The CDC took homicides off its list of the top 15 causes of death for the first time in 45 years, Bloomberg News reports. Homicides were responsible for 5.3 fatalities in every 100,000 people, the lowest rate since 1962.

I went to a meeting hosted by Ald. Mary O'Connor last night on how to appeal to get your taxes reduced. It was very informative, and all you have to do is fill out a form and hand it to the reps they have there before you leave.
I found out about it on a website called 'Everyblock' or something like that, that keeps you informed about what's going on in your neighborhood.
There is going to be another one for residents of 'Jefferson' township (check your tax bill for what township you're in) at Oriole Park--on the 25th, or whatever the date is from two weeks from yesterday (Thursday).
It was standing room only, so get there early. Senator Mulroe was there--I asked him what he's doing to protect police pensions and why no one forced the city to make their pension obligations for the last 20 years. Told him I enforce criminal statutes, who enforces the laws like the pension funding?
I did not get a straight answer. I don't think he knew. He said the law was poorly written and the city entered into an agreement they could never fulfill. He said he didn't think efforts to go after our pensions would be successful (yeah, right) and that our biggest threat would be the fund being depleted of funds.
I asked him why my father, who is 86 and retired from the Detroit Fire Dept. since he was 47 is still getting a pension considering Detroit is nearly bankrupt and why politicians are threatening to take ours when the city is not nearly in as dire straits as Detroit. He didn't know.
Senator Mulroe did author a bill that makes it a felony to point a weapon at police. Nice enough guy--to be fair, we didn't have a lot of time to talk. He did give me a card.
We should really start a letter-writing campaign bombarding lawmakers to protect our pensions. I am going to research who and what to write and will post at a later date.

Let's start with her deer-in-headlights look to every other question before she replied poorly to these same questions. The only question she had an immediate answer for was "Is your brother the 1/W WC in 011"?. When asked of she knew who her State Rep was, she DIDN'T KNOW. When asked if she'd be able to pick out her Congressman in order to approach him, say, down in Springfield while working on pension issues, her reply was something like "sure I'd be able to approach them to talk to them, but I don't know who they are really".
I don't know about you, but I want someone at least minimally knowledgeable in politics before I'd ever vote to have them represent me on issues dire to my existence. Kind of like wanting a neurosurgeon poking around in my coconut instead of an alley mechanic.
As for being "disrespected"??? Hardly. We let her know, in so many words, that she needed more experience and knowledge before she'd get our endorsement. If she can't handle the truth at this level, she'll get eaten alive later. The truth hurts sometimes. Sound familiar?? Her reacting to the truth and constructive crisitcism by almost balling her eyes out just reinforced our decision to give her the big "thumbs down".
Disrespected, huh? You sound like every ghetto rat that doesn't quite get her way. Just because someone's the police doesn't mean they have carte blanche. No go P.O. Stoppa if any of what I just wrote is correct. See if she can answer that correctly. There was nothing personal about our decision and no everyone can "win".

This is a confirmed incident. Happened a couple weeks ago. Sounds like the DSS handled it accordingly. The new breed on this job has a lot to learn. In addition, with all the negative changes taking place and all the white shirts getting moody because of the perceived screwing they are taking, it would be unwise to question the actions of a DSS (aka Lt.) or an XO (aka Capt.) due to the fact you might find yourself walking a beat in the furtherest reaches of whatever hell hole you work in. Some of them can be very vindictive little pricks.
In this case though, the fng was dead wrong and deserves whatever he gets.

Joe Lyons, the current 19th District State Representative is trying to give his seat to Robert Martwick, a life long machine hack tax attorney from Norridge, IL who is part of the Madigan/Berrios machine. Joe Lyons is personal friends with Mark Donahue. Mark Donahue, our ex-FOP president, sits on the FOP PAC along with Mike Shields, the current FOP President.
Now, little Mikey Shields knows that his days are numbered as president, so he needs to start making plans. He don't want to go back to working as a P.O. and take a 50% pay cut. So, he needs to start making political friends who can take care of him when his day comes. At the endorsement interview, Mike Shields torpedoed P.O. Sandra Stoppa. According to her, it was clear from when she walked in that she wasn't going to get the endorsement. Mike Shields then unloaded on her with ridiculous questions that were totally irrelevant to her running for office in an effort to protect our pensions. He then proceeded get the board to vote unanimously against her in favor of Martwick.
According to Mike Shields, Robert Martwick, a career machine hack from Norridge, would have our backs in Springfield better than one of our own.
So, to sum it all up, Mike Shields is a political sell-out trying to line himself up for a nice cushy job after his time at FOP comes to an end.

