Greek Riots

No one has any real idea how the entire European Union is going to collapse or when. But there sure are a lot of cops getting hurt overseas:
  • Greek lawmakers on Monday approved harsh new austerity measures demanded by bailout creditors to save the debt-crippled nation from bankruptcy, after riots in Athens and other cities left stores looted and burned and more than 120 people hurt.

The historic vote paves the way for Greece’s European partners and the International Monetary Fund to release $170 billion in new rescue loans, without which Greece would default on its mountain of debt next month and likely leave the eurozone — a scenario that would further roil global markets.

  • At least 45 businesses were damaged by fire, including several historic buildings, movie theaters, banks and a cafeteria, in the worst riot damage in Athens in years. Fifty police officers were injured and at least 70 protesters were hospitalized.
Not a really good ratio of cops-to-protestors injured. There will always be more rioters, ,but it takes a while to train up replacement cops. Prayers for our brothers and sisters in arms in Greece.

America had better take a good look at Greece. The same stuff is going to happen here in the near future. Once the elections are over in November there will be a big push by the Federal and all other governments to tighten the belt. This recession/depression is not over by any means. We are in a mountain of debt just like Greece. Lots of hard times ahead folks.

This is what happens when politicians get the bright idea to buy votes with tax money and start spending way more then they have. They bankrupt the country and everyone who invested in their society lose everything. In Greece they forced everyone with retirement savings to invest it in government bonds and now it is all gone.

As for the people, you can bet those rioters are not the productive people of Greece who are the real victims. They are the welfare population and socialists that for decades sold their votes for handouts and lived by mooching off the productive. Now they have to fend for themselves and since they were raised in a culture where they didn’t have to work for their wealth they have no respect for the property of others. If the government won’t give it to them they will take it.

We are watching our future unfold in Greece.

Did anyone notice that the government accountability office revealed that last year Washington spent $1.3 Trillion more then we collected in taxes? There isn’t enough money in the whole world to finance our budget deficits and it won’t be long at this rate before we’re bankrupt and our own parasites take to the streets stealing what the politicians can no longer give them.

Voting for Obama this November will be like voting to be a Greek.

An instructor in the acadamy has been testing personal fire extinguishers. They're reasonable when you consider that it may take 5 minutes for the medic behind you to come put you out. Your riot gear will feel like molten plastic as it cooks your skin. Also in the video, it appeared the cops were UNARMED!! Use that uniform check, get prepared.

My wife and I visited Athens in 2010, the riots were going on back then as well, but it seemed like a good idea to go, and it was.

I had the chance to talk to a couple Athenian officers. Very nice guys, very interested in how we do things here. I even ended up with a nice St. Michael icon.

I hope the injured officers make a speedy recovery, and I hope the powers that be over here are watching this and thinking about how to contain this coming May.

One of the "Inside Do Nothings" at Research & Development should be getting a live feed to Athens to see what kind of equipment they are using and what kind of injuries they are sustaining. This info is vital to preparing for May. Remember, Greece is in NATO and some of these anarchists may be here to protest in May. If they come here they will have been seasoned combat experienced terrorists, up against our hair gel social network experienced tac teams. R&D needs to check at what temperature hair gel ignites. I watched the news accounts of the trouble in Greece and saw the Molotovs getting thrown at the coppers and the physical attacks on the officers.

Oakland was just a preview of what these assholes have in store for us. I can't help but think that will be our city in about 90 days.

If the City won't do it, it will be up to us to prepare. Like the other poster said, if you have to buy your own equipment-do so. Get on a treadmill or elliptical and build up your strength and stamina.

In the great scheme of things It is better to have the proper equipment and not suffer a serious injury that could have been prevented.

There are some who say the city should provide it, they should-but it is apparent they won't. Better spending some $$ than suffering through the pain of broken bones or burns.

The Greeks are a bunch of bums. They want the rest of Europe to pay for their lavish social welfare state. Why should a Greek be able to retire at age 50 (a Greek can retire even if they didn't work a day in their life) while a German has to wait until 62? Why should the harder working people of Europe bail out the lazy ones? It all sounds familiar doesn't it?

