Off-Duty Shot

  • An off-duty Chicago Police officer who was shot three times early Monday during an attempted robbery on the Southwest Side is now convalescing at an area hospital with his family by his side.

The 34-year-old officer was shot twice in the chest and also suffered a broken wrist after a bullet struck him in the arm during an exchange of gunfire with the would-be robber, police said.

Despite getting shot in the chest, the bullets missed his vital organs and the officer is “doing well,” resting with his wife and family, police department spokeswoman Melissa Stratton said in an email.

Police say the ten-year veteran was getting out of his vehicle when a man with a handgun walked up and attempted to rob him just after midnight, near West 63rd Street and South Nashville Avenue.

The officer fired his gun at the robber and told investigators that he believes he shot the man, though no one was in custody Monday morning and police cannot confirm the robber was shot.
Lot of coppers live around there.  Report says a silver car with three occupants.

Best wishes to the wounded officer and hopefully, the one offender is slowly bleeding out in his mother's basement.

To you, brave Officer, first and foremost, I thank God you survived this attempt on your life. You are one tough one to have done so. It's clear from your injuries that the offender had zero intentions of letting you live. My prayers are for you and your family, that you heal as quickly and free of pain as possible. And that your loved ones process through this scary event in your life and theirs with as few nightmares as possible. I hope and pray to God that the guilty involved suffer a thousand fold and I ditto SCC's hope that it occurs especially slowly and painfully for the person who shot you- and that he gets a long hard look at the fiery Gates of Hell first.

To all our Officers out there, please be safe! Godspeed as you chase this particular bad guy. Go get him!

Thats one of the results of having that beat nearly the size of the entire 007th District. Bt 812 is Harlem to Central 59th to 65th. One beat car and maybe an occasional rapid, if they're not pulled off to go east. Off duty guys and girls are forced to be the only police out there, and this is the result. Maybe they'll raise our taxes some more and send out more on duty cops to the neighborhood? NA! Just raise the taxes.

First I want to wish the officer a speedy and full recovery and I am glad his child was not injured. I also want to commend the officer for reacting in such a manner that afforded him the opportunity to defend himself and his child. Yes, this is supposed to be a "Safe" area, but as we are all aware, there are no more safe areas in this city and state. I am elated that this officer chose to carry his firearm with him because as we all know most of our off duty brothers and sisters do not.
Remember to always carry a firearm with you, because you NEVER KNOW!!

Anonymous 008: #2 "City" in Illinois said...

I reside in the city north of North Ave. Only yesterday afternoon, we visited a fellow CPD retiree living in the Clearing neighborhood in 008. I noticed the well-kept homes, aware that because of the City of Chicago's mandatory residency rule for active CPD, CFD and other city workers, the west end of the 8th District seemingly remained a relatively safe and decent neighborhood to raise a family. On the way back home, we even stopped at a friendly tavern for a bowl of their locally famous chili at Archer and Nashville. I actually liked the neighborhood.

I would like to make three points:

(1) Unto itself with a population of nearly 250,000 residents, the 8th police district would be the second most populous "city" (not just one police district) in the entire State of Illinois. For purposes of violent crime, the east end of 008 (Chicago Lawn and Marquette Park neighborhoods) could accurately be described as crime-infested "Englewood West", draining police resources to the detriment of those that reside west of Cicero Ave. and Midway Airport. In the interests of police service and public safety, the current 8th District should obviously be served by at least two separate police stations.

(2) The Chicago Police Department is the only major (even minor) police department in the entire nation that compels its officers to reside within the city limits. Non-compliance = mandatory separation from the CPD. WHY?

(3) It would be impossible for local politicians to rationally defend the fact that Illinois is the only state in the nation which refuses to legalize concealed carry by decent, law-abiding citizens. Apparently Quinn, Emanuel, Madigan, Preckwinkle and local legislative bodies are certain that the other 49 states are delusional. Predictably, none of these scoundrels would dare to address this topic. WHY?

Please forgive me since the rational common sense of my three points is obviously a flagrant violation of the tenets of "THE Chicago Way". Mea culpa.

Thank God that the off-duty officer who was shot at 63rd and Nashville has an excellent prognosis for full recovery. May the shooter be found bled out in a concealed nearby rat hole.

That neighborhood is one of the last bastions of hope in this fallen city; in it live many of the everyday heroes forced by residency requirements to remain within the Chicago confines. I'd venture to guess that on every block lives at least one firefighter or police officer, and on many blocks several.

