Ban Everything!

  • Chicago would ban the sale and distribution of high-caffeine energy drinks — not just to minors, but to consumers of all ages — under a surprise crackdown proposed Thursday by the City Council’s most powerful alderman.

Ald. Edward M. Burke (14th), chairman of the City Council’s Finance Committee, proposed the blanket ban, citing the popularity of drinks such as Red Bull, Monster, Full Throttle and 5 Hour Energy among teenagers and young adults and the dangers those drinks can pose to their health.
Because energy drinks have been implicated in ....what exactly?

His idea is ban every drink except the bottled water so they can get the additional revenue to bring our pension fund up to full funding. His next idea will be to tax any urine that was made from liquid purchased outside the city.

Dammit, SCC, only the aldermen know what's best for us, because we are too feebleminded to make decisions for ourselves!
We cannot decide for ourselves if we are consuming too much caffeine, foie gras, or sugary drinks!
We cannot determine for ourselves how fast or slow to drive when traveling down deserted boulevards or past school sidewalks teeming with children at dismissal.
We are incapable of determining when to shovel our walks, or attach a padlock to our gate, or if we're parked close enough to a curb, or not. (And we must be severely punished and fined if we do not comply.)
We are simply infants who require nannies. We MUST be dictated to! We are not allowed vending machine choices not approved by the dear leader, Rahm. We are prohibited from parking our leisure boats in view, on our own property. Our fences may be 'so high', but no higher. Our railings must be chest height, and no lower. Our lives must be ordered and restricted, because we are unable to think for act for ourselves.

Great idea!

I would get the mayor to demand that the city pension funds disinvest their investments from these high caffeine manufacturers. Then I would move on to demand sugary soft drink companies be dis-invested.

Chicago should only invest their pension money into companies that the Mayor is already invested in.

In other news...Sturm Ruger's stock was up another 4.5% today. That's like a 9~10% over 2 days.

I would like to see what actual scientific study he is using as a basis for his suggestion? It worked so well to stop people from buying water in the city.

Caffeinated energy drinks have led to an increase in caffeine related ER visits and hospitalizations.

I imagine the number has gone from two dozen a year to maybe three dozen a year.

"The sky is falling". "The end is nigh".

Burke is an asshole of biblical proportions.

Caffeine related ER visits are probably a fraction of one percent of alcohol related ER visits.

Never even tasted one of these. Whole huge piles in the stores, very expensive, I look at it as something unnecessary that idiots buy. Water with a few cents' worth of additives and $500 million in advertising.

..the same as Coke or other existing soft drinks with caffeine. I very occasionally have one. I do feel the caffeine. Usually just moderate coffee/tea in morning/evening.

These "energy drinks" contain not just caffeine but other herbs and amino acids meant to potentiate the caffeine; the synergy of all these ingredients seems to be unknown and unpredictable.

Kids drink 'way too much of the stuff, they mix it with alcohol, as well as other drugs. Probably another factor in foul-mouthed, aggressive public behavior.

Ban? Don't ask me.

the citizens in this city, county and state are denied, every election, of true choice in candidates, by the very political cabal to which you refer. this has been true for decades, if not for over a century.

the party primaries are rigged and, in the city, the so-called 'open' primaries are rigged.

period.

the election boards are stacked, the judiciary is bought and paid for, up to the state supremely full of shit court, and this is how the system works.

you either comply or are either bought, bullied or banished, your choice.

it's the political version of organized thuggery.

there is no joy here, in muddville, the American Way has, long ago, struck out.

I'd love to see a new nation with our Bill Of Rights but with a few mods.

All of the articles should be totally unambiguous!

Like "The People have a right to Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness, PERIOD. No ifs, ands, or buts!"

and

The 2nd Amendment would simply say, "The rights of the PEOPLE (and we mean PEOPLE not the states, militias, federal government, etc...) to keep and bear arms shall NEVER EVER be infringed.

For you see sadly our officials seem determined to twist the words to suit their needs. It's a "living document" to them. But one that lives in La La Land.

So, Eddie you have made yourself one of the richest men in America over the past 40 some years as a part time city employee.
You've made countless judges including one to the Illinois Supreme court who just happens to be your wife.
The city which you care so deeply about is a national disgrace at every level.
Crime, poverty, pension crisis, corruption, unemployment, health care, on and on.
And you have the audacity to propose such a truly remarkable useless fucking idea.
Way to serve the public, you should be so proud of your hard work.

Burke needs to get his fat ass precinct captain to partake of some energy drinks. It might help him with his hang me overs.

As soon as Arch criminal Burke gets a campaign contribution from those companies, his righteous indignation will dissolve...

When I hear stupid stiff like this, it makes me put down my coffee and take a mid-afternoon nap.

It really puts the world in a better light.

Burke should try it.

The only way you will take my white wine appetizers from me is prying them from my cold, dead, Chablis stained fingers.

"...Alderman need to be cut in half..."

I agree. You don't need to cut the number of aldermen, you just need to cut the sitting ones in half.

A bit messy, but worth it.