Well the above was meant to be funny but it's frightfully true in a way. Greece 'WAS' (centuries ago) the birthplace of democracy but became and still is a socialist country. The U.S. is absolutely heading in that direction but the difference is there's tons of individual wealth to lose in the process. If the Greeks are going bananas now for losing what little they had in the first place, imagine if the general population had what 'WE' have. Biggest difference is it will go by without much protest from the public and while I'm no advocate of civil unrest and rioting (and will be on the line with the rest of the P.O.'s), there's a part of me that is glad to see protesters lining up to march for their beliefs.

Time for the 101st Airborne, Chicago in May.

Oops, they're deployed.

Call up the National Guard.

Oops, They're deployed.

Local suburbs aren't going to ride in this rodeo, thanks to city politics.

Greece's debt is 162% of it's GDP, America's is closing in at 100%.
Once again obama wants to spend another trillion dollars that we're going to borrow from China.
40 cent's out of each dollar that the USGovt. spends is borrowed.

I think you may be a bit over-worried, the Greeks have far greater state employment and the Left made a lot more headway with the proles.

BTW do you know the name of the Greek PM who solves the Debt Crisis and ends the chaos?

A: General Junta

SCC,

In all seriousness I was in Athens last June on an assignemt when the demonstrations turned violent. I pray that we do not see similar activtiy in Chicago. If we do I think the following items would be helpful.

There is a difference between Demonstrators and Protestors. Demonstrators march peacefully, Protesters show up to start trouble.

At all cost - Hold The Line: It seemed that Protestors seemed to zero in on younger agressive officers. The tactic was to taunt those officers and lure them away from the line into the crowd. That fractures the line and can cause addtional issues as the lone officer may require a rescue by other personnel. Protestors are always looking for the way to breakdown the structure of riot personnel.

The personal fire extinguisher idea is a good one. I personally observed (2) officers on fire after taking hits from petrol bombs.

Avoid using polyblend uniforms in the event fire bombs are used. The Riot Police in Greece looked like they wore only cotton uniforms. Cotton burns, poly melts.

Wear safety glasses under your helmet face masks. The throwing of paint and other items such as rocks and bricks was popular so extra eye protection is a good measure.

Carry a canteen or wear a camelback so that you can hydrate or decontaminate if needed.

Elbow, Knee Pads and a Cup are also a good idea. The protesters were wearing them, along with helmets.

Do not let protesters push/back you into an area that has no egress route.

I worked all the Bulls Championship (the majority of which on the Westside), World Cup and the DNC. The actions after the Bulls wins paled compared to my experience in Athens.

Hope this helps some of the younger Officers out there, Be Safe.

a new book at Library > BOOMERANG > suggested reading for insight as to where all this mountain of debt is leading.
This book is a fascinating read that focuses in on real life examples of what is happening in the everyday lives of citizens in Greece AND Ireland as the DEBT begins to destroy everything as they have known it.
Then there is a chapter about a billionaire Texan named Kyle Bass who has placed bets in the market > betting that OUR national leaders are going to totally blow it, they won't resolve our debt resulting in the worst case scenario's.
To read it will be to become alarmed at what we are facing in the not too distant future.

The uniforms are a fire resistant material and they have special pockets for a small fire extinguishers that each officer carries. Also the helmets have a leak proof face shield.
Many european countries have had these for years.
In Chicago, they do not want to waste any valuable federal money on cops when they can spend it on other things, suce as bosses pay.

I'm not a cop ... nor a politician, but I will say that if I were the leader of a country where protesters threw firebombs and bricks at my police, I would announce that I will immediately post snipers and cameramen on rooftops and will "shoot on site and without warning" anyone with materials in their hands which could cause the death or serious injury to any of my uniformed officers or to innocent civilians.

Half a dozen videotaped casualties should do the trick.

REMEMBER THIS WHEN YOUR PENSION IS REDUCED IF YOU HAVE LESS THAN 16YRS ON THE JOB YOUR FUKED. New laws mean no new money going into the pension= reduced benefits. Next they will offer lump sum payments So you can get 100K off the top =cops will eat it up! Don't do it. Then when pension is lacking money lump payments will be off the table then little money for you Watch and learn it's coming. Federal law is in place for this right now-Coffee Maker

Bad there, Greece has to cut down its spending to get a bailout from EU.

What I remember from TV tonight -- minimum wage drops from $1000 to $800 per month, sales tax 23% and up, gasoline $10 per -- is it liter there? -- and of the under-25 age group, 50% are unemployed.

Rough. Not everyone is sucking on some welfare tit, there are a lot of ordinary working people trying to make it and getting ground to death.
