Whoops, but no Harm

  • An elderly motorist drove a car to the end of a pier at Montrose Harbor late Tuesday, leaving the car teetering over the edge, a Chicago Fire Department spokesman said.

The driver, an elderly woman, was safely removed from the Volkwagen Jetta and didn't fall into the 36-degree lake water, authorities said.

The Jetta was similarly rescued without plunging into the harbor, Fire Department spokesman
We had no idea you could still get out that far on the piers. We'll have to remember that next time we go smelting.

Lady was obviously coming down here to Tampa for the winter, on the only route she knows, U.S. 41. Her GPS, bought by her grandkids told her to "turn left NOW, and she did."

That might not be a bad idea. Wildings, boat accidents, crowd gathering because of a problem could be spotted. Have them monitored not only be Emergency Management but also by the Park District.

How about an Emergency Phone?

Actually, the so-called pier is a portion of an entrance ramp to the proposed Richard M. Daley Memorial Bridge across Lake Michigan to Benton Harbor. It will be the world's longest bridge and will be designated as Interstate 96, the 4-lane highway continuing directly on to Detroit.

Daley realized that the construction of the I-96 suspension bridge would be a steal at only about $13,000,000,000,000,000.00 ($13 QUADRILLION dollars). The federal government will kick in $20 million. No-bid contracts have already been finalized with Walsh Construction and Vanecko Enterprises for completion set for October, 2029.

Thats no easy feat. One has to negotiate the Bird Sanctuary, sand drifts,& narrow pathways. Me thinks granny had alterior motives and bailed at the end.

That pier has a steel-cable handrail running down the middle. Either side is pretty narrow. You'd have to be very determined to get to the end of that pier, even in a compact car!