I went to a meeting hosted by Ald. Mary O'Connor last night on how to appeal to get your taxes reduced. It was very informative, and all you have to do is fill out a form and hand it to the reps they have there before you leave.
Too bad they change your multiplier and you just end up paying what they need to get out of you anyway.
It's a waste of effort my friend. There are no favors just the bottom line.

Other members asked her about her back ground and experience. She was asked if she knew who her Senator was and she had no clue. She is a good looking woman and may or may not be a good policewoman but she was lost at the interview and she would get eaten alive in Springfield.

SCC, before this ridiculous rumor gets legs, nip it in the bud right now. IAD have been informed they will be in charge of processing all mass arrests related to G8. More paranoia from a small group who insist on being "victims" at all costs. The only filming they will be doing are mugshots. Besides, as anyone with a year and a day on the job knows, IPRA would be investigating most of the complaints the typical copper would worry about during "riot control" activity. IAD and IPRA have not, do not and will not be working together.

Bekieve it or not folks this is a benefit that affects every officer.
If you need additional recovery time but could work administrativly for a couple weeks here or there the clocks starts at 365 days. That is for your ENTIRE career.
The qualifications to remain on limited or convalescent duty are the same for IOD as well as non IOD.
The reason the city put these restrictions in place was so that NO officer could sue the city under the ADA laws.
Wake up people, these are benefits that are being taken away from you and you want to be a smart ass and call someone a Medical abuser on a blog?????

Hello SCC, there is a rumor going around that a representative from legal affairs was at the refresher course for the G-8/Nato summit at Near North H.S. the other day. According to this rumor the representative from legal affairs allegedly told the class of tier 1 officers that they would not be allowed to carry their firearms or their O.C. spray on the front lines of the G-8/Nato summit in May. Again, this is a rumor ,but I was curious if you or any of your readers have any insight into this rumor.
As usual they promise 6-10 inches, but it's turn out to be 3 in the end, a'well!

I was there and I pray that you never get hurt or sick. The showing was poor for what we are about to lose. This does not only affect medical abusers but the whole department. Are you aware of what we will lose? Everyone with less than 15 years on the job should have been there. If we do lose the benefit we are all FUCKED plain and simple. With guys at 15 yrs on you have 365 days that will take you to 16 years on the job. At this point you will get 1 year disability for every 4 years on the job. At 16 you are eligible for 4 years on disability which you can carry until you reach your 20 yoj. Everyone else with less than 15 years needs to be careful out there. Cancer is known to hit certain districts more than others and heart problems are also big on this job. With this new order accommodations will no longer exist be careful who you call medical abuser tomorrow you may be looking at one in the mirror. As for the pregnant officers there is a form you will need to fill out from now on. This new order affects all members even IOD's.

I was working outside at 0830, raking the last of the leaves against my fences. At 0930, the snow was already coming down steadily. At 1030, my yard and tree branches were covered, the street was slick and the sidewalks were becoming difficult.
The trucks SHOULD have been out by then. The salt SHOULD have been ready by then. The crews SHOULD have been in place by then.
Maybe you forget there's a learning curve, every first real snow of the season. Drivers forget how to drive in the stuff. People forget to wear appropriate footwear. Those in a hurry don't allow enough time to get there.
I'm no fan of his and you can bash him all you want, on general principle, but when it snows, the equipment is SUPPOSED to be in place. Why bitch because it actually IS IN PLACE, for a change?

Hello SCC, there is a rumor going around that a representative from legal affairs was at the refresher course for the G-8/Nato summit at Near North H.S. the other day. According to this rumor the representative from legal affairs allegedly told the class of tier 1 officers that they would not be allowed to carry their firearms or their O.C. spray on the front lines of the G-8/Nato summit in May. Again, this is a rumor ,but I was curious if you or any of your readers have any insight into this rumor.

Why isn't Shields on the Pension committee given the fact that he is also our pension board rep? Wouldn't that make sense?

This is a conflict of interest for Shields. How can he fight for a officer who is challenging the pension board? He does not excuse himself from voting on the pension board yet he represents officers who need help with the pension? You cannot do it both ways, Mikey.

I thought that the three day training is at UIC.
The one day at the Academy.
And NNHS only had the Tactical Training Unit left there (No TARA)

Since this is a public forum, I think you miss the subtlety of the previous posters words. You and the original post should not be putting ANYTHING on a public blog about training for the G8 Summit, especially the location where numerous officers will be.
