The Future?

  • The Ann Arbor Police Department will now allow people to file police reports for minor crimes on the Internet through the department’s website, officials announced Monday.

According to a statement released by the department, people now can make police reports for harassing phone calls, theft, vandalism, identity theft, lost or damaged property or private property crashes by visiting www.a2gov.org/police.

The statement said these crimes were chosen because “these reports typically do not require a police interview or follow up investigation but they are often needed for insurance claims or other matters.”

We have almost no doubt this is on the way. It would impact crime stats, too, if they make it just complicated enough to frustrate the computer illiterate (elderly, poor, minority, etc.) And if they combine this with a 9-1-1 revamp of calls that police will no longer respond to? You're looking at a double digit "drop" in crime percentages.

O.T.:

Hey, what happened to the crossing flags?

Have they been stolen out of their buckets, or have the funds for the program been mismanaged before the purchases were even made?

As for the future, how about putting out buckets of handcuffs so that offenders can walk up and arrest themselves

"The statement said these crimes were chosen because “these reports typically do not require a police interview or follow up investigation but they are often needed for insurance claims or other matters.”

There seems to be a growing incomprehension that people report wrongdoing because it is wrong, and they want some acknowledgement on the part of society that something bad happened to them -- maybe even with the forlorn hope that their property will be found and returned, or their assailant arrested and punished.

Every place isn't "What's in it for me" town like this f__ing city seeems to be so much of the time.

Be kind.

We can do this here in Chicago also to a certain degree.
I found this information under clearpath.

Can I make a police report online?
You can make an online report for lost property or theft less than $500. Click on the Online Crime Reporting link in the left column of this website. Other police reports must be made by calling 311 from within Chicago, or (312) 746-6000 from outside Chicago. To make a traffic accident report or a missing persons report, you must personally visit a district police station and make such a report in person.

Chicago can add:
-I want my baby daddy/husband to leave report.
-My kid(s) bein' disrespectful report.
-My boyfriend/kid stole/took my car to the store w-out permission report.
-Everyone got a gun report.
-My kid wont go to school report.
-My kids a jag so the whole neighborhood came to my house to kick his/her ass report.
-My friend wont share his/her crack report.
-My favorite, "my boyfriend wants anal sex since he got outta prison, but I want him to stop" domestic call/report. This really was a call.

All I can say is thanks to them and all the extra attention they need from the Police, we ALL have job security. Police, Fire Depts, Hospital staff, Liquor stores, drug dealers (both legal and non) tax payers, Democrats, JJ Jr., Lawyers, Psychiatrists, Social workers, the Media, etc, all included.....

We all appreciate the calls. Keep dialing those free 911 phones for your friends to come. We will give you all the reports you want/need, the smile included is also free.

It seems all the poor & stupid folks I encounter as a beat officer know how to work Facebook.

Just fashion the new system ala Facebook and the victims could pen their own police reports with a first hand account of the incident documented in their own parlance. It seems all the poor & stupid folks I encounter as a beat officer know how to work Facebook!

It was at these locations where crimes could be reported and you could pick up an R.D Number at window #2.

Back in the day, when 018 had dozens of street prostitutes, there was a "whore car" responsible for locking up the hookers every night and keeping them from stealing all the naive, drunken tourists' wallets.

Some of those girls were street whores at night but were college students during the day and were clean, bright and articulate. Often, they would ask to TYPE THEIR OWN arrest reports and court complaints in order to make certain they could make the last transport of the night to Women's Central Detention at 11th and State so they'd get a continuance or bonded out at Women's court. Back then, if they didn't get downtown before the court call, they had to sit in jail for 24 hours until court the next day, costing them customers on the street AND causing them to miss school.

Damn, I miss the old days!

Sometimes it is good and sometimes you talk to a totally disinterested police officer who tries to either talk you out of it or tell you you can't file a report because youwaited too long ( one week). There is no sense in sending a police officer to take a minor report. It ties up manpower and lets face it, no one is going to investigte the minor stuff in the first place. Even 10s of thousands in credit card theft is not investigated by CPD.

Was i seeing things or was that Ernie Brown's Lt. Karyn M. getting out of a city car this morning at 35th street. You mean to tell me that this COMP STAT Lt neeeds a city car with city gas? For what? The newly appointed XO's don't even have a city car and they might have to respond to a legit emergency within their districts from home. What is Karyn going to respond to? The Chiefs call from home?

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Oh how true. This is why people get upset. There are different rules for different people. There is no way this Lt. should have a take home car. Why does anyone have a take home car when they have no patrol duties and or DO NOT respond to emergency situations. This is just a flat out perk for a Lt that is a waste of money and a car that could be assigned to personnel who could utilize it for a police function and not as a peasonal vehicle because this Lt works for the superintendent. They are cutting costs and budgets everywhere else on this dept so why not with this car and numerous others that are assigned to NON EMERGENCY RESPONSE PERSONNEL. Why should the city pay for this LT to travel to and from work. Leave the car in the lot and if the Lt or anyone else in that office needs a vehicle for a police related function, they have one at their disposal.

This is a good thing. Why waste police resources on reports that will go nowhere. most of these kind of reports are about getting insurance reimbursement anyway.

OT: I have to say that the demise of the department is evident when you drive by the police academy, you see citizens letting their dogs pee and poop in the LAWN all around the academy. When did the academy grounds become a park? Hey citizens... would you like it if dogs pooped in front of your office? Come on now this is really disgusting. Can you not have any respect for the police or for a public building. IT IS NOT A DOG PARK!