The filth of this world knows no limits as to where it will traipse. True that those few decent people living in dilapidated, crime ridden areas don't "deserve" to be faced with armed robbers either: however, those neighborhoods - through their negligence, passivity, "don't snitch" mentality, single parent syndrome, abuse of social services, and attitude that education is nothing more than a requirement until you're 16 years old, (also a babysitter, two free meals, and teachers as scapegoats for the failings or absenteeism of parents) - have in many ways asked for the situation they find themselves in and blame everything else for, usually race. Garfield Ridge and Clearing have considerably fewer examples of this. That is why decent people pay twice what they would in nearby suburbs for homes half the size, so that they can keep the jobs with communist-residency requirements.

This event sickens me. Thank God the officer survived, and prayers for him and his family.

Thankfully the officer, though off-duty, was carrying a weapon. I live in Garfield Ridge, I am a police officer, and I can't preach enough the importance of carrying a weapon to defend yourself - even in what we tend to think of as our "safe neighborhood". I am not a "gun nut", yet I believe strongly that every person should be afforded the same opportunity. Please support Concealed Carry in IL so that every law abiding citizen stands a chance.

Rest easy and recover quickly and fully officer, our prayers are with you.

Will we city workers that populate that end of 008 maybe NOW see some officers? How about McPuppet direct some of the manpower the NON-TAXPAYERS get over to where people actually pay for, deserve and respect the police?

Rumor is one in custody at this time - when his gang affiliation is determined, will the west end of 008 be soaked in police to OBLITERATE his henchmen?

This is more affirmation to me and A LOT of coppers I know to not do shit in the ghettos we work in past answer out calls. When MY family and MY neighborhood is protected as well as where the savages live I'll think about doing something proactive for them. Until then, you'll get the minimum from me.

Chicago has the police force they wanted. I dont want the gloves to come off either.. Im quite comfortable doing my job the right way and not having to worry about anything. sorry, if you want change like what your asking for thats long gone... and its better for the community and the police department not to mention the officers themselves. It is more important than ever with deindustrialization and the destruction of the middle class.

Like I've seen with expensive "artisan," "niche" food stores where simple small supermarkets used to be, the continued presence of well-paid city workers in general creates a continuing purchased simulacrum of stability and well-being.

It is like substituting a cheap, stupid "Old Factory District!" banner on a phony lamp post for, say, an actual Admiral or Motorola or US Steel or Western Electric with 20,000 real jobs behind the gate.

This is why Rahm/McCarthy/media/yups affect to love the police for public consumption/keeping their own front yard picked up while uncontrollably working at cross-purposes as far as "social engineering," acting as agents of chaos and dissolution.

...so let's bust the remaining unions and de-police/privatize (Racine County WI corrections going increasingly civilian, just one item today) and you will REALLY see it hit the fan.

Back before the alleged "Welcome City" -- back when everyone seemed to be doing much better -- it used to be unremarkable that people lived where they worked, when there was consensus instead of endless, vastly expensive "multicultural" conflict.

Police keep putting the plug into the bottom of the boat and motherf__ers keep pulling it back out.

Sink or swim. Pick one, please. The troops are getting real tired of bailing.

Won't happen. Hopping up and down on one leg needing to go but not being allowed to is the desired condition.

The city you see is the city they want.

Manpower will never be deployed into the neighborhood and all we will get is CPD brass photo ops for the news. The neighborhoods where we live is forgotten. 016 borrows police from other districts every night and is nearly left for dead.

It seems 20 years ago the media always gave the basics. Now we don't even get the race of the offenders!

Who gives a fuck! is the race that important to you, as opposed to a COMPLETE description, you racist asshole. One of ours got shot, off duty, geez, it's more important things to worry about fucknut!....Get well Officer!

Take your time healing officer, and God bless you and your family. They got the best gift ever in your survival.

12/10/2012 02:58:00 PM

Yeah right. Gmac said he would "obliterate" the MLD's and then the Spanish Cobra's, but they still operate as though nothing happened. What a dumb comment to make when most people know that task would be impossible. How about we protect our own by placing police officers in our neighborhoods. Oh yeah, that's right, it's all about murders so the good people get no service, only the shit neighborhoods.

Concealed carry will never be allowed in Illinois because so many politicians rely on the ghetto vote. If armed citizens protect themselves and kill their assailants on a regular basis, the number of ghetto rats voting for democrats will plummet. First there would be alot of dead fucks, then the rest being the cowards that they are would have to get jobs so they don't get shot doing crimes. After working for about a week they would realize how fucked up the democrats are making it for working people. How so much of their pay goes to support the pieces of shit that he once was. Irony. I think it's time for the salty old timers to stop being selfish about their upside-down mortgages and LIFT THE FUCKEN RESIDENCY. We could very well be burying one of our own, but as long as you can hang on until the market bounces back so you can turn a penny, I guess all is well. Wake up, nowhere is safe, and it's not us, but our wives and children being held captive and in harms way. Get your priorities straight and lets organize for a change!

