State Farm Leaving Illinois?

  • Insurance chain State Farm is reportedly buying up substantial workspace in Texas, which may signal a coming exodus from the company's home state of Illinois.

State Farm is keeping the move quiet so as not to alarm employees. But the Dallas Morning News reports that it is a “major business relocation” already underway and that this is “one of the biggest stories in the Dallas-area real estate market and will ultimately involve thousands of workers.”

Texas-based real estate expert Bob Gibbons notes in a blog post that State Farm’s Dallas office space lease--about 2.5 million square feet of workspace in a few different places--is the Dallas area’s largest-ever office space lease by a single company.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported this week, too, that State Farm leased several hundred thousand more square feet of office space in Atlanta.

The company has 3.6 million square feet of office space in central Illinois and the spaces in Atlanta and Dallas easily total that amount.
But why State Farm?! Why???
  • At the end of 2010, in a special session, the Illinois Legislature passed a 67% hike in its corporate and personal income tax. The state is struggling with a structural deficit and its credit rating was recently lowered. The state now has the worst credit rating in the country. A number of businesses have floated the idea of leaving the state. A move by State Farm, however, would devastate the downstate economy.
Oh yeah. The tax thing and the complete financial mismanagement of the state. That'd do it.

State Farm has issued the standard boiler-plate denials. But the situation on the ground looks like they're keeping all their options open.

A good friend who works for State Farm told us months ago that they are in the process of revamping their entire corporate structure and their way of doing business.

They have told their agents that they intend to do away with the local neighborhood State Farm offices/agents. Instead, they will have regional claims offices where the phone banks will be manned by reps and everything will be done via an 800 number or by computer. The agents are going to be out of work unless some are brought over to oversee the regional offices. The days of visiting your State Farm office where you KNOW the people you are doing business with will soon be gone.

Apparently they decided that this is the perfect time for a corporate move to a more business-friendly State, as well.

Have two siblings who are corporate employees of State Farm. Something is definitely up. Bloomington will be a ghost town if they leave with people unable to sell their homes. Devastating. Thanks to inept and corrupt government officials who have been feeding like starved pigs at the public trough for years.

Just may be a Tsunami of jobs leaving Illinois soon and Rahm will be singing ♫ "Alll my ex's are in Texas.."

=====================================

When lawmakers raised taxes on Illinois residents and businesses, they also increased corporate income tax breaks for a select group of companies.

In 2011, businesses were eligible to claim about $161 million in tax credits — double from the prior year — mostly because of the increase to 5 percent from 3 percent in the state's personal income tax rate, which is a factor in determining the value of the incentives...[..}

***

In general, the value of a certificate (tax break) equals the number of jobs created and/or retained, multiplied by wages tied to those jobs and the state's personal income tax rate.

That means companies that didn't add one worker and kept wages at the 2010 rate received a 67 percent boost to their 2011 corporate income tax break. Just like individuals, corporations also registered a tax rate increase in 2011. Lawmakers set the new corporate income tax rate at 7 percent, up from 4.8 percent. The increases in breaks partially offset that hike.

The formula under which companies become eligible to receive tax breaks was aimed at encouraging job creation and increasing employee wages. Still, the 2011 data revealed that some companies made deals to allow job cuts and still qualify for incentives, a practice known as "normal attrition."

GOT THAT?!

Read it again.

The corporate tax rate was raised less than 50% and the individual tax rate was raised by 67%

Then the corporation got a tax credit based upon what the employees were paying.

Transfer of wealth baby as they pick and choose who the winners will be and promote propaganda about not messing with the free market.

It's all rigged.

Last Fortune 500 company escaping, kindly turn off the lights. Abbott Labs? United? Boeing? Caterpiller? Sears? Kraft Foods? Within a decade, Chicago will make Detroit look like Shangri La.

Fall of the Rahm-man Empire.

1 in 3 Illinois residents live in poverty

[...]

