Crowd Demands Offender for Lynching

Tribune reporters Rachael Levy and Peter Nickeas cover this one in depth - we have no idea how they were allowed to do so. But then we realized it was the weekend and the editors were probably asleep at home:
  • The shooting of a 34-year-old man Friday night pulled a crowd of angry people onto a chilly South Side street where they loudly called for retribution against the man suspected of the killing.

About 100 residents of the apartment complex where Kevin Sanders was killed circled the front door of a building where the alleged shooter had holed up. The suspect, who police said had been shot in apparent retaliation, had gone there after the shooting. It's not clear what set off the violence.
So, one person dead, his body hauled off, because you know leaving it on scene causes the crowd to get bigger and no end to headaches. In this case though, someone also shot the shooter who took shelter in the building.
  • Nearby, a folded walker sat next to a car belonging to the wounded suspect's girlfriend; its front and back windshields had been smashed out by someone using the walker as a cudgel, police said.

Groups of bystanders tucked their hands in pockets and raised their hoodies to avoid the overnight chill, joining the group that had been yelling for the man inside.

As the residents stood on a sidewalk behind a fence separating them from the grass apron around the apartment, an ambulance backed up to the front door.
Now a CFD ambulance has to back up to the building so the wounded shooter can be moved with minimal problem, and the hootin' and hollerin' begin.
  • "I should have killed your (expletive) last year!" one man shouted from behind the fence, moments before police, who had formed a wall blocking a view of the suspect, hustled the wounded man out and into in an ambulance which quickly sped away with a police car leading and following. The suspect was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital.

At the brief sight of the man being led out, some raised their phones, in hopes of capturing a photograph of the scene. Others raised their voices, shouting violent threats against the suspect.

One woman shouted that the crowd should tip the ambulance: "Turn that (expletive) over!"
Unreported, probably because the reporters were kept far enough away, was that the ambulance was actually trapped for a time before police cleared an avenue for it to depart, and ended up escorting it to the hospital to make sure they made it. While we doubt the ambulance was in any danger of actually being tipped over, we're sure it would have suffered the fate of the innocent vehicle with all the windows busted out in short order without a heavy police presence.
  • Most expressed disapproval of Sanders' death and said he was loved throughout the neighborhood.

"Make your point, shoot him in the leg, shoot him in the arm, but to kill him?" asked Cassandra Smith, who lives across the street.

"Bring that (expletive) out," another person shouted while complaining that the man they believed responsible for killing Sanders was getting police protection.
Interesting. Ms. Smith accepts the idea of handing out a violation at gunpoint via and arm or leg shot, but not killing the original victim. Another unnamed person believes that police ought to turn the shooter over to the 'hood for justice. These people (or folks) weren't about to let the ambulance drive away with what they viewed as their prey. They wanted the shooter delivered into their hands for street justice - a lynching, plain and simple. Dr. King must be spinning in his grave.

We can name dozens of incidents of this nature - so can most of our readers. This isn't a rare occurrence, but the amount and detail of the coverage is.We're surprised it ever saw print.

Shocking statement in paragraph 5.
Oh... Staff writer (no name)

From tribune article:

Police are warning the public following two separate assaults that happened this morning in the same area on Northwest Side near the city’s border with Elmwood Park.

The attacks, one of which was a sexual assault, both occurred between 9:45 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. near the intersection of Belmont and Oak Park avenues, according to an alert from Area North detectives.

The offender ran up to a lone female walking and tried to force her to go into an unknown vehicle with him. Then, while implying he had a knife or a gun but not showing one, he sexually assaulted her, the alert said.

In the second incident, he hit another victim in the face with his fist and foot, the alert said. The age and gender of the second victim was not disclosed.

The man is described as being black, between the ages of 28 and 35, between 5-foot-10 to 6-foot, and about 170 pounds, the alert said. He has short black hair, a medium complexion, chipped or cropped teeth and silver earrings in both ears, the alert said.

He was last seen wearing all black clothing and black shoes and was seen driving a black vehicle, the alert said.

I was on scene for this event, it's just disgusting how the people were acting. They were even trying to blame the police for not being there to stop the shooting, Ha lol now they want us around... Too late, keep on killing and shooting each other and I'll gladly keep responding to clean up the mess and going to the hospital with the victims. I love eating outside of the district anyway. Tonight wasn't much better, all the calls for crowds gathering outside of the memorial... Laughable man, I hope I'm Rdo for the repass though!

This is the Savage Law Of The Jungle that very few people ever see, non-ghetto coppers included.

This is the type of animalistic behavior that the ignorant and uneducated Catered-To Constituency resort to at the drop of a hat, as witnessed by the Bacci Pizza fiasco. Only thing is...that little episode wasn't shit compared to the everyday violence these subhuman beasts are capable of conjuring up. Conflict resolution skills are virtually nonexistent and mob mentality rules the day.

There probably would've been a very different ending to such a scenario 25 years ago. Then again, cellular telephones weighed 12 pounds and were tethered to transmission humps in cars, and they sure as hell didn't have camera capabilities.

