Taste Numbers Up

  • Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Monday proclaimed his shrunken and revamped Taste of Chicago a success and said he plans to do more of the same next year.

By cutting the Taste in half, bumping it to mid-July and charging for concert seats at the Petrillo bandshell, Emanuel led some people to fear he was trying to kill the premier summer festival that had become a drain on Chicago taxpayers.

Those fears turned out to be unfounded.

  • Overall, attendance was 1.2 million or an average of 240,000 for each of the five days.

That’s up 5,000-a-day from last year’s draw of 2.35 million over five days, which was down 11 percent from 2010 and 37.5 percent from the event’s 2006 and 2007 heyday.

Restaurant revenues for the 2012 Taste were not yet known.

Last year, the 59 participating restaurants made $4.9 million — 20 percent less than the year before.

We're sure they'll release those numbers in a few weeks when it won't really matter and no one is paying attention.

On the police side though, there is word that on two of the days of Taste, there were actually zero arrests for anything, an unheard of occurrence. Maybe we can get another ribbon if it went that well.

And why would we suddenly start believing any of the City's numbers now?
Oh, and if you really think there'll be a Taste of Chicago next year, you're certifiably insane.

Local newspaper says: no matter how you measure it Taste was a huge success...

Really?

Then why do most of the pictures we see are not of people eating but of a group of about 10~12 kids playing in a sprinkler?

More magic math some would say.

For example if Taste had 2.35 million people last year and Taste is such a big draw then why did we only see a lousy 5,000 per day increase in attendance when we cut the length of the fest in half?

If we crammed 2.35 million people in five days instead of the ten days then Yes, I would call it a HUGE success but it did not happen.

Some of the vendors reported increased sales but isn't that what you would expect when you cut the number of restaurants?

I mean when overall when you have over one million less people in attendance just think of the lost parking revenue alone to the city!

Anyways.. I call b.s. and I'll bet the fools that bought seats for the concert portion will not be stupid enough to do that again.

I call bs on the number of supposed attendees. There is no way to comfortably squeeze that many people into a four block radius each day. More lies from Rahm.

Back in the early 90's the "rule" was, no arrests unless absolutely necessary.
For the media types out there the logic was, if there are no arrests then there is/was no crime.

That's the Chicago way.

If I'm reading this right --

"Attendance was only about half what it was six years ago."

Seems to fit the rest of Chicago's pattern of decline.

I went to the taste for the last time about 5 years ago. My wife and I got there around 11am and had to leave around 2pm because the shitheads started early. Packs of 10 to 20 young black males pushing into people, screaming obscenities and gang affiliations. That night they reported a large gang fight had occurred.

Does anyone really wonder why no one goes to the taste anymore, or is it not politically correct to tell the truth?

I will never go back. Thanks to all you liberal pieces of shit that turned yet another wholesome, family oriented event into a violent gang banger fest. Ohh..and don't forget the lakefront beaches, Lincoln park zoo, and downtown.

Come to think of it, I have never taken my family anywhere in the city. I PAY for Brookfield zoo, I PAY to take them to museums outside of the city, I PAY to take them to water parks and other beaches.

Now I'm not as smart as an elected official, but it makes sense to me to try to attract people to city events that actually have the money to spend, and can act like a human being and make it enjoyable for others, instead of empowering people who don't have money, don't intend on spending any money, show up just to cause problems, and cost the city in lawsuits and manpower because of their animal-like behavior.

Or are the elected officials just cultivating votes?

Thanks for taking my city away from me. You can have detroit and all the animals that vote for you. I'm leaving as soon as I can and I'll watch Chicago burn down from another state.

Just got back into town last night from camoing with the family in central Indiana. Spoke to a couple of people, without them knowing that I was the Police who stated that "we used to go to Chicago for a long weekend to shop and things but with all the murders and attacks even in the tourist areas why take the chance. It's much easier and nicer going to Indy, they have done a fantastic job building up their downtown area".

Can't say I blame them. I've been to Indy and yes it is a nice place. I think I'll take a roadtrip to Indy to do the shopping (less tax), dining and cultural events. Don't have to worry about getting run over by the flash mob of animals.

As SCC speculated farther down the page --

"And if [various neighborhood CeaseFires are] not affiliated with each other, are they actively warring like other gang factions? We can't wait for the first CeaseFire on CeaseFire shooting."

Looks like we're getting awfully close.

Another parallel here to the street gangs -- no discipline, no control from the top.

Here they are, Dr. Slutkin's famous "Interrupters" -- doing the one infallible thing that always leads to lethal violence in these circles.

Nighttime party, liquor, drugs, music, girls, "sekyooty" says who gets in who doesn't.

An argument starts...then a push in the chest, back down the steps.

You know the rest.

Tinder box, flash point on a hot summer night.

Oh -- how's the new Medical Examiner doing on that 29-year-old man who died right in the Obama headquarters? Do we have a report yet, as the law requires?

...or is this strictly Choom Gang stuff, mob bidness?

I counted over 12 million in attendance and estimate in excess of 30 million $$ in food sold. Best Taste ever.

