Nineteen people were shot, two fatally, across the city Friday night and Saturday morning.
The weekend's violence started with an attack in the 500 block of South Kilpatrick Avenue in the West Garfield Park neighborhood about 6:20 p.m. Two people were shot in the block. One person was taken to John H. Stroger Jr., Hospital of Cook County and the other, 22, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where the person was pronounced dead.[...]
The other homicide happened about 12:15 a.m. in the 11500 block of South Wentworth Avenue in the West Pullman neighborhood. Two men were shot and one didn't survive. Police said an 18-year-old was found dead with a gun in his hand and a second man, 25, was dropped off at Roseland Hospital with gunshot wounds to the leg.[...]

McCarthy has to go soon! The troops have no faith in him! His constant push to commanders to limit time due has effected the troops. These men and women working 24/7 are under a very different type of stress. Just driving the city streets 24/7 is stressful enough. Then when that man with a gun call or person shot comes in, the mind and body elevate so fast that its stressful on the body and eventually causes burnout. When McCarthy came here he sold his soul to the devil just to get this job to feed his EGO. If this trend continues much longer the troops will have have little to nothing left in the tank. McCarthy must go soon!!!
Luckily most of the shooters' aim is bad or the number of murders would be way up. Not sure how many weeks in a row bad aim as kept the numbers down.
It's okay because all other crime is down....just listen to the zones- they are almost always in a RAP! Tonight I heard of domestic disturbance calls which were over 40 minutes old and multiple battery in progress calls with even more time on those. Think those people got a report? So now domestics and batteries are down. There were numerous calls of shots fired that had been pending for 30-45 minutes.....we aren't even going to shots fired calls anymore because we can't-not enough cops and too many shootings and babysitting gangbangers. My point is, crime is only down because there are many victims who never get a report! When will someone call this Supt. on his BS? Murders are up because there will always be a report.....other crime is up as well!

Who's next? Turns out the bike unit's days are numbered, at least half are slated for transfer orders to 003, 004, 005, 006, 007, and for those who cry loudest -009 (if you're clouted). They plan on sending them to be used on bikes at the respective district Commanders discretion but Superintendent made it clear those officers sent to districts won't last past October on bikes.

Emailing new candidates for the power test? How many qualified candidates are we loosing because of emailing issues? Where is the professionalism?

To the asshat that reminded us it's 2012- no shit thanks for the update. The point is that the city did a half ass job of notifying people for the test- myself included. My notice was in my spam folder. However I noticed that certain groups of people (figure that one out) got regular paper notices in the mail 3-4 weeks prior. When I went there we only about 40 people that showed and that was the trend for all of the groups called for this test. I had 6 days to get ready for it. All of the people I talked to while I was there said the same thing I did- that they had ZERO notice and tons of people missed it all together. Rumor is that this list which is just under 7,000 will be exhausted by September. YEAH BECAUSE MOST OF US DID NOT KNOW WE HAD TO BE THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE! And please- don't tell me I'm better off without it, I've heard it all and still want this.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what the people in my situation can do? I appealed it already to HR and got a generic response. I don't know what else to do.

Consider this a gift from heaven, it won't get any better once you get hired here. Go apply to a real police or law enforcement agency. Illinois State Police, US Marshall Service, Secret Service, FBI, DEA, you get the idea? Also Customs Service.
Border Patrol is getting into firefights almost every day. I know one PO whose son got on the Border Patrol and resigned in less than a year. Can't recommend Border Patrol.
There are some good suburban departments around. Wilmette, Winnetka, keep looking.
What you experienced during hiring is normal here now, it is a disorganized mess and is getting worse. But if you can't be dissuaded keep at it, you can have my spot, I am retiring in November. I wanted this job just as badly in 1985. It was top notch at that time by comparison with now.

You can call personnel and ask what number they're on. But you'd probably be better off checking your spam folder, as I've posted before, that's where mine was. They're almost done with this list so good luck. If you missed it because it's been sitting in your spam folder, all I can tell you is you're not the only one. HR doesn't care, they'll tell you tough luck, try again next written test.