The ONLY thing that matters at the end of the day is that all CPD & CFD folks left the scene in the same shape in which they arrived.

Best course of action? Leave these lost causes to their own devices and try to keep them from spreading their cancer to where the decent folk live.

And before anyone gets all crazy about my opinion: I figured if Ald. Ameya Pawar (47th) can use wording such as the “right people” instead of “going after vulnerable populations or the homeless", I also can make generalizations based on my experiences and observations.

Guess what, sometimes thugs will form a "posse" to trick the police into thinking the "suspect" is evil when sometimes the "suspect" is the victim. I have seen it done but did not know the police were falling for it. A thug family was picking on a family of girls, they sprinkled their relatives around, their words, to trick the police into thinking there was an angry mob. They were the low lifes and thieves.

Emanuel pushes mandatory minimums for gun crimes, but research shows they are ineffective

The Mayor's proposed gun law may make us feel good, but that doesn’t mean it will work.

April 11, 2013
By: Rob Wildeboer

[...]...The situation in New York -- that’s one of the main “arguments” Emanuel and Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy have repeatedly made over the past few months as they’ve pushed their agenda on gun legislation..

“And just look at New York,” said McCarthy at a press conference this week. “It couldn’t be a clearer example of how to do this. The fact is, where these conditions exist, it’s working. I mean, what research do we need?”

Well, Frank Zimring did do the research. He’s a professor of law at the University of California Berkeley and author of the book “The City That Became Safe: New York’s Lessons for Urban Crime and its Control.”

“The mandatory minimum punishments, is, if you study the New York experience, beside the point,” said Zimring.

Zimring studied 19 years of data tracking crime in New York. He says in 1990 the city had 2,250 murders. In 2012, it had 419. That’s an astonishing 80 percent drop in murder.

It’s that success that’s being used to justify the mandatory minimum sentences being proposed by Emanuel and McCarthy, but mandatory minimums weren’t signed into law in New York until late 2006.

“That’s after 90 percent of the crime reduction!” said Zimring. “I think that what’s going on is that the superintendent and the mayor in Chicago are under a ‘do something fast political pressure,’ and in my experience, at least, that’s never been good for penal codes.

****

The Illinois Sentencing and Policy Advisory Council has studied Emanuel’s mandatory minimum and told legislators that if the law had been in effect over the last three years it would have cost the state an extra $400 million in incarceration expenses.

I was at the Compstat meeting and this was being discussed. The south side Deputy was up there giving his stats and was asked by the Supt if he wanted to change the way things were being done and he said no. That was in reference to the PPO's on the corners also. The Supt said that he didnt want the PPO's getting lazy and riding around in the back seat of cars either. He did show concern stating the PPO's should be rotated off their foot posts every six months so they dont get "burned out"..... If the Deputy Chief wont speak up, this bs will continue because all is well...

Ok, its really time for everyone under the rank of Supt. "leading" this Department to grow some balls and speak up.

...A fucking nightmare of thrown bottles, chunks of concrete, bricks, pieces of furniture, car parts, big cans of vegetables, bottles of piss and fresh shitty diapers snatched off the baby's ass...

not to mention the usual not so random incidents of shots fired...

All because The Police "done picked up Ol' Boy" for some dumb and dirty shit.

We remember one lively exchange after encountering some of one ol' boy's friends in a stairway... "Y'all ain't takin' him nowhere!"

It was heart-warming actually... They thought enough of his funky ass to form a possé to try and liberate him from the eeeevil clutches of the racist Po-leece.

Watch how this plays out... Our tingling Police-y senses tells us there is not a single innocent in this drama...

Be careful out there as always...

Then as now... When these people who are so famously lacking in impulse control, make moves/make noises to remove someone from Police custody, IT IS to be taken seriously.

Oh yeah... Nobody in the "community" is going to come forward with anything substantial to help the dicks...

"Most expressed disapproval of Sanders' death and said he was loved throughout the neighborhood."

So... a man in his prime who is known and loved in his neighborhood is shot dead in a petty dispute, and the neighbors react with strong emotions, call for immediate justice against the killer, say extreme and irrational things, and rubber-neck with their cell phones at the crime scene. The police have a difficult job getting the suspect away from the angry crowd.

Okay.

I would describe their behavior as emotional and extreme, but also very, very human. Not "sub-human", "animalistic", "third world", "savage", etc. Yes, it is uncivilized behavior; if you look closely, you might notice that this isn't really a very civil country anymore, if it ever was. I think that the real sub-humans are some of the commenters on this blog.

But I agree that Dr. King is spinning in his grave -- because another black man is killed for nothing, another black neighborhood is scarred by violence, the police and the city are burdened with the consequences, and a group of observers sneers, "See? I told you so."

That fine citizen is onto something when she says that the shooter should " make his point" and shoot the victim in the arm or leg but not kill him. This original idea should be brought up at a ComStat Meeting. Homicides would definitely go down.