New statistics from a Chicago-based social research group reveal that one in three Illinois residents are living below or near the poverty line. According to the Social Impact Research Center, a program of Heartland Alliance for Human Needs & Human Rights, almost 1.8 million, or 15 percent, of Illinoisans live in poverty. Another 2.2 million Illinois residents, 17.9 percent, have incomes between 100 percent and 199 percent of the poverty level.

A family of four with an annual income of less than $23,021 is considered to be living below the poverty line. Of the state's 12.5 million residents, 4 million are considered low-income or are living in poverty. That rate has increased by 3.1 percent since 2007.

Amy Terpstra, associate director of the Social Impact Research Center, said these numbers are the worst on record

[...]

Twenty-eight of the state's 102 counties have poverty rates between 15 percent and 20 percent, and nine counties had poverty rates at more than 20 percent. According to the report, St. Clair County is one of 14 counties on the Warning List and is one of 39 counties that are either on the Poverty Watch or Poverty Warning Lists. The county had a 19.1 percent poverty rate in 2011. Madison County's poverty rate in 2011 was 7.9 percent and was not on either list.

[...]

"Time and time again, I've experienced large corporations and large manufacturing plants close up and leaving, so primarily the shift is a shift from manufacturing jobs which often do not require education past high school," she said. "We are seeing a move toward service jobs that don't command as high a value, wage-wise."

How's our social security and pensions going to be funded with a 33% poverty rate. Furthermore, if these workers do fund the boomers retirement what do they have to look forward to with no savings and living paycheck to paycheck. It's a matter of time. The whole ponzi scam economy is coming down.

Businesses leaving is the beginning of the end for any decent city or state. Dumbocrats just don't understand that businesses and the jobs they create are what ultimately grow and maintain a healthy economy. Instead they're focused on getting their hands on any money any way they can to fund more freebies/votes without any regard for the consequences. Once big companies leave they never come back. I hate to say it, but the best days of the greatest country on earth are behind us. How else can you explain a situation where the least qualified person to be president in the history of the United States gets elected? And 4 years later with 8% unemployment, record debt/deficits, inflation, lower incomes, the biggest entitlement ever created and the same goof easily gets re-elected.

You'd be foolish not to jump on it and make the move regardless. Off the top you would be getting a 5% raise due to NO state income tax in Texas, that's 5% more right away. Plus there is no corporate income tax in Texas.

Plus they execute cop killers there and reserve the ultimate punishment for capital murder etc.

Plus they have really good bar-b-q and great Tex-Mex food. Plus there is no Rahm, no Preckwinkel, no Madigan, no Cullerton, no Quinn, you getting the idea?

A retired co (like me) would see his pension check go farther. They like guns there. A pickup truck is Sunday go to meeting transportation. They have good baseball (Texas Rangers) and football (Dallas Cowboys) and college sports of all types.

Plus no Rahm, Madigan etc. Just a reminder.

State cuts are causing delays in Doctors getting licenses to practice in Illinois. New med. grads are leaving the state to do their internships elsewhere as a result.

Nice job Governor Quinn. Tell us again about the "Jay-OH-BEES" you're creating.

=================================

Hundreds of medical students may not be able to start their residency programs in Illinois this summer because of licensing delays.

The delays are the result of layoffs in the state office that processes the residents' license applications. Illinois officials and the physicians they license have disagreed for months over how to fund the office.

Financial woes forced the office to cut 18 staffers last month. Since then, the application processing time has increased from 16 days to six months.

We don't need those well paid doctors, support staff and related tax revenues. No. Let 'em go to one of the mayors community colleges to get a certificate in welding instead.

The Gov. bagging about a $67 million dollar bridge to no-where. ha. Seriously. It's gonna take $64 million dollars to put up a bridge on Irving Pk Rd out by Ohare and he estimates it will take 870 people to build it.

http://www.murphysboroamerican.com/article/20130219/NEWS/130219041

I wonder what the price of that bridge is per foot? 870 people to build it? Might as well say 900 people, 300 per shift. Now imagine the work area that they will be responsible for?

