Word from a little bird says certain persons were called down to City Hall last month and asked as the feasibility of running 2,000 (that's two-thousand) recruits through the Academy prior to the end of the year.
While Ladner's name wasn't brought up as screwing up the hiring processes, our readers did notice this posted on the City website:

- The City of Chicago, Department of Human Resources (DHR), will be administering a make-up exam for the 2010 Chicago Police Officer examination. The make-up examinations are offered to military personnel who were on active duty during the original application period (10/28/10 – 11/26/10) or examination (12/11/10) as well as candidates who applied during the original application period (10/28/10 -11/26/10) but could not attend the original examination due to (1) religious restrictions; or (2) medical/personal emergency
Nothing about the dozens or hundreds denied hiring due to Ladner's capricious and arbitrary rulings that seem to have no basis in anything but family connections to the Department. There also appears to be an exam scheduled for September - we assume it's a new one.

Please explain why we even need to give an entry level exam. All applicants have to have 60 credit hours. So we can assume they can read and write. Maybe!

There are places where you can take these vests and donate them to the military. They use them to line the inside of their vehicles used in Afghanistan, etc.

so they hire 2000 new cops.

in any case, 2000 new cops would mean a budget increase of something like $150 million just for salaries and benefits. Where the heck is that coming from?

Laugh now, pay later. Make sure you take appropriate actions to ensure you won't get socked with a higher tax bill next year. Put it into a Roth IRA or into deferred comp, the more the better.

The problems with hiring a boatload of officers in a single year is that come retirement, they all go at once in a short time period.
In Area North, a majority of us are from the class of '86. 1500 hired that year, 200 per month from the latest test that started in June. Huge exodus going on right now.
The good thing is if you're lucky enough to be in one of the first classes you're golden.
The difference in what furlo you get in Area North whether you came on in June or Dec. 86 is remarkable.

It has always been a clusterfuck. The city has never done things right and smooth, not hireing, not promotions, not transfers. None, ever. Nothing new here.
Fastest way to hire 1200 officers is to allow lateral transfers from other departments. Since they are state certified they don't need to go through our 6 month academy. They can probably go through a 4-6 week academy to learn our rules,regulations and procedure. That covers the department legally--- because we know that's all they care about!

If I recall correctly, there was a charity of some sort that took used and expired vests and gave them to the Military. The expired ones were used as sheilding on Humvees, meaning, they stuffed them into the door panels, fenders, etc. to ward off against IED's. The non-expired ones were given to men to wear.
You are right, throwing them out or selling them to some guy on Craigslist is not optimal.
Also: PD's use them for training and ballistic testing as well. Talk to Mitch over at Shore's. He might have some insight to this.

But then come VRI; 1.3 million spent every 2 weeks on extra manpower. Now our tact Lt grabs our ear and says McCarthy wants to cancel our days off on the weekends to be forced to go downtown in uniform, yep crown cap and stand on corner to deter the black ghetto flash mobs. So limited time off already because of manpower shortage "that doesnt exist" and now they are canceling our days off on the weekends. Family first my ass! I'm in court, then work and side jobs and little time to spend with my wife and kids and now that the kids are all in sports, McCarthy wont let me see them on the weekends. You want moral to drop even lower, done! Then guys are rumoring that they wont let you take money and have to check the cu box. But I cant use cu because of the manpower shortage that doesnt exist so now what?
BTW: Your question is not the slightest bit stupid. The Department really does not give good advice on what to do with such stuff.

Something else they screwed up.
They did away with in house screening for the recruits and hired an outside (clout heavy ) company who charges a lot more.
It was suggested they use retired POs instead, which would cost about 75% less.
I guess they killed that suggestion

Off duty in 008, 87 and Knox area was walking from his garage to his home in his gangway around 5pm when an silver Suzuki SUV rolls up and two young white gangbangers pop off about 7 rounds at him. Off duty managed to take cover and was unable to return fire. No plate info. There were no words exchanged. Be careful and always be aware of your surroundings

Donate your vests. Look up Vest for Life, they send out used and expired vests to police departments that can't afford them...they will even pay shipping.

So, if they change the age from 25 downward, was the age requirement of 25 in place at the last test? If it was, then a new test will have to lower the age. Any test that is allied to the test of age 25 must remain the same or there is an age discrimination lawsuit waiting.

Easy solution to your problems. Put a to-from in and go back to the watch. Tact is not worth all the head aches. Historically the department has always used tact teams for bs details. Do not let them take advantage of you like that just so you can run around in CD and sometimes get an early duck. The city does not care about you or your family. Trust me spending time with the family you can never get back. You will be much happier with out the stress of having days off cancelled. The watch is not as bad as you think. Remember family first.

Thanks for the advice, maxed out deferred comp earlier in the year, and I checked with my accountant the next tax bracket is changed if you make over 250k.

Will never happen. CPD does not and will not take lateral transfers. You never know who or what you would be getting from a different department. All have different requirements and hiring policies
The problems with hiring a boatload of officers in a single year is that come retirement, they all go at once in a short time period.
Not true When I came on there was alot of hiring that year, but some of the guys retired at 50, others at 63, thats a 13 year run, so if 1000 were hired divide that by the 13 years and its no big deal

Fastest way to hire 1200 officers is to allow lateral transfers from other departments. Since they are state certified they don't need to go through our 6 month academy. They can probably go through a 4-6 week academy to learn our rules,regulations and procedure. That covers the department legally--- because we know that's all they care about!

Definitely false. I know a church leader who has maybe more passion for Jesus Christ than any man I've ever met. He's over 6 foot 200lbs like a big teddy bear, known for giving guys big bear hugs and always checking on you. He's a former drug dealing drive by shooting 4CH.