In a time when the governor and the mayor are trying to REDUCE the pensions, do you really think they are going to go to bat for INCREASING your payout?
Shut up, be patient, wait for better economic times, then ask your legislators to introduce it. Now is NOT the time. Even bringing it up at this point in time makes you look like you've had your fiscal head under a rock, or you've lived in a cave the last four years. Be realistic. No one is going to champion this cause for at least another year or two.
Why don't we make sure everyone who applies for this job get handed a government computer (and a link card) so they make sure they can get the call up.

To those that are on the hiring list, here are a few tips:
Start working out. Go to Illinois Training and Standards Board website and look up P.O.W.E.R Test. Train for it.
Written psych: keep all your answers consistent. Numerous questions are the same just reworded.
Polygraph: don't lie. If you smoked a little weed 5 years ago, admit it. Many r failing this psych test.
Good luck, we need the bodies.

Born after 1955 do get a COLA, only 1.5% instead of 3%, simple interest, not compound of course.
Last year FOP was in Springfield trying to get the after 1955 passed. No pension enhancements will pass that are not paid for somehow. Expect some type of payment/giveback by active in exchange for the after 1955. It won't get passed otherwise.
Get used to lots of shit becoming two tier.

Me too, PIN doesn't work.
Money is there, card works for purchases, no cash because no PIN that works.
As long as Old Timers generate revenue,the city will walk all over us.
Academy staff told to be in on time tomorrow, Personnel to address staff, personnel will assign follow-ups for members to visit applicants. Staff will be riding out all week to make sure applicants have been notified.
The numbers are rounding out to about 50 people shot for the weekend. 40 plus by 9 am Sunday and then some decent mid afternoon shootings. 50 at least by midnight Sunday into Monday. We haven't seen these numbers since, oh, a few weeks ago.

OT - time to pass a cost of living increase for officers born after 1955. The two-tier retirement benefits are unfair. All retired Officers deserve cost of living increases. They are on a fixed income.

In a time when the governor and the mayor are trying to REDUCE the pensions, do you really think they are going to go to bat for INCREASING your payout?
Shut up, be patient, wait for better economic times, then ask your legislators to introduce it. Now is NOT the time. Even bringing it up at this point in time makes you look like you've had your fiscal head under a rock, or you've lived in a cave the last four years. Be realistic. No one is going to champion this cause for at least another year or two.

That means that they need 10,000 applicants to hire 500 police.

Your math is off.
1. 10,000 – 60%= 4,000 candidates (after 60 percent fail the lie test)
2. 4,000 – 35% = 2,600 candidates (after 35% fail the fitness test)
Do not buy any big ticket items by yourself. You are going to get ripped off.
They are notifing people by email and most of them are going to their SPAM email so NO ONE is getting notified.

The people who think Rahm Emanuel wants to run for President are not morons. They are right.
It doesn't mean they think he will win, or that he COULD win. It means they think his New York Harbor sized ego lets HIM think he could win.
While a few urban areas might give him a decent showing, Nebraska and Utah and New Mexico and West Virginia will not vote for the self-proclaimed 'spin-doctor'. He's only popular in his own mind. Even Ari's influence can't reach that far.
But that doesn't mean Rahm doesn't want it. Badly.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what the people in my situation can do? I appealed it already to HR and got a generic response. I don't know what else to do.

Class action lawsuit. Set up a separate email account and post it here. Try and locate all the people who weren't notified in a proper fashion, via SCC, FOIA requests and maybe a good old fashioned grassroots campaign.
People with less basis than this have won lawsuits against the City, so why not you?
And, in the meantime, haven't you heard all those commercials the CIA has been airing, trying to find candidates to hire? I can't tell you how I wish I'd talked to that nice man in the suit who invited me to interview with them, back when I was a college junior. Try it; you might find yourself in an interesting job, instead of writing parkers on the boulevards.

I'm sure you're brilliant, but you might do better if you guessed the 50's. I'm directly affected by it, but I'm not stupid enough to think ANY politician is going to risk their career by backing a raise in my pension right now.