More bullshit numbers.

I resent the State Farm " he's a French model" commercial. Makes the Caucasian blond girl look as stupid as possible. This is a recurring theme in their ads. How about the dumb white guy who rear ends the very calm, intelligent black man, then sings, " I have blah blah insurance , so person come help." Then the dumbest looking hillbilly white lady appears , for some reason on a pay phone , and says, " theres 6 people in front of us Jimmy." Why do companies use this line of advertising?

She is suppose to be Jimmy's Mother, (intentionally capitalized out of respect) and she is on her house phone, not a payphone. The commercial demeans the Mother in several ways, and it worked, because you also demeaned her. BTW, you are an idiot.

Ummmm, what the fuck does insurance companies paying out claims have to do with Illinois having the worst business climate and Texas having one of the best??? Not to mention all the things previously mentioned like better weather, lower/no taxes, conservative values and MUCH less corruption than this shithole. Dumb fucks like you are all that's going to be left in this state if it keeps hemorrhaging businesses. Keep voting democrat asshole.

If you don't know the answer to that then you are the dumbfuck. Florida kicked State Farm out because they basically fucked every policy holder in Florida after a major storm there years ago. You might want to do some research asshole before opening that doughnut hole you call a mouth.
Then again that would require more than the third grade intelligence you seem to have, asshat.

atlas shrugged all the way.

Ayn Rand was right, and for those still in denial of that fact will have something to say, when the federal government passes legislation that puts a moritorium on corporate moves crossing state lines!

see you in colorado!

Some idiot this moron is. According to Ayn Rand you are responsible for your own mess so don't expect a fellow officer to bail your ass out. What a fucking idiot.

It's funny that you rag on him for not doing his research when you haven't done yours. A quick google search shows that State Farm still writes policies in Florida.

They threatened to pull out in 2009 because they found writing property policies there to be a losing proposition due to a high probability of storm damage, and legislators were reluctant to allow them to hike their rates.

Also, many other insurers have pulled out of Florida completely for just this reason, so it isn't just State Farm.

This isn't to defend them, I hate insurance companies as a rule. But for the love of god, you run around calling people names for not knowing their facts when you didn't lift a finger to inform yourself of the same?

Do your research next time, or keep your cock socket shut.

If State Farm leaves Illinois then every Illinoisan should cancel their policy. Screw those jagoffs. They're no different than a professional team that threatens to leave a city unless they get everything they want. Go ahead and leave jagoffs.

I have worked for State Farm for almost 35 years. Have read all the posts. Just put yourself in our place. We, like many employees at major companies await what is out of our control. I have lived in Illinois my whole life and understand what the company has to do if they do leave. Without divulging all that I do know, and that is not much, just remember those that have made the company what is. The people that drive now from Chicago to a suburb because all Chicago offices are closed (I lived/worked 5 - 10 minutes from a claim center), I pay more in gas/tolls, wear & tear on my car, stress from an hour or more commute, and more importantly my time sitting in traffic (especially during storms or accidents). Competition and taxes are part of what is causing the company to do what it needs to do. I am just happy that I am close to retirement age and probably will not have to cooperate in this next change. Not asking for sympathy, just a perspective from the "inside".

They've closed their Collinsville claims office relocated employees I think to Bloomington. Who can blame them for leaving IL. If IL doesn't do something it's going to just get worse and worse. It's very worrisome

Wow... As an agent and knowing something was in the works with State Farm... We feel the corporate influence every day... In out gut.. We know a "move" is on it's way to a new insurance method... But it't not new... Look how many 800 companies are out there... Underwriters read a scrip and no consideration is made for loyalty...

In moving to Texas... Remember guys... Property taxes are very high... That offsets the state taxes .... But for who?

Wow.... Don't you just love corporate decisions!!!!