Next year I predict 15 million people will attend the new, improved Taste of Chicago consisting of 6 vendors and sponsored by Jelly Belly Jelly Bean Co. held for three days in the plaza of Daley Center and run by the Daley & Vanecko Exposition Presentation Company LLC.

The 2013 Taste of Chicago will likely gross over $250.00 and will then be sold to LAZ Taste of Everything Company. The City of Chicago will guarantee the gross proceeds will be in excess of $25 million a year with 10% increases per year for 150 years. The new deal privatizing the Taste will be hammered out by the law firm of Daley & George and will be rushed through the City Council in a day and a half and the contract will be declared secret with a $50 Billion penalty to be paid to LAZ and Daley & George if one word is ever revealed. The entire deal will then be published in the Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune simultaneously.

Frank Main's Pulitzer Prize will be spotted up for auction on eBay.

Alderman Ed Burke and Ald O'Connor will declare this deal the best ever and will promptly resign the City Council to take executive positions with LAZ along with former journalists Frank Main and Fran Spielman. The City Council will unanimously approve this deal in record time.

All aldermen will see increases to their aldermanic discretionary fund of $10 million each and all aldermen will be awarded new Mercedes Benz S500 autos out of the kindness of Loeber Motors yearly for life.

The City of Chicago will then declare bankruptcy and all labor contracts will be declared null and void. Rahm Emanuel will announce he wants to spend more time with his family and decline to run for re-election after signing an executive order awarding himself armed police protection forever. Illinois Supreme Court Judge Anne Burke will immediately sign an order upholding this protection.

Alderman Beale, Roland "Tombstone" Burris and Jesse "Moodman" Jackson Jr. will be the only candidates for Mayor in the next election.

The FOP Hall will close and re-open as a 24 hour nightclub and brothel in partnership with V.I.P. Inc. and Finkl Steel International.

Then get ready for the zombie apocolypse.

Oh. Not long ago, someone was attempting to rub our noses in the wonderfulness of Toronto.

Two killed in shooting at Toronto street party, 20 injured

Reuters – 3 hrs ago

"TORONTO (Reuters) - Two people were killed and about 20 injured, including an infant, in a late-night shooting at a Toronto street party, raising fears of a rise in gun crime in Canada's largest city.

"Police said it was too early to say what prompted the shooting, which took place barely six weeks after two people were killed and six wounded in a gang-related weekend shoot-out at a downtown shopping mall.

"A young man and a young woman were killed in the latest shooting, police said. Many of the injured were hurt in the panic that ensued after shots were fired at around 10:40 p.m on Monday.

"One eyewitness told CityNews TV that the shooting took place at an annual barbecue block party that had been scheduled for Sunday and then moved to Monday after heavy weekend rainstorms. Police said they had unconfirmed reports that more than 200 people were at the party when the shooting occurred.

"I am shocked and disgusted by this senseless act of violence," said Toronto Mayor Rob Ford in a statement.

Six weeks ago Ford described the downtown mall shooting where two people died as an isolated incident in "the safest city in the world".

"Extra-alarm fire involves 4 buildings on West Side"

I haven't been by this location yet but my guess is that the mayor is going to have to add to his board up building list eh?

Oh-well, there goes another $80,000 for the clouted board-up company.

Life is good. Business is booming. As fast as the mayor can board them up or tear them down new locations are created. JUST LIKE DETROIT!!

Of course, or course it was a big success. hahaha. what did you expect the mayor to say!

250,000 tickets per day or was it 250,000 people per day?

Yeah, if ticket sales averaged 250,000 a day...what they don't tell you is that tickets are sold in blocks of 12 for $8.00.

Do the math on last years numbers.

$2.09 spent per person on average if you divide the revenue by the attendance!

Also, this year, only about 66% of the concert tickets were sold.

I've heard they had 15,000 seats up for sale and only sold maybe 10,000.

Kind of hard to believe that if
attendance was so high (250,000/day) that only about 4% opted to buy seats

#FAIL#

When the city was drawing 3.6 million people at this event the city claimed to have spent $8 million dollars on it -- the city also claimed that the city gained from $80 million dollars from additional spending outside the Taste from the visitors.

Do the math.. a big success alright ha! They say the city was losing money on Taste back then and now the attendance is cut to 1/3 of what it was -- so what do you suppose the revenue numbers will show?

Meanwhile other fest and fairs around the nation are showing record attendance and profits. Guess people are wising up and don't want to be taxed, fined and fee'd to death.

The people want a different kind of

'BANG FOR YOUR BUCK'

That was probably me, but I wasn't attempting to rub it in. T.O.'s not perfect, but I was showing the difference in overall crime between two cities with roughly the same population and multi-ethnic demographics.

This is the worst shooting in the city's history, but we're still looking at a murder rate 1/10th of yours. The average citizen isn't freaking out here and we're not getting robbed downtown. Nearly all of the people who get killed by guns here are pilgrims of the crack dealing variety, in the NE and NW corners far away from civilized society, so it doesn't affect most people.
