Way to Raise Morale

We can hardly wait to bring in a bunch of numbers for the boss:
  • Just an FYI for the FOP and any other secret readers of this blog. The commander of 008 is refusing to allow officers the day off for the first annual J. Kupczyk golf outing.

The commander expects the overworked troops to pay $80 for a day of golf and food and no libations because they have to come into work right after. The commander was told that he could ask for officers from adjoining districts but refused to do so to accommodate the Officers who actually worked for Kupczyk. The answer to all of this was to move the golf outing to October sometime after the "children" are back in school and the violence settles down...wink wink and maybe then the Officers could get time due but no guarantees were or have been made. This is what passes for leadership in this department.

The XO of this district also likes to brag about how he has all this money in deferred comp and how the commander allows him to adjust his schedule to accommodate his family life....how nice!

I did not want to take away from the original post but wanted to share this info. Great job by the officers and glad you are ok. Excellent job and keep up your spirits! "The day soldiers stop bringing you their problems is the day you have stopped leading them. They have either lost confidence that you can help or concluded you do not care. Either case is a failure of leadership." Colin Powell
Somewhere, Kup is shaking his head in disgust.

That was Kups favorite saying and had it printed all over the station. He didnt have to worry, he was a gentlman and everyone liked working for him. When it came to running the district It was the troops first, then the numbers and bosses. He knew if you took care of the troops first then everything else would fall right into line... The numbers of kups time in 008 were evidence of that. They had press conferences in 008 about how it had the biggest drops of all crimes across the board for 2011. When kup died and we got new leadership it all went downhill fast... very fast. 008 now has the 3rd highest homicide rate in the city, the first highest rate of robbery and burglary and it is number 2 in shootings... yep, great job boss. Your really motivating us to go out and work for you... not to mention the one guy off per day per watch rule. no thanks. Ill do nothing for you. anyone who does is a fool..complete fool. Long live KUP we miss ya big guy.

In 003 on midnights multiple people were denied next saturday (all denied had personal days in for months).A lot had trips planned for almost a year. No reason for the denial. I was thinking they would claim manpower, but with at least 3 outside units in 003 at all times, that can't be it...

We could solve this shit so easy. Your average officer gets 4 Personal Days and 5 Baby Furlough days. Imagine if everyone of us cashed those in at the end of the year since they won't let us use them anyway. It comes out to roughly 25 million dollars. Now just imagine if everyone took all of their OT in pay in addition to selling back BFD's and Personals. I personally prefer to use my time and spend it away from this job with my family and friends but if we're going to have to start begging them to use time that they owe us and wondering up until the last minute whether or not we're going to be off... what's the point? The assholes might as well just pay me then.

008 is packed full of cops, so I don't get the manpower shortage claim. The only way that downtown will take notice is if everybody leaves 008. Then they will realize that they have a command problem when 150-200 PAR forms land on there desk. The whole "I'm not doing a thing" doesn't work because he can claim that there is so many 911 calls for service that it doesn't allow time for proactive police work(it is summer in the 008th district). So if u guys/gals in 008 are truely unhappy I'm sure 003,004,005 or the 006th districts would be happy to have ya. But if u would rather complain on a daily basis hoping the problem will fix itself then enjoy your long summer with no TIME DUE then by all means stay.
About 12 years ago there was a similar problem in th 007th district. The problem was not fixed until there was a mass exodus of the troops.

ANOTHER WAY TO RAISE MORALE!

Emanuel wants to make Chicago more immigrant-friendly

The city will continue its policy that no agency will inquire about the immigration status of people approaching the city for services and the Chicago Police Department will not question crime victims, witnesses and other law-abiding residents about their legal status.

