Violence Reduction Initiative Expanded

Running seven days a week now?

Up to 200 spots on the weekends, day and night shifts.

Our best guess is that this is costing around $1 million per week including officers, sergeants and lieutenants.

Any idea where Rahm is finding the money for this? Did that money tree finally sprout on the roof of City Hall?

Then there's the whole activity madate to work certain VRI hours. The department's always denied the existence of any quota or index, yet they spell out exactly what numbers you'll need to get on the VRI roster.

Many of you have been denied a day off, but you'll bend over backwards to work your RDO(s) for the same system that fucked you out of that family wedding or your kids' baseball game.

The city wants to limit you to working a maximum of 20 hours a week at your side job. And that's ONLY after you tell them where you'll be doing this side job. A side job that you'll be doing on YOUR OWN TIME. But they currently seem to have no problem with you working VRI on all of your days off. Not to mention any hours you may spend in court or on late jobs/arrests.

Wake up and see the hypocrisy, folks. While the money is good, and many absolutely need it for whatever reasons, you are little more than whores in uniform. You play right into the hands of the administration that has it's foot on your throat.

If Rahm has a million a week to spend on this, then he has enough loot to hire the officers needed to keep pace with attrition.

It sounds to me the naysayers bitch because they can't get it. It's called seniority and if you don't have it now you will one day. We all were new at the beginning so just relax and wait your turn like the rest of us. When you're in a senior position you'll understand.

Anyone in the HR business can tell you that it is better to hire a current employee on their days off ( even with time and half) then to hire more full time employees. It is far cheaper and when the need is over you are not stuck with a lot of permanent employees.

2/16/2013 09:33:00 AM

I just dont understand why people think that working your days off for the department makes you a whore and a sucker? And, why should you care how many people the city hires? If they are paying overtime to work your regular job then why not? Every company in America does this. It is cheaper to hire back to complete the work then to hire more full time employees. And, the company, any company, can limit what you do on your free time. Many do not, but that does not mean that they cannot as a condition/contract of your employment. They can limit the type of work you do and the number of hours you do it. Work through your union ( you are lucky to have one) and try to get the best deal possible. But, some of you complain so often and so loud abut everything, I think that you should get another job or you will explode.

Your safety, our safety depends on it. Stop letting the poiticians mis-spend (steal) the taxes they collect.

This 'screw everyone else' mentality is going to kill this Country. Stick together and make Rahm raise our staffing to a safe level.

And, dont forget, there are plans afoot to put a referendum on the ballot in the next statewide election to change the pension funds. I can tell you EXACTLY where he found the money for it SCC...the police budget. We know staffing for police has been cut by over 1000 officers. Add to that all the retirements that have taken place compared to the amount hired and we are probably down over 2000 bodies. Running VRI is saving the city hundreds because they do not pay all the extra benefits they would have to if they hired more officers. Also, the city can send those officers anywhere they want to as needed. Lets face it VRI is a brilliant idea for the City.

With their case load (upwards of 20-30 new ones a week) there's very little time for proper investigations. If the victim doesn't answer the call the first time around, the dicks suspend the case and move on to the next one. This is especially true of property crimes dicks, who are getting buried.

And, don't forget that the ET's are so short, that the wait time (if you're even lucky to get one assigned) for a residential burglary is over 24 hours!!

Blame that on the "money saving" consolidation of the areas.

If the city wants officers to work only 20 hours a week then maybe they should hire more officers.

And detectives not receiving overtime???

As long as VRI runs, there will be less new hires. With OT and VRI, Rahm doesn't have to add to the pension, pay extra medical and training costs, and can claim he has more than enough cops to get the job done. I work it so I agree it's a good deal to make extra cash. However, it does nothing to get us the manpower we actually need.

It is kinda of funny if a dick cannot figure out a way to make OT then may be they are not on the ball. I have never seen any supervisor ever say don't arrest and investigate a case!

Great point. If you are a working detective you should have no problem making arrests, getting overtime for them and the follow up court. On the other hand if you make detective go to a D unit and do nothing, you wont get overtime so quit bitching.
All of the working dets that I know dont want to work the VRI because they want some time off and have plenty of OT and Ct and arent looking for more work

Detectives handle real crimes. They don't waste time coming out to your petty crap. I can see by your spelling and grammar that you are never going to make detective so I understand your jealousy. Now go get your shine box.

I'm glad you said handle "real crime", cause Lord knows you don't solve "real crime" looking at your clearance rates. The laughing stock of major police departments.