Are you F&%KING Soft???

How do you blame the "Salty Old Timers" for the residency requirement? It never ceases to amaze me how oblivious and ignorant you Gen x'ers and Y-me's are.

If you had even the most rudimentary knowledge of this department and city you would know we "Old Timers" have fought against the residency requirement for decades. Yourselves and the current young turks in charge at the FOP have not done anything regarding residency.

Furthermore, we are not the ones with upside-down mortgages you idiot. We bought our homes long before your generation showed up willing to spend yourselves into the poor house. Your short sighted, I must have it all now, live large on credit, spend today and pay for years mentality is what enabled the housing market to skyrocket. You live paycheck to paycheck, spend overtime you haven't even earned yet and then think nothing of walking away from your debts.

We could sell our houses for half what you were buying them for 7 years ago and still make 100% profit. Face the facts - Rahm is going to screw us all and you are going to make huge concessions in the next contract. Be smart and demand that the FOP at least get residency lifted contractually in return. At the very least don't punk out and left the FOP con you into accepting some BS contract. If it ain't a fair deal go to arbitration. There's no sure things in life but at least out up a fight.

If no one complains about police service this is the type of crime that will become common place in the 008 DIST.

Sorry to be devil's advocate but they are not going to put more police on the west end of 008. 811 and 812 are going to turn to shit. It's just a matter of when not if. Michigan Ave is also lost. The tourism will slowly fade away and the hit to the city's budget will be enormous.

Go get him!

And exactly how does walking help ? What facts are you looking at ? The neighborhood is going to shit. Maybe not in your make believe world , but in real life it is.

If an off duty officer shot while with his child means the neighborhood is not going to shit then you need help. What about all of the home invasions / burglaries ? Even ones to PO's houses ? Guess they should of gone on a walk.

Get residency lifted, just like McNumbnut's NYPD, only it costs us everything else. Pension, medical, disciplinary rights and so on will go to hell. You can move out, but to where. Sell you home, for what, peanuts. Plenty of buyer at cheap prices, all "New Americans" thanks to Rahm, Quinn and BHO.

Chicago has the police force they wanted. I dont want the gloves to come off either.. Im quite comfortable doing my job the right way and not having to worry about anything. sorry, if you want change like what your asking for thats long gone... and its better for the community and the police department not to mention the officers themselves. No matter WHAT do your job right and dont "take the gloves" off for anything. Even if a copper is shot let the detectives do their job. We have great detectives doing these investigations.. they will get to the bottom of it in time.. no need for over zealous coppers to go rouge and "take the gloves off" to screw stuff up.

Hey Liberal Why do you think were in this mess. I did everything right on this job. but how dare you talk about this when a copper's been shot. Kiss the bad guy's ass like all the politicians do. How much will your house be worth in Jefferson Park, Clearing, Garfield Ridge and Mount Greenwood? Think your pension is in trouble now, you won't even have a salary. No tax base. The residents of Garfield Ridge will help you find these guys, if you would just tell us:
1) WTF they look like! White? Black? Hispanic? Asian? Pilgrim?
2) WTF car were they driving? 2 door? 4 door? Panzer?
3) How old? teens? 20's? 30's? AARP members?

We are more than willing to help you, this is where we live and raise our families and where many of us work. But most of these posts seem to be more about whining about a residency requirement that has been around longer than the posters have been alive and running down my neighborhood than actually catching these guys.

If you don't want to live in Chicago, fine. QUIT. It's a job not slavery, you can quit anytime you want to. You knew the requirements when you went after the job and now you are shocked that you have to live in the city that pays you?

And then you run down Garfield Ridge? It may not be Lincoln Park but we have a pretty decent community, probably because you don't live here.

As a retired Chicago gang crimes detective in Area 1, the west side of 008 was getting worse and worse when I retired and moved away and that was almost ten years ago. I'm sure it's even worse now.
When I was working, as another poster said in this thread, lots of hispanic gangs and trouble from Summit were moving into the west end of 008. I'm sorry to say, but the west side of 008, along with the City as a whole, is going to hell quickly.

That used to be my old "stomping ground".

When I was a young buck.

Billy Joel did a song:

But it WAS a MUCH simpler time back then. I'm really starting to feel the years, now.

And I miss my departed best friend copper as much as ever. They say that time helps replace the pain of a loss with the memories of the time spent together.

Not for me, though.
I'm sorry for my old neighborhood.
I'm sorry for me.
I'm sorry for all of us.

RIP, Fast Eddie.

If you could see my kids, you'd be proud of what I was able to do.
