Look! Drew Peterson

This thing finally went to the jury:
  • After 8 1/2 hours of deliberations, jurors deciding the fate of Drew Peterson have ended their deliberations for the day.

The judge told the jurors they would not be sequestered during deliberations, meaning the jurors can go home for the night.

They will return Thursday to the Will County Courthouse to continue their second day of deliberations.

Now would be the perfect time for Stacy to turn up, so if she's reading, come on out.

Bets are still being taken as to the verdict. Anything to distract the masses.

UPDATE: Guilty? Didn't see that one coming. Looks like his defense team should have pushed the mistrial angle harder. Appeals forthcoming we're sure.

This would be laughable if it wasn't t so serious. The prosecution hasn t proved anything. That a murder occurred, that Peterson was in the house at the time of death, what was the weapon? All based on hearsay. If Peterson is found guilty it is the press that got him there. I was a Det.. For 38 years and thought this whole case was a sham, I thought you would need evidence to prosecute a case?

The politicians at the Will County State's Attorney got tired of Peterson flipping them off so they got a law passed through the legislature making hearsay evidence admissable, contrary to Constitutional Law (Sixth Amendment). Then they make a law retroactive, again Unconstitutional. They even jokingly referred to it as the "Drew Peterson Law" before it passed. If that isn't selective prosecution, I don't know what is.This case, even after 2 requests for mistrials that IMHO, were improperly handled by the Bench, have left this case open to overturning any guilty conviction in the Appellate Court, and definitely in the SCOTUS.

Do I think he's a dirtbag? Doesn't matter. Does presenting hearsay evidence brought out by people years afterwards with no prior mention to Police warrant a guilty conviction? NO! I do not subscribe to the ends justify the means. Gather up evidence that can convict and then arrest and indict. Hearsay evidence is only admissabl;e in the Grand Jury and that is where you take your weak cases. That is the reason that so many cases by indictment are lost. If you truly have a strong case, you bring it before the Judge in the Probable Cause Hearing and get an Information. That is where most convictions, percentage wise, will be had....

Despite him being a cocky ass, the law is the law and the state has proven nothing. If he does get locked up it is an injustice to our constitution and an injustice to us all as Americans. If he did it, prove it.

Don't know if he did it or not. However.....No way in hell the jury should be even thinking of a guilty. And the Hearsay Law is a crock!

How many books will be written by jurors in the Drew Peterson trial?

If I was there, I'd sure try to be the first author to tell MY story. Even a crappy book would probably make you a million bucks the way Peterson had managed to grab the nations attention.

Just saying.

However.... Even though I have personal doubts about his innocence, are laws supposed to be passed for the sole prosecution of ONE person?

Hey SCC,

Just curious. Today I noticed one of your semi-uniformed officers escorting Drew Petersons defense team both in and out of the Will County Courthouse. I didn't know you guys could do that but maybe your policy changed. He was really flashing his CPD credentials to the Lt. on duty in the courthouse hallway.

You can see him in the background on the video with the defense team after the verdict. He's the short, heavy, bald guy wearing the blue shirt, tie, tac pants and police vest with "Police" on the back.

----------------------------------

The whole Savio case was predicated upon her disappearance so it would be more than a little ironic if she popped up somewhere.

Alive that is, not suddenly floating to the surface of some inland waterway.

This case will probably be overturned at the lower appellate level, but if not, it most certainly will be when it reaches the Supreme Court.

I have a feeling the justices in D.C. would take a dim view of a state legislature passing a law that allows hearsay as evidence, especially a law that was drafted primarily to nail just one person.

It isn't hard to kill someone and make it look exactly like Savio drowned.

Grab by ankles...yank under water with enough force to drive water up nose and into mouth...disorientation and unconsciousness is darn near instantaneous. George Joseph Smith made a profitable living out of this sort of murder until March 1915. Took the Scotland Yard a bit to solve it..but they did it almost 100 years ago.

Makes one wonder if Drew owns a copy of the Book "Bloody Business: An Anecdotal History of Scotland Yard."

personally I wish they would come up with a body for his last wife.. alive or dead... they should start checking all construction that was going on anywhere in IL at the time she suddenly vanished.. However to put this arrogant moron in jail on heresy is not exactly Justice..while I believe that respect for fellow officers should be given the officers who allowed Drew to sit in with his wife (Stacy) when they were questioning her should be fired.. who knows she might have broke down and told all at that point in which case she might still be around.. I believe Justice was done at least for those who have had to put up with Drew's scare tactics.. one thing I don't like about the jury system is they release names of those serving and THAT would be my idea of peoples lives being put on the line when rendering a verdict in cases like this NUT JOB should he ever get out..

The constitutional principle some of you seem to be searching for is called "ex post facto" which means that the government cannot create a law that makes an act a crime that was not a crime at the time the act took place.

This hearsay law did not create a new criminal act. The law only changed court procedure, so it is not retroactive because the case went to trial after the law was passed. Ex post facto does not apply. This law has been reviewed by the IL Supreme Court already so don't expect a successful appeal on that issue.

Because the Cook County State's Attorney's Office wants dead bang cases before approval, cops seem to forget that the rest of the country still takes hard cases to trial, including cases where hearsay evidence is critical.

The US Supreme Court would probably uphold Stacy's out of court statements on another basis, forfeiture by wrong-doing -- that, basically, if a witness is unavailable to testify because of your wrong-doing, you don't have the right to object to their statements coming in. As Stacy was going around telling everyone that she was leaving Peterson and telling everyone that he killed Kathleen, I think a very strong case can be made that her "disappearance" was caused by Drew to prevent her from testifying against him in a future prosecution. Again, that would mean that any statement she made would be admissible.

While the statements are very important to this case, there was other evidence that tended to coraborate the statements -- like the way Drew sat in on her interview -- wildly inappropriate -- and how each of them behaved in the interview. If he didn't have any involvement, why insist upon being in the interview and why did she turn to him for answers to simple questions? The investigator testified that he believed she was coached.

I grant you that there is a lot that isn't known so evidence wasn't presented, but again, in other jurisdictions cases go forward like that successfully. Don't let CCSAO's cowardly policies make you think that you need as much evidence as they require in order to successfully prosecute a case. It just requires more work to put it on.

I've been gone from CPD for 2 years now and it took me more than a year to break my addiction to Second City Cop. (I'm trying to have a calmer life now. Need to keep the blood pressure down.) I just thought I'd drop in to see the reaction to this verdict.