Self created! These two are so worried about their egos that they want to do a news conference and tell us how they are going to fix this, and that, and this. That is why we have so many 'initiatives'. Not one officer on this department can tell you what all those initiatives are, so they just become new stories to get them through the issue.

I was one of the p.o.'s on scene who was blamed for this shooting. Some p.o.'s were also called racist. Funny... My famiy nor my personal friends were not involved in this incident. Looking around the scene I only saw one race involved in this chaos. Guess common sense isn't common anymore. As a matter of fact, officers as same race as the victim and the offenders were the last ones on scene. I am a freak. I grew up in a area where people didn't sell drugs, rob, rape and murder eachother and surround our lives with lies and deception. I am not racist but do not avoid facts either.

4/14/2013 02:04:00 PM

Well I did grow up in an area where people sold drugs, robbed, raped, and murdered. Where you're unrealistic is when you believe that where you lived there weren't people that surrounded themselves with lies and deception. I saw that in the hood and out the hood. OT

Two videos that you should google:

1. Ted Nugent v Erin Burnett RE Gun Control
2. Bill Oreilly v Lou Dobbs RE Gun Control & CHI Crime

One the 2nd one, basically Bill thinks that having us randomly approach these fine "citizens" and perform the "Stop & Frisk" action in an attempt to locate an unregistered firearm. While I agree with Bill regarding mandatory FEDERAL sentences for these repeat offenders, I did take issue with the means to his ends.

I sent this to him via email:

The issue that most people are not seeing is the political system that controls everything here in Chicago. I have been sued multiple times in federal court for doing nothing mandated outside my general orders, rules and regulations, moral compass or even the liberal societal norms that permeate this city. I have had to submit my financial history so that useful idiots and their attorneys can see how much of my money and property they can take because of a corrupt legal system.
That being said, most policeman here in Chicago are scared to death to "STOP & FRISK" people at a whim because it opens themselves up to possible huge penalties and life changing consequences with possible jail time.
I offer this example. We had a policeman slap, just slap (which we can call a neurological stun as delineated within our rules and is permitted) because the hand-cuffed offender was still resisting and attempted to spit (classified as a Battery to PO) on the officer. The slap was caught on cell phone camera, of course, the preceding arrest and fight were not, but that officer was charged criminally, convicted in a court by a jury of "peers" and now loses any resemblance of a life. On the other hand, a cook county judge slaps a sheriff deputy at the court building and then claims mental defect and her case gets thrown out (nolle prosse), meaning the state's attorney drops the case and she is allowed to remain on the bench serving with her livelihood intact.
Sir, I could cite many examples of the rampant political degradation of our city, but Im sure you have stopped reading by now, but as far as relying on the police to physically search people proactively and then giving out mandatory ten year sentences for those people caught with unregistered firearms, that time has come and gone. No policeman is going to be on the forefront of wanting that because their "leaders" do not support them nor will they protect them. Prosecutors will not support the charges we bring against these individuals and we, as police are left holding the bag.
As another example, look at the recent Logan Square robbery where two Male Black offenders in their 50's!!! robbed a store where the store owner and a customer fought back with a bat and a steel pole. Watch that video closely and you will see the wanton disregard for life by those two savages. Luckily, the one with the gun was not concerned with muzzle control or accuracy or those two people would be dead. That store owner and/or the patron should have been allowed to carry a firearm to protect themselves. They showed a will to survive and they are better for it. In this instance, as as you stated in your debate for "draconian" punishment, those two offenders should have been killed by those upright citizens never again to harm a living soul.
Ted, If you would like to communicate with me regarding this or any related issue. I can be reached anytime through email or on my cell. If you would like further insight into the mindset and feelings of the typical Chicago area policeman, i suggest perusing the blog SecondCityCop.Blogspot.com. It is not my blog, but the thoughts, values, fears and attitude is shared by many of us that try everyday to protect the citizens of this once great city.

You have a police state in Chicago.

Good people stripped of guns to protect themselves by the 'law'.

Murderers and robbers run free.

The local 'government' has their own bodyguards.

And beat cops in short supply.

So what do you expect?

This is like the show, "Vigilante" with Charles Bronson.

People fed up with lack of justice.
Fed up with a government that is so corrupt and lazy. Fed up with crime that, given the type of government there, just cannot control.

But who is to blame?

Every citizen in Chicago. They are to blame cause they elected that very government that promised safety if they gave up their freedom. For you see those that trade their freedom for safety will get neither.

4/14/2013 02:52:00 PM

Funny thing, I didn't see this type of "very, very human" behavior from the community in Aurora, Colorado when the theater shooter was apprehended by the police.

the differences:

1. quantity, as in percentage of population.

2. quality, as in an innate sense of the need for regular, substantial and reliable anonymity.

3. honesty, in that there is a fucking universe's worth of difference between 'an area where people sold drugs, robbed, raped, and murdered.' and an area where there was a much smaller percentage of 'people that surrounded themselves with lies and deception.'.

of course, perhaps your personal sense of values are quite different than the values of the poster whose comment ticked you off.

He keep all the problem people in housing projects, keeping them from spreading out to other parts of the city and suburbs.