Ever since the late 19th century, the Chicago City Council has tended to suffer from a rather poor reputation: ineffective, low ethical standards, an old boys club. Back then, men such as Alderman "Bathhouse" John Coughlin were known for using their offices to create wealth for themselves, while furnishing the Levee, a red light district on the Southside, with a wide variety of naughty entertainment.

Today, most of the aldermen are less colorful, but reputational issues remain. For example, since 1970, 31 aldermen have been convicted of crimes, while the city council has largely failed to serve as a legislative check on the leadership of Chicago mayors. With that in mind, it seems appropriate for Chicagoans to put forth a modest proposal for reforming our city government.

First, we should dramatically reduce the size of the city council. Currently, with 50 members, Chicago has one of the largest city councils in the United States. A more appropriate size would be 17 members, each representing approximately 159,000 constituents. This would make a Chicago alderman's representative duties similar to that of New York and Houston legislators and less than the 250,000 constituents that a Los Angeles municipal councilman represents.

This reform would have several benefits, including strengthening the city council's power relative to the mayor. With larger political bases, it is likely that some Chicago alderman would grow in stature and that the council as a whole would become a more effective check on the executive branch of the city. The shrinking of the city council would also lessen the chance of "rubber stamp" votes on important issues, such as the $1.2 billion parking meter deal -- later known as the parking meter fiasco -- in December 2008.

In addition, with a smaller city council, the position of alderman could be converted from part-time to full-time, and the salary of each representative could be more than doubled from its current $110,000 level. This structural change would draw more talented individuals into city government, reduce the temptation of corruption and actually lower the overall budget for the council.

Second, we should set term limits for every elected official in Chicago city government, including the mayor and the aldermen. This proposal is based on a view of human nature consistent with that espoused by the British politician and historian Lord Acton, "Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." A study of our long-serving mayors of Chicago also supports this idea: the majority of their accomplishments occurred during the first decade in office, while their fatal flaws tended to surface near the end of their mayoral reigns. Similarly, the historical record indicates that nothing good is accomplished by aldermen who have stay in office for decades. With that in mind, two terms of six years seems appropriate for the mayor, while alderman could be limited to three terms of four years. These new term limits would encourage our city representatives to bring vigor, ethics and innovative ideas to their offices, knowing that a return to the private sector was inevitable.

Finally, we should push the city council to stop paying legal fees for aldermen who are under criminal investigation. Although there is no formal policy on the matter, it has been the Finance Committee's custom since the early 1980s to pay the legal fees of aldermen accused of criminal acts. This inappropriate use of taxpayer money should stop now.

Chicagoans should have the opportunity to go to the polls and vote on these proposals -- a smaller, more incentivized city council; term limits for all politicians; and a requirement that aldermen under criminal investigation should pay their own legal fees -- in a binding referendum. Let the voters decide.

I'm no fan of inspectors or nor am I an inspector but he is a jagoff for doing his job enforcing the rules you are supposed to follow? At least the so called "jagoff" gave you a warning before he just wrote your ass. I guess you were brought up by never receiving punishment for wrong doing and agree every little league kid deserves a trophy no matter how much he or his team sucks. Do your job, wear your uniform properly, and look professional and there won't be a problem. And if you get written up enjoy your day off. Add it to the weekend(at least the time off won't be denied).

there was an escape from 008 lockup about 0045 hours. one p.o. took a restroom break and second p.o. was escorting arrestee into cell when arrestee over powered p.o. taking the master key to all exit doors for lockup the officer was then locked in a cell. p.o. returns and discovered partner locked in cell.

-----------------------------------
Are you fucking kidding me? Are they PPOs, for one I never leave my partner when escorting a prisoner into the back, I even find my partner when its time. Officers have been killed escorting prisoners to lock-up or on hospital runs. You never have less than one PO bring a guy to the back, At times, I've seen four POs escort guys back there. What a fucker, its bathroom time, and your partner could of been killed.

The Crook Co SAO is completely unable to prosecute drug crimes (among others), so they've created a half dozen "diversion courts" to divert cases from the stats books. Decent arrests that never result in prosecutions, because diverted cases never become criminal prosecutions.

Many years ago when John Thomas, the former 1st Deputy, was a detective at A/4, he envisioned jokingly, of course, COP IN A BOX. Just like McDonalds, where citizens could pull in and speak to an unseen person whose voice came back to you like he/she was speaking through mashed potatoes.

1/11/2012 05:53:00 AM

Thank you for solving a mystery that has puzzled many veteran members. They have long wondered how JT rose to the high-ranking position of First Deputy Superintendent. Now we know. He was not thinking outside the box or inside the box. He was thinking about the box and it's possibilities. Now, years later, we are all working in the box, but a slightly different box than the one he envisioned. Thank you, and RIP JT.

"Back in the day, when 018 had dozens of street prostitutes, there was a "whore car" responsible for locking up the hookers every night and keeping them from stealing all the naive, drunken tourists' wallets.

Damn, I miss the old days!"

amen......did the same......worked the whore car in 018, straight midnights for a couple of years, no weekends off.....had a blast....the girls knew more about my family than I did (I saw them in court three days a week, more than I saw my family), but they were a tremendous source of information re: what was going on on the street (not much different than now, I would suppose)..