Police officers will be trained, and the department will continue to cooperate with federal authorities in investigating and apprehending violent criminals who may be undocumented immigrants.

the story about the 1st Annual Memeorial Outing is true. McNaughten will not allow outside troops in to cover the officers that would like to attend out of respect for Kup nor will he allow any more, than his personally required 36 cars manned on 3rd watch,to have time due. Kup was a true gentleman and genuinely cared about his troops. McNaughten doesn't give a damn. Blue shirts are held in contempt, as Sgts are borrowed to allow time off but PO's do not matter. I want to have all the wives and children of officers denied time for family functions come in and assemble at the desk and demand he address them on his manpower requirements. the officers who are being denied time due are, for the most part, trying to attend family events and subsequently, it is the families that are being effected. Perhaps one of those informational marches in front of the station with little kids hold signs saying, "Commander, why couldn't my Dad take me to the Sox game with the tickets he was given for his service?" or "why can't my Dad come to my Birthday party?" Do you think it would make the news or for that matter do you think it would make a difference. I think he will just avoid it like has avoided all other interactions with the troops, in the same cowardly way he has since he came to 008. Just slip in and slip out. No contact no contraversy. and I will do the same....no contact, no numbers, no work and more officers are coming around to my way thinking each day. McNaughten is so incompetent, just like many other "bosses" that he can't even see what he has done. Kup was truly a boss. A boss can command respect and does not have to demand repsect from his troops. Not many supervisors, of any rank, can do that these days. There was once an old saying,(and it wasn't that long ago) FAMILY FIRST, and fuck the rest

One of the rants that McGeneralissimo has gone one on at the COMPSTAT Meetings (Keep in mind that he is pushing this Department Legitimacy Program) is that there are too many people taking time on the weekends. The Gold Stars around him, at least the ones I have heard of all think he is an idiot for this and just about everything else he says but this it the topper. Still they stay in their seats and all that crap he spews flows out and down to the cops on the street and destroys morale and productivity.

Worked in 017 many years ago and it was a great place to work then. It had great cops and the widest variety of people anywhere. You could hear and speak a dozen languages there including Kliegon.

No matter what overtime program McCarthy puts in it does not cover up the fact that we are about 2,000 pension contributing members of this department down and this goof is putting us into a crash drive. The commander of 008 has his balls on the end of his star. If he cared about the troops he would call Deputy Johnson or McNutsack and explain the situation and ask for some help in that day so guys could go to the outing. It is not like the whole district goes to the golf outing it is usually 80 golfers. Some of those holders could be on furlo or rdo so the amount of people needed would be less than 80. It shows a complete lack of leadership on his part.

Ariel Investments President To Succeed Maggie Daley

Ariel Investments President Mellody Hobson on Tuesday was named the new chairman of After School Matters, the charity co-founded by the late Chicago First Lady Maggie Daley and former Chicago Cultural Affairs Commissioner Lois Weisberg.

The group has been without a chairman since Daley's death from cancer in November. Also on Tuesday, Daley's daughter, Nora Daley Conroy, joined the group's board of directors and her son, Patrick Daley, joined its advisory board.

These are the last in a string of signals that former Mayor Richard M. Daley and his children intend to treat After School Matters as Maggie Daley's legacy.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/breaking/chi-mellody-hobson-named-to-head-after-school-matters-20120710,0,1112222.story

To me, this signals that the Daley family will plunder this charity's bank account as if it is their own. The best thing for the taxpayers would be to have this thing shut down IMMEDIATELY and put an end to the Daley Crime Family's corrupt stranglehold on governmental money!!!!!!

The failure of leadership here is obvious to any real leader. I know a sergeant who it way up there on the Lt list, he is certain to be in the next class of Lt's. He held real rank in the military and would make a superb lieutenant. However, he is retiring early because he knows a bad situation when he sees it. Imagine that, a sergeant in his early 50's preparing to resign and retire rather than take a certain promotion to lieutenant of police. That is how fucked up this police department has become.

So if everybody gets the day off, who works?

Sorry, you just can't come and go as you please. As a very good boss once told me - and I didn't like it, but it's true - the Dept told you when you could earn the time, it'll tell you when you can take it.

about 320 people work in 008.... about 75 people attend the golf outing. 20 or so are from other districts or retired. some will be on furlough and some will be rdo.. so they are asking for about 35 people to be off that day. divide that by three watches and its about 12 per watch. you cant borrow two guys from each district in area one to cover it????? Yeah, I think each district can come up with 2 people willing to help out. but then again, its guys like you and your long thought out responses who run this department... pud.

