past years. Although we will not be able to come together to hear booktalks related to these books, we are grateful that Chicago Public Library is still able to create these lists to help us in our collection development decisions.

You should tell that to the teachers union in Chicago. You can bet they will ask for a hefty raise in pay and benefits or they will strike. CPD and CFD have always worked together. We both have made the ultimate sacrifice for this city and no dancing politician who wears tights will ever understand us. We need to stand together against the Mayor and his minions. Especially with all the crooked city, state and federal hacks that have been indicted What we need to worry about is our contract. Both CPD and CFD. We will get a raise and give nothing back to this city. When Daley gives back everything he took from this city including all the money he spent on trying to secure the Olympics, selling the meters and the skyway along with all the corruption. We will not take a pay cut or give up furlough days or a sick leave policy. Last time I checked CPD and CFD are the ones that have made the ultimate sacrifice for this city not some alderman.

I suggest CPD and CFD march together to two places in our full dress uniforms. No posters no loud speakers. Just pure silence. Once at City Hall in the middle of the street we line up in precision and we turn our backs on the Office of the Mayor and then march straight to Daley's House. Once there again we turn our back on Daley's House to remind him of what we think of him till this day. Imagine thousands of CPD and CFD officers in our dress blues with our white gloves marching together. Showing our honor, our professionalism but most of all reminding this city who keeps the predators at bay, who runs into burning buildings or who brings the dead to life. We pick one of the coldest days in January to show them that we are not scared of anything. Unions could easily organize this movement and every boss should walk side by side with the troops. Please publish this SCC. Sometimes all it takes is our presence and our uniforms will command respect. Remember dress uniforms for both CPD and CFD and upon arrival we turn our back to both the new Mayor and the past. Everyone knows they both in bed with each other. We will make sure the media across the country hears our voices without making a sound.
The guys are good. The leadership sucks.

"How about cutting the number of aldermen? Never hear the media ever bring this up. How about putting it on a ballot for all to vote on?"

It requires a change in the state law to cut the number of aldermen.

It'll take A LOT of city taxpayer action to get that to happen.

You know the aldermen will never do this without big time demands from the public. They won't do it on their own.

Dear west side inside do nothing

Many years ago I was sent to a beat rep meeting ( similar to CAPS meetings these days) I also opined that there be a cap on just how many babies the taxpayers should be obligated to pay for. I had few other thoughts along the same vein which I shared with the attendees.

The Dept decided to send me to the shrink over this

I still agree with your premise.

As for the aldermen who voted themselves a 6% raise and for this AFSCME deal, FUCK THEM esp Fast Eddie Burke

"Any idea why it's so hard to find a newspaper article about the 2010 5/6% raises for aldermen and their staff?

F'ing conspiracy?"

Yes, the articles are hard to find, but not impossible:

Salary Formula

The Municipal Code of Chicago defines the annual salary for aldermen. Under the code, all aldermen's salaries were set at $98,125 in 2006. Every year thereafter, the salary figure automatically adjusts for inflation, using figures from the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics. Raises take effect Jan. 1. Each alderman has the option of turning down a year's raise. To do so, an alderman must give the city budget director a sworn statement declining the raise by Sept. 15 of the preceding year.

Do as We Say, Not as We Do
The Chicago Public Schools are broke. Teachers have been asked to share the pain. Coaches have been asked to work for free. Bigger class sizes have been threatened. So why are CEO Ron Huberman and other top bureaucrats taking raises?

I agree. Nothing will happen until people decide to get off of their couches and computers and start taking action. That's what it's going to have to come to in order to stop the thieving politicians. Sacrifices will have to be made in order for all of us to do this. When will we all get fed up enough to remove them from their comfortable spots? The time has to come sooner than later.

Just a word from the Law Dept. where we have no union, and aren't allowed one: we haven't had a pay raise of any kind in 5 years, no COLA, no step increases, no nothin'.

The best we got: the end of furlough days, so that we stopped getting a pay cut. Maybe under government accounting that's a pay raise, I dunno.

So quit your bellyaching. Nobody should be guaranteed an ever rising standard of living. Nobody in the private sector is guaranteed that, and unionized governement workers with nice benefits shouldn't be flaunting their good fortune either, lest the voters notice.

Hate to break it to you and hate to sound arrogant, but the people of Chicago can live without you, sitting behind your desk at the law department. Not to make your job seem useless, but police and fire are more important. Sorry, but that's the truth. You don't protect citizens from criminals and you don't run into burning buildings. They can do without you in the office for five days. They can't do without us for one day. The politicians who you voted for haven't sacrificed a thing. Direct your anger about your benefits toward the politicians, not toward police and fire.

Why don't they knock down the number of Aldermen to equal the number of police stations (22), and then give them an office in the stations.... that should save some cash!

Whoever wrote this should think about running for office or should be the very least a Deputy on this job. I am the one who wrote about marching on city hall and Daley's House. You my friend are 100 percent right. The only thing your wrong about is they couldn't live without us for one hour not one day. We will not give up nothing to this city or take a pay cut. Great job in what you wrote. For some reason people in this society think the more degrees you have the more you should get paid. In our line of work that piece of paper means zero when the bullets start flying. One thing that Law Enforcement bought into is that you become a better police officer or leader if you have a Master's or Law Degree. Sorry gold stars, that doesn't mean jack when it comes to dealing with savages. Hang your degree on your wall as for me, I'll keep going to the range and mastering the basic tactics that will keep my partner and I safe and my front sight post will be on the predator when I pull the trigger. No wonder we have such idiots for bosses. I will coin the new term, "Educated Incompetency."

175,000 blacks relocated out of illinois because cops (no offense) can't tell criminals from victims. The ones still here are mostly too poor to relocate and now get attacked 5 times as much because everybody else moved. As for the Library workers, lay some off, most people go to the Library to use the Internet, there are internet Labs all over the city, with a little effort, patrons can find another place to access the www. And lay off some Alderpersons too, Approx 25 Alderpersons.

Last time I heard the employees at the law department were eligible and allowed to take the Chicago Police Department test. If the CPD has it so good, take the test and become a member
Testing is open to the public you know

Generally speaking, if "most" Chicago Public Library (CPL) patrons knew about bountiful Internet labs, the Monday CPL closings wouldn't be an issue.

During the Clinton era, phone companies "blessed" us with an Internet phone tax, which was supposed to provide computers and Internet access to the poor.

If "most people" solely rely on CPL computers, then where is the Internet phone tax money and where are the Internet connected computers?

Funny how at first he (Burke) fought Tiny Dancer's electability to run and now he is fallen into step with Tiny Dancer.

Burke was repeating his steps with King Daley II, first by opposing him in the 1980 Cook County State's Attorney's Democratic Primary and second by idol worshipping him (1989-2011).

Regardless of current and previous population estimates, Illinois' police officers use their intellect, common sense, education, training and (eventual) experience, to distinguish law abiding citizens/victims from miscreants.

Illinois' police officers aren't going to waste time, money and resources to (5 times) attack law abiding citizens/victims.

Depending on situation(s), people relocate for better weather, jobs, education and housing.

For Illinois' evacuees, factor in politics and high taxes too.

The "too poor to move" point doesn't fly, because Great Migration Blacks were able to relocate to Illinois, despite poverty. If poverty didn't stop them, then surely it won't stop Blacks now.