I am so fucking glad I decided to get into security contracting in the Middle East rather than come on the job with CPD. I don't know how you guys stomach working for the people you do. The only reason I'm ever coming back to Chicago is to get all the stuff I've got in storage. I should have left years ago, even when I thought I couldn't afford to.

OT: By the way, I was with Dyncorp once, what company are you with?

Get your shit straight! Sgts are denied every bit as much! If you don't believe me, then ask my children how much time they've spent with their dad this damn summer! I seriously HATE this city and can't wait to get the hell out! I'm mad at your lack of ability to see the truth that 008 sgts are being denied as much as POs but I still respect the hell out of each and everyone of you. You all are in such a ridiculous situation it's no wonder morale is gone. Keep your heads on straight and remember the ultimate goal: ... go home safe to that family every night and have each others' backs. Knowing that you guys look out for each other in spite of management and morale makes it a little easier for us to let you leave everyday.

agreed.....and the time not spent with family or children can never be recovered, it's gone....a sobering reality

Remember LT Tony Ceja got hit with rule 14 and only took 30 days so remember that if any of you get hit with that! He along with his sidekick SGT Yosh. Two bosses held to a higher standard caught lying and took 30 days.

This job is what you make it! Those were the first words I heard my FTO utter back in 1980. Those words ring as true today as they did yesterday. If you want to improve morale, start by looking within yourself. Sure, you can complain about the bosses. You can say the bosses of yesteryear were better than those of today. You know what, a boss is a boss. Whether it was yesterday or today. You cannot control the boss, You cannot control the mayor, You cannot control the directives of the superintendent. You can and should control everything within your pervue. You are Chief of Police on your Beat. Take pride in your appearance. Always manintain a professional and military bearing. Treat all citizens fairly. Have respect for the bosses rank, even if you do not respect the individual that holds it. Keep yourself free from anxiety and you will remain healthy. Develop a working knowledge of the G.O.'s & S.O.'s. Discuss the orders frequently with the SGT's & Lt's they will do their best to avoid you. Use experience, common sense, and your knowledge of the GO's & SO's in rendering your decisions. Others will begin to notice that you seem to be happier than everyone else. Let them know you are preparing yourself to make difference. As your self confidence improves, others will follow and morale will improve on your watch. Whatever you do, stay safe and at the end of your tour go home safe to your family. Never forget, this job is what you make it!

To me, this signals that the Daley family will plunder this charity's bank account as if it is their own. The best thing for the taxpayers would be to have this thing shut down IMMEDIATELY and put an end to the Daley Crime Family's corrupt stranglehold on governmental money!!!!!!

7/10/2012 05:28:00 PM

I didn't realize that Patrick Daley had anything to do with children or schools or children's charities in the past. I don't understand how the city of chicago has given 56 million to a charity that was headed by the mayors wife? It is not a city service but a private charity. How is it justified to pay tax payer money to a private charity? I am really stumped on that one. I guess if the rest of the family is getting involved when they were never involved before must mean there is more city money to come their way. More of our money, which I would prefer to give back to myself as a charity donation.

I have a thought and maybe a lawyer can determine if it has a prayer.... we pay taxes to include police coverage to a budgeted level if that level is not met could a class action suit be filed to recoup the amount of taxes that was supposed to pay for X number of officers?

7/10/2012 09:40:00 PM

You don't need a lawyer, you need reading glasses. Property taxes do not pay for CPD police. Only Fire, CPS and Streets and Sans. So no, you can't sue.

What day is the outing? I'll "volunteer" to cover your shift for free if I'm RDO. God Bless Kup! If they won't let me volunteer, I'll use your nametag!

At last weeks comp stat meeting the bosses were bitched at for giving too much time due. Wysinger said "they wanted 4 and 2's so they will get their 2 days off and that's it" So THIS is why your time due is getting denied.
